Cuba faces worst economic crisis in decades

Cuba is facing its worst economic crisis in 30 years.
The last time Cuba felt this strain was when subsidies from the former Soviet Union ended.
Now, US sanctions and a pandemic that has crippled the tourism industry have tens of thousands of Cubans leaving the island in search of a better life.

  • This is a tropical country - with a lot of vegetation and lots and lots of land...., there should be mechanisms in place for people to use that land to grow their own food. There should be no reason why people should be starving there.

    • Cuba does grow a lot of food, in fact too much that they throw many into the garbage! For instance, Cuba has perfect environment for growing mangoes, those mangoes are the best tasting and biggest I've ever seen in all the countries I have been in the world!Mangoes are so cheap in Cuba they sell for 3 big ones for only 1 CUC or about US$1. But because Cuba has so many mangoes that don't get eaten before they spoil they are thrown into garbage! Dried mango meats can fetch about US$10 per kg on the international market, but Cuba rather throws excessive mangoes in the garbage than make dried mangoes for sale. Cheese is another common Cuba product, high quality and cheap, most likely made from organic milk, price is very cheap, less than US$5 per kg. Bananas are about US$0.25 per kg, yes, just 25 US cents per kg, but there's no banana chips made in Cuba, any banana not eaten are thrown into garbage! One of Cuba's problems is distribution, the system is inefficient and careless, often foods on the farms are spoiled before transportations arrive to pick them up. Cuba is a good country with an excellent government for a poor county, it may very well be the best running poor country in the whole world. People in Cuba get free housing, food, education, medical services, this is why Cuba has low crime rate, its people have less stress and social problems, unlike the nearby Haiti or Jamaica. Cuba is a paradise for poor people, despite how the mainstream media portray it as a desperate broken country in poverty, in reality Cuba is not anything like how the mainstream media paints it as.

    • I was thinking the same thing. I still understand why America has sanctions on Cuba after all these years But, trades with Russia and China. Also manufacturer US goods there

      @robertsmith1865@robertsmith1865 Жыл бұрын
    • @@robertsmith1865 because China is crucial to fueling American consumerism. America tried "replicating" China in India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Kenya- it didn't work. Even now US sanctions Russia oil but Russia sells crude to India who processes it and sells it to USA as Indian fuel. Cuba doesn't have the might to pull off such stunts so US can bravely sanction.

    • @@knightimer2 Well 4% of Cuba's population flew to Nicaragua and walked over 2500 km to get to the US in the just the last 2 years. Pretty sure most Cubans would be ecstatic to have an economy like the US. There's also the fact that the last time Cuba's economy crashed in the 1990s, Castro's government made capitalist reforms, becoming more like the US economy to save his regime. But you and the adorable little marxist shouldn't have to worry, I'm sure the Cuban government will find a way to chug along and continue making sure that taxi drivers and doorman for foreigners make more than Cuban doctors. After all we all know the whole point of the Cuban revolution was to make Cubans 2nd class citizens, desperate to serve wealthy foreigners in order to make enough money to eat 😂

  • Cuba is suffering from lack of imagination. And it isn't only Cuba, but since Cuba is the subject at the moment...The Cuban people need fresh new young ideas at levels of leadership. Just as we see here in America, older leaders with their biases and their self interests see the future much differently than the younger people who will have to live in it longer. And though it is true that that youthful naivete at the leadership level could cause issues. Especially with other leaders looking to take advantage of younger leadership. It also presents it's advantages, like not holding on to old prejudices and grievances. Which allows one to be open to possibilities. Communism in the government of Cuba here in the 2020's is more religious or ritualistic than it is anything else. Cuba needs to let it go. Not to appease The United States, but to free HER people from worn out dogma.

There are even people who starve who are overweight-looking - because that weight was reached when they had access to food, and it stays on the appearance even when food is not coming.
