Monsoon taught me how to parry, Armstrong taught me how to dodge, Sundowner taught me to take my time with blade mode, and Sam taught me to respect my opponent.
Mistral taught me how to fucking hate boss fights with mini foes
Sam's stage 2 (bladeless) forced me to learn proper use of offensive defense/dodge slash.
Bladewolf taught me how to parry. Monsoon taught me that I am terrible at parrying. Sundowner taught me that I can move the blade mode camera with WASD (because up until that point I was fucking stupid and just slashed with mouse). Mistral was just fucking annoying.
Mistral taught me to take down small fry opponents first. Monsoon improved my parry timing. Sundowner taught me to analyze, mark and slice the blade mode spots carefully. Sam taught me the proper combat tactic. Armstrong taught me dodge timings.

Not everyone stands in front of their opponent and headbuts them repeatedly to win lmfao. Seperating and throwing tanks is his powerset. If he was a teleporter would you say he's "running" during every fight he ever wins and look down on it as lesser? No lol. Would you say "the only reason he beat that guy was because he was running. If that teleporter stood in front of the much stronger guy and didn't use his ability he would have lost." Lmfao. I dont think you would say that. Because at that point it would become obvious to you how stupid that sounds lmfao. teleporter wins by blitzing around and never taking damage, usually they deal small damage but have nigh invincibility because obviously between two people with relative power. The ability to think and teleport away happens much faster than an opponent can move their body and close distance and actually physically strike you. Both parties have to think to act. But the teleporter is already done with their action by the time they think. the opponent has just started and now has to actually move. Its the same with Monsoon. He can seperate faster than jack can strike because it happens when he thinks it should happen. While jack has to think and then move. Dont give me muscle memory, Monsoon is working on muscle memory the same way. And they are both powered by electricity so theyre both lightspeed reactions anyway

Imagine appearing in the game for literally 30 minutes, dropping the best song in the entire game, then dying. What a badass.
Not only that, he completely stole the show in a way that is feasibly impossible such that he's remained a cultural icon to this day. By all accounts, he should've been less popular than Mistral. Edit: People seem to be misunderstanding what I'm saying so I'll elaborate here: Monsoon came out of *fμcking **_nowhere;_* unlike Mistral, who was established at the start of her level, was featured in a couple mid-level Codec calls, had a good look about 2/3s of the way in and concluded at the top of the refinery, Monsoon had *_none_* of that and just appeared at the end of Denver. There was nothing to support him, no foreshadowing, no build up, no mystery and no anticipation; by all accounts, from the way the level was going you'd have thought the boss would be Sam but _nooOoOoOoOoooO_ this mfer decided to rain in on his parade and steal the spotlight like it was his show and by God did he steal it. That's what's feasibly impossible.

He’s pretty much the perfect counter to ripper mode, even more so than Armstrong. Nanomachines (son) are great but the don’t block ALL the damage. Monsoons body was impossible to slice into pieces since it’s already in pieces

Fun fact: Monsoon in-game is absurdly tanky to compensate for Raiden having constant Ripper mode in his fight. If you mod him into another arena or during Sam or Bladewolf's campaigns you can really see just how bulky he is

Monsoon legit was posing up like a Jojo character and launching an entire half of the USA military budget at you at Mach 3. All while shredding the absolute SHIT out of a guitar. So hard to not count this as one of my favorite themes in the game.

I beat the entire game without knowing how parrying worked. i found out it works by spamming move controls and light attack on Sam

You know I realise Moonsoon was the ONLY desperado to fight Raiden in a permanent Ripper Mode (Aka at Full Power) and his fight is arguably the hardest of them all.... HUH thinking this way Monsoon is quite a badass.

@@thekiaracooper His ability to dismember his body is what made him last as long as he did... But you can disable that temporarily with an emp grenade followed by a cutting mode slash to the head. The fight goes easier then. And to be honest, nah, he wasn't the toughest. Sam was... Least in my opinion. And he's the only other person in Metal Gear Rising to injure Armstrong. Sundowner was a pain until I realized offensive defense lets you slash at him even WITH his explosive shield up. Monsoon, just stay out of the smoke grenades (note that when you move through it, he'll come at you faster to try to keep you in it, but once you're out of it, he'll resume his typical attack pattern.)
@Beau James I would still say Ripper Mode + Murasama is a lot more dangerous and powerful than Raiden's Normal Blade + Ripper Mode though, as his normal blade didn't even do anything to as much as slow down armstrong.

and then when you activate ripper mode against his body double you realise the devs forgot to adjust for it and you kick his ass in 2 seconds

Love how Moonson and Mistral have just randomly appeared, died, and that's literally all. Every other character has appeared in the story before, but these two just do that. Not only that, but Moonson is probably the only character who you fight right after meeting him. Mistral had at least a brief cutscene and a small level before her, but Moonson? Nope. He fight you right after the cutscene where he first appears and drops this banger on you. What a guy.

I wouldn't exactly call Raiden evil, though. He's well intentioned, and even though he has to cleave through legions of people forced to fight against their will, it's with the goal of ending that entirely. Pretty much, the ends justify the means.

I think what works about it is that Raiden was basically a somewhat blank-ish slate in his premier game MGS2. He has a character technically with his Jack The Ripper past as a Les Enfants Terribles experiment subject, but for the most part he represents most kids playing MGS2 and who grew up with video games and are bred for war. Well, most people wanted Snake and shit all over Raiden and didn't get the character at the time. So I feel like MGS4 Kojima sort of made him into what he is by going the complete opposite way with the character from what people expected from him. I don't know if he even thought people would like Cyborg Raiden, he may just want to have rubbed it in their collective faces and make him as cynical and edgy as the players were and thus creating a sort of ugly image of the players for them to see. Now what makes MGRR really pay off is that instead of like the end of MGS2 where Raiden is learning how to let go of your violent past we're instead seeing he completely falls back into his Jack The Ripper alter-ego that is either an actual alternate personality or some semi conscious coping mechanism and mask for him to use. In either case, the way the character has gone through all these changes and as wacky as it is still comes off as believable makes it feel like a really big payoff compared to some Sonic OC or like Shadow the Hedgehog or something who never really went through a transition to become this sort of tragic edgy murdering machine.

ive read somewhere it was about the clouds trying to wash away his anger, at no response it gets stronger but to no avail, since it is completely empty inside.
I think it’s Raider trying to hide since he was born from lightning, the rain transformed. Raiden was born a soldier, worked as one,then became perfection when cybernetic enhancements were realized. He was born a soldier and will die as one while his dreams fade away from conflict. Monsoon probably came to grips with this, but it’s a huge coming out party for Raiden and the excuses he used to justify his war.
Monsoon is a nihilist, pure and simple; he doesn't believe in anything because he believes that nobody does, that everyone is controlled by memes.
All the songs are pretty dark. Whether they're about death, rot, violence, loss, the erasure of self... there's a lot to choose from!

I think I understand what's wrong with Monsoon, he has all the pieces but not the will to put them together. He understands why people act, but he gave up trying to find answers there. He chose to believe, out of sheer instinct, that the morbid truth he found was the whole of it. Even with all his conditioning that caused his actions, and almost made him a great person, he resorted to instinct. How fitting that the man who chose to give up meaning for his anger and pain, would return to primal urge, begging for his life in his final hour. Without even having time to realize it, he gained an appreciation for life. But exactly like his disdain for that very same world, it was meaningless. Devoid of the purpose that makes things matter. He lived like an animal, and after decades of pain, he died like one.
Damn. So he thought reverting to monke was the way to go, but in the end Raiden reverting to monke was what caused his death.

My favorite part about the Monsoon battle is that if you beat him badly enough, he'll actually ask for mercy right before he dies. Jack the Ripper is so terrifying that he makes a hardcore nihilist normally unconcerned with his death *beg for his life*.

I initially doubted that this was true, because I remember doing poorly in the Monsoon fight but still seeing something like that. It made an impression on me because it was so unexpected, so I was pretty sure I wasn't just remembering wrong. I went looking for answers: according to the wiki, before death, he will say this line ("No! Stop it!") if you get a high combat rank for the fight _or_ if you don't use EM grenades on him. The funny thing about it is, I distinctly remember _having the idea_ of using EM grenades, and taking out an EM grenade and trying to aim it at him, but I ultimately decided not to use them because he moved pretty quickly and I didn't think I'd be able to hit him with one. I got that dialogue by being too bad at the game to do the fight the easy way.
Statistically speaking there's at least one person who heard monsoon first from this game and that weirds me the fuck out
