CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Moses (Charlton Heston) parts the Red Sea for the Hebrews to escape the Egyptians' pursuit.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Holy Scriptures, with additional dialogue by several other hands, The Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a whiz at designing pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. As the Hebrews reach the Red Sea, they discover that Rameses has gone back on his word and plans to have them all killed. But Moses rescues his people with a little Divine legerdemain by parting the Seas. Later, Moses is again confronted by God on Mt. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting their religion and behaving like libertines. "Where's your Moses now?" brays Dathan in the manner of a Lower East Side gangster. He soon finds out. DeMille's The Ten Commandments may not be the most subtle and sophisticated entertainment ever concocted, but it tells its story with a clarity and vitality that few Biblical scholars have ever been able to duplicate. It is very likely the most eventful 219 minutes ever recorded to film--and who's to say that Nefertiri (Anne Baxter) didn't make speeches like, "Oh, Moses, Moses, you splendid, stubborn, adorable fool"?

    • @@TL.... All people are accountable to God whether or not they have “heard about Him.” The Bible tells us that God has clearly revealed Himself in nature (Romans 1:20) and in the hearts of people (Ecclesiastes 3:11). In reality, it is not that some people have not heard about God. Rather, the problem is that they have rejected what they have heard and what is readily seen in nature. Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” This verse teaches an important principle-everyone who truly seeks after God will find Him. If a person truly desires to know God, God will make Himself known. God is a good and just God, and as Abraham said, Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” Genesis 18:25 God will not send a innocent native American to hell.

The dynamics between Nefetiri,Moses and Ramses gave this story extra layers. This scene however was Hestons stamp on this movie. However more importantly, This demonstrates the AWESOMENESS OF YAHWEH On ALL levels. YAHWEH IS THE LORD OF HOSTS AND YESHUA(JESUS) IS THE TRUE KING AND SAVIOR OF MANKIND.

"Let's have a debate on if freedom of speech and religion are good for society." "Could it be that women need fewer rights?" This made the water appear to divide. The illusion of keeping the walls of water separated was accomplished by filming Jello being sliced close-up. Then double-exposing everything with live-action footage of the Israelites walking into the distance with the Egyptian chariots in pursuit.

And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain

  • My mom took me to see this movie in 1956 when it was first released and we went again when they released it a second time. That parting of the Red Sea still gives me chills and has never been done better. In fact, this entire movie stands alone as the greatest version. If it is ever released again, do yourselves a favor and go see it. It is an awesome production.

    • ohsnapiam59 It can only be appreciated by seeing it on the BIG screen...not an HDTV but the real BIG screen!

    • QuantumRift The real BIG screen, shown on real film projectors and NOT digital projection!!! Digital conversion, and even video conversion, does something to the imagery that wrecks some of the matte shots.

  • Incredible, that these special effects hold up better than some of those that have been put out 17 years after the new millennium. I was genuinely captivated, especially when the waters part, because you have to wonder whether that's actually what a parting sea would look like.
