Improvised Scenes In Black Widow

Marvel’s Black Widow had the best of the best - an incredible cast, strong writing, a director with a vision and perhaps surprisingly, some of the best improv around! The lead actors, Scarlet Johansson, Florence Pugh and David Harbour worked together to bring an incredible dynamic on screen. According to Johansson, Florence Pugh crushed the ego of herself and other Marvel actors with one improvised line that made fun of pretty well every unrealistic superhero landing pose that had gone before - and there are a LOT. Thanks to a very informative and somewhat surprising conversation with the stunt team, Pugh found herself joking around and when writer Eric Pearson caught wind of the idea, he knew it was worth including in the film! There was no shortage of female empowerment in this MCU movie - one misogynistic line noted by Johansson, Pugh and director Cate Shortland wound up getting an improvised comeback. Yelena and Natasha wind up addressing the dark fact that they, along with all the other Widow’s are sterilized and don’t steer away from giving Red Guardian ALL the details. Santa Claus coming up during the dinner scene is a bit surprising - which makes sense considering it was never in the script! David Harbour whipped out improvisations throughout filming. In fact, the majority of the helicopter scene banter between himself, Pugh and Johansson was just the actors playing off of each other. Harbour wound up being responsible for one of the most profound moments we see with the Red Guardian - one that involves a classic song. We’re diving into all these great improvised moments - let us know which one is your favorite!

  • The bit where Alexei sings American Pie for Yelena after their botched conversation. It shows more than anything that he really did love them like his own. You don't remember every single word of your daughter's favorite song after 21 years apart, if you don't really love her. That kind of thing means he thought about them every single day since they were taken, and he regretted letting them go.

  • As a man, I found the entire going into the rant after the "time of the month" jab absolutely hilarious. It's always those dudes who use it as a dismissive argument that get uncomfortable and react the same way he did when Yelena started going into detail on the sterilization. I also loved the entire poser thing, because it added a sense of realism to the fantasy that we could all enjoy the absurdity of, and the way Scarlet tried to defend it was great. The movie was great overall, but Florence's portrayal of the bratty sass machine little sister was probably the best portrayal of that kind of trope I have ever seen.

    • The propensity of the Marvel Universe to encourage their actors to improvise is precisely one of the main reasons I have lost interest in the franchise. It’s not done properly and is painfully clear every time there is an improvise because they are seemingly always completely out of character and jarring. Completely destroys the forth wall for me. The opening scene in Thor Ragnorrok was extremely cringe worthy because it was like trying to watch Helmsworth being funny on SNL, not like Thor trying to taunt an adversary. I do realize this particular scene was loved by many fans, which tells me that the films aren’t for me. But, in my opinion our standards seem to be dropping and we should expect more from film or it will all be trash very soon.

So disney releasing it onto disney+ severely affected her salary and was a direct violation of their initially agreed contract. So she’s suing them (rightfully so, don’t go back on your word). She probably won’t return to the role again (not like she really would need to lol) due to just awkwardness and distrust formed between her and the company. • Florence Pugh's scene where she does the "pose" and then calls her a "poser" is my favorite scene and the way Florence delivers it is priceless!! It gave the movie that extra umph it needed.
