CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In his time of need, Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), calls out to God to help him and his prayer is answered when a mysterious man offers him water to drink.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik.

The Centurion's reaction i spot on. He is not shocked or scared or threatened, he has a look of pure realization on his face, like something has been made clear to him, like he just woke up and can't fathom that he had been dreaming all along. He also has a look of questioning, as if he is asking himself "What the hell am I doing?" It's as if he is more than just looking into Jesus, he is also looking into a mirror and seeing himself and the world very clearly for the first time.
Oj tak, swietnie to ujals 🤔
It is FICTION
True he looks like he is questioning everything at that moment that actor did a fantastic job
Exactly. That is how we are all going to feel and experience when we see the Lord God Jesus face to face..............
I’ve never seen “awe” portrayed as well before or since. He was struck.
The man who played Jesus was an opera singer, Claude Heater, and very formidable. He was 6'4". This was his only film he ever did. He died in 2020 at the age of 93.
Thx!
Only 6'4? He looks like he is 7 foot.
When he has risen?
What a blessing to play that part.....virtually unknown and thanks for informing us of his identity. Must have been very humbling to get into that character.....we as humans are all so unworthy, we'd need God's help to assume that role.
God bless his memory
No one talks about how much water was in that tiny little cup! He was chugging that water for a minute while Jesus stood there looking at the Roman. Not just compassion, but a miracle as well. I always loved that about this scene.
Yes, I've always felt that the Miracle of the Weddiing Feast was more about the water than the wine. Jesus said to fill the jugs w/ water and then it was said that the best "wine" was saved for last. Could be that the crowd had enough of the fruit of the vine, and were so thirsty and out of it (drunk) that the water actually was what satisfied them; ergo: saved the best for the last.
This one scene is so moving and conveys love is the answer. I am coverted to Christianity!!! It better than going to Church!!!
@@kaiYWang God bless you for becoming a believer and accepting the free gift of life because of the finished work of Christ's atonement ! Yes...this will change your life, and it has already. I've always wondered how these great actors in the film were able to convey the message. It must have been a gift from above and an honor to play those parts so well.
I believe that God in His Providence was able to use the men and women in this film, most of whom are unbelievers to convey a sense of the majesty of Jesus. It catches my breath away and elicits tears of astonishment. This scene is the most powerful I have ever witnessed in any setting, even church itself. We need to get back to this and we will when Jesus returns.
@@excellent952 Goes to show you that God can use anything for His purposes, whether the person is a believer or not. Could be that some connected w/ the film were believers, and some weren't, at the time of the filming. But that could have changed over time, as God worked in people's hearts. We trust God by faith to work as He pleases in situations like these.
What an absolute classic of a film ! People really put their souls in making movies back then.

I love that despite the small container, it never seems to run out of water reflecting Christ's trait of being a never ending flow of water where none will ever be thirsty with Him. Great writing
Yes! Such a subtle message demonstrating Jesus as being and giving Living water!❤️
Excellent catch! God Bless you!
correct.... a fountain of living water.
And later, when Judah tried to re-pay the act on the Via Dolorosa, he was only able to provide Jesus barely a sip. Profound. He gives us so much and we give Him so little.
It's endless love of God
I am a 63 year old man who still cries whenever I look upon this scene.
I’m 63 too still crying every time I see a scene.
They don't make movies like this anymore. Truly an epic movie in every sense of the world. This scene...the omission of the face of Jesus, the absence of words between Jesus and Judah, the acting of the Roman guard the moment Jesus looks at him with mere facial expressions. The filmmakers of Ben Hur realized that less is more. Incredible scene.
The cinematography was also pretty ground breaking, Quo Vadis was shot with a lot of bright lights, also the costumes are brighter and sunny, here the costumes are dirtier and more lived in, the use of shadow and light in some scenes too are very well done. Also the character of Esther is brilliant.
In the actors' comments on the DVD version of Dr. Zhivago, Omar Sharif mentions a similar thing as Zhivago and his family watched the brutal slaying of the dragoons on the Christmas party night massacre of the demonstrators.....it's just a closeup of Zhivago's face in shock as he witnesses the chaos going on below, and then there is no actual excess carnage we see in today's videos, we just see a drum rolling away from the victims, a kid running, and audio of the chaos; and a few shots of blood on the ground; then the stark scene of a body being tossed in a cart and taken away. Less graphic depiction is actually more effective to convey the point of all the violence.
That was legendary! The best on screen version of Jesus and he didn't say a word nor did we have to see his face. He was just standing there in all his glory. Powerful stuff.
Yes awesome. And what of the centurion's face? "God help me"....and He did!
The Passion of the Christ is still the best... even though he needed to be blonder with sapphire eyes
Amen!

LameDoodler Yes , it was confirmed as a fake, and then the confirmation was debunked because they took a piece from where it was burned by fire and resowed with pieces of cloth from the Medieval times , so it still stands as the real deal today.
I love it when Ben touches his hand afterwards so gently. He doesn't know why, but he knows that he has to. The soldier looks at Jesus and is humbled, embarrassed and ashamed. No words needed, Jesus has disarmed him.
I wonder if this is the same centurion who later realized Jesus's divinity at the Crucifixion.
@@MaskedMan66 I meant the soldier who says " you I said no water for him "
@@acasacas9844 Yes, I know; my question is still the same. 🙂
@@MaskedMan66 It could've been. Some think the Centurion at the Crucifixion was the one whose sick servant Jesus healed during his ministry. That's how it was portrayed in Jesus of Nazareth, the Centurion portrayed by Ernest Borgnine. :)
@@KeiFox Yup!
I think this is the best scene ever about Jesus. Ben Hur has nothing left and all he can do is cry out for help as he did "God help me" and God did. Without a word, we see the love, the compassion, the caring, the providing, and the protecting. I love the symbolism of the water. Notice how Ben Hur drank way more than that ladle could hold. As God so often does, He not only generously gives us what we need but often so much more. This scene touches me every time and it is a constant reminder that all we ever have to do with a sincere heart is cry out "God help me" and He will...Amen! Praise be unto the Father and His son the Lord Jesus Christ!
Centuarian knows, Jesus just looked at him, says nothing but portrays " Really, your not going to give him a drink, look at yourself fella ". Centuarian left looking like scolded naughty Child, afraid of the teacher telling him off. Actually a great bit of acting by the Centurion
True but the most powerful thing is that Ben Hur realized that he was looking into the face of GOD!!!!
Amen and Amen 🙏. Praise God 🙏.!!!
It's a brilliant movie, but it doesn't offer a quick and easy way for Ben Hur to follow Christ's reaching. Time and again in the movie Ben Hur chooses the path of revenge and destruction, he is torn up with hatred and misses a chance to hear Jesus preach. It's only really in the final 20 minutes of the movie that he becomes really drawn towards Jesus.
in the book Ben Hur was just about to die.with his last breatd he said.God Help me.
To this day, this is one of the only scenes in any movie to make me bawl my eyes out. And I’m not ashamed to say that.
correct. The most powerful scene in the history of cinema and this is going to be each person's reality when we see Him face to face in the end..... the ones who have accepted Him and the ones who have rejected Him.
me too the roman is humbled before the face of christ
You are not the only one...
The centurions response to seeing Jesus brings me to tears as much as Jesus giving Judah the drink of water. It is such beautiful scene.
And notice how gentle Christ was, He poured the water gently, He didn't just splash it down. Notice how Christ washed Ben Hur's face so gently..... That's how our Precious LORD is with ALL of HIS children, He is always GENTLE AND LOVING, I LOVE YOU JESUS ❤❤❤.
the actor who played Jesus was Claude Heather, he doesn't say a word in the film, he remained unknown for several years, only his hands, his body, the soundtrack and the look of Charlton act! And I think it was one of the greatest representations of Jesus ever made!
He died this this year unfortunately.

The scene was perfect. If you understand the training of the ancient roman army; the scene becomes more impressive. Ancient Roman soldiers were trained to be without empathy or compassion. Soldiers of the ancient world prided themselves on their cruelty, their indefference to the suffering of their fellow human being. They believed their indefference made them superior to the compassionate weak. When the centurion looked into the eyes of Jesus, he saw something he could not comprehend. He saw compassion; he saw empathy and love, but he also saw strength. A strength that was greater than the empire he served.

When I was 9, my grandmother took me to see Ben Hur in Salt Lake City on the way back home from a vacation in Idaho. It was there I met Jesus, whose face was never seen in the movie. One of the most intimate, mysterious, tender things Jesus has done for me was to remind me, "I remember you in the theater, Jolayne, how your heart soared in that scene and you recognized me, how you wanted to know me." Several times, in seasons of joy as well as in the darkest valley, He's reminded me. So, while scrolling through KZhead the other day, fighting despair from a severe bipolar depression, I saw the headline, "When Ben Hur met Jesus," and I stopped short. How many times have I used those very words, that "I met Jesus in Ben Hur" when asked how I came to Christ. How I wasn't born again nor had I read the Bible until 1994, but I met Jesus in that theater in 1959 and something happened to me. I know every note of music, every detail of that scene, and God sent that very clip to me a few days ago. And today again, when I needed it. Only that scene, nothing else. That He would do that? No words. ☝️❤️❤️❤️

@Magno Avatar You do realize that Judah Ben-Hur was not a real person, right? It was based on a novel by the same name. Written sometime in the latter half of the 1800's. It was/is considered one of the most influential Christian Novels ever written.
Magno Avatar shut up you annoying dummy
Heston tells the story that on location for this scene, director Wyler discovered to his shock that a different actor was on set to play the role of the centurion. Wyler turned to his assistant director and said "This is not the man I chose". The assistant said "Yes, I know but he was asking for too much money. and this was your second choice and you had said he was good." Wyler said "Go and get the man I had chosen for this role." The assistant pointed out that they were quite a distance from Rome on location near Anzio beach and that it would take many hours to find him and transport him to the location. Wyler replied, "We can wait." A great example of why Wyler was one of the greatest directors of his or any time. The man was pure class. A great story.
I remember when they reintroduced this back into the theaters in 1971. I went to the film with my parents and it was in two parts with intermission in between. I saw it again in 2016. Powerful film with a magnificent score by Miklos Rozsa.
1:40 - I have no idea how a shot of a man from behind, can project so much power. No posturing, no words, nothing. He just stands, with the roman soldier experiencing near paralysis. We will probably never see this kinds of moments in cinema ever again.
Maybe the most moving movie-scene I have ever seen in my life.
It was just like this moment i felt the presence of Jesus Christ in my life. I was at my weakest point in life, suicide was an option and my whole life was a completly mess. Felt so abandoned and lonely. Suddenly i felt Jesus in my room. Such a tremendous power and love, just for me. I felt so comfort and safe, he calmed every storm. Today im happily married and got two children. The love of Jesus is real, with him and by him, life is reallly worth living, i can tell you that for sure. Nerver give up your faith and hope in this harsch world.
Never give up faith mate. Beautiful story. ✝️❤️
Amen.

I have been a Christian for 30 years. This scene makes me cry every time. The King of heaven, who gave up his glory to live amongst us, teach us and ultimately to die for us, shows in this short clip an act of loving compassion to a man at his breaking point. He does that today for everyone at that stage. What I also like is when he stands in front of the Roman centurion. The Roman stops dead in his tracks and can't comprehend who or what is he looking at. Even in human form, Jesus is THE commanding presence. I like to think of Him as being protective of His children in the same way. Imagine if that Roman saw Jesus as He is now, as depicted in Revelation. He would fall down as dead. Praise to the all powerful, all loving Savior, Jesus Christ!
There are so many things I love about this monumental scene. We see a man succumbing to the torture of thirst, not just physical but spiritual thirst caused by bitterness, unforgiveness and revenge that weary and dry the soul to dust. The man's desperate cry for help to the righteous and merciful God who sees and knows all. How his humble prayer is answered, not just instantly, but completely. The Water of Life gave him a seemingly unending supply in such a small vessel. As the man quenched his physical thirst, the Lord God disguised in human flesh, lovingly strokes his creation's hair with a strong yet gentle hand, comforting him in his distress. And when the threat of punishment for the mercy shown him comes at him, the Lord of Life stands to face it, quietly defending the one he has lavished his mercy upon, stopping the aggressor in his tracks and making him ashamed of himself. And as the beaten down man has recovered his strength, he reaches out and reciprocates the gentle touch with gratitude on his face. He stands before his God and can't keep his eyes off him. He wants to stay in his presence, but he is forced by his temporary circumstances to move on. But he can't look away, so he gazes upon him until the limit is reached, all the while his God is standing and keeping his eye on him, letting him know he will always be there, watching over him. It's so beautiful, makes me weep every time!😭 How I love you my LORD and my God, my Savior, Jesus!😭❤️
Beautifully expressed. God bless you
Beautifully written... ❤❤❤❤
Your interpretation of the scene moved me to tears 😭 as much as the scene did...
1:40 Its like Jesus telepathically forced that roman guard to have a compassionate thought for a moment and he was paralyzed by it and forced to back down. Far more powerful than an aggressive stare.
@Magno Avatar Ben Hur never existed, it's all fiction.
Nah just don't complain about it
When God answers your prayer in the most literal sense.

Yo jamás podré dejar de conmoverme asta las lágrimas de ver esta maravillosa e inmortal escena de Ben- Hur.
Yes!!!!!!
This is one of my 5 top absolute all time greatest movies and I'm 59 years old this year 2023. First saw this on TV in black and white in 1969!!
The fact that the Lord’s Face isn’t shown to me is one of the most precious and powerful aspects of this scene. The look on Judah’s face is enough to say thank you.....even though in awe he can’t speak. The centurion was in charge until the moment he looked into the eyes of the Real Master and he backs down like a whipped pup. 💪💪🙏🙏✝️ The Face of God is a wonderful and awesome mystery.
Could this be the MOST thought provoking 2 minutes in motion picture history??
They seemed to crucify him easily enough!
not a whipped pup but a regretted monster
That was Chris Cristopherson.
good they didnt show the face if God
One of the most beautifully moving scenes in all cinema, period.
Surely, one of the most moving and powerful scenes in film history. Just saying.
Se7enwonders Maybe I can agree with that. Especially the slow reveal.
Amen the best
Lol but if it was mohammed it wouldnt mean anything to you billion people.... But would be holy to these other billion... See how odd this is?
J P I hear what your saying but then ( as I understand and please correct me if I’m mistaken) Islam forbids any images of Mohammed. Which of course would include those of the cinematic variety. So surely that scenario would never happen.
Yes, and the music by the legendary Miklos Rosa ..wow
Imagine looking directly into the eyes of Christ.
Right! I would definitely cry
Mystic107 There have been many, one of which st Faustina described his gaze as unfathomable love, that each time he visited her, she wanted to go with him.
Laura Streeter I’m sorry but it’s since been proven in so many ways to be otherwise 😊
matt kylie Yes..you are right..how would you not want to go with Him!! Jesus, I trust in You!
@Dorothy Crawley Negative. Politically correct nonsense
This is a movie and this movie tells a story, has a plot, has characters and is an absolute classic. I am an old man, when Juda asks God to help him I feel it.
Lately, I've been feeling discouraged and this scene came to mind. Haven't seen it in many years. Thank you, Lord. Through every need, You have seen me through. No matter how hard life has been, I've never missed a meal. The healing love of Christ is always with us. I'm so grateful 🙏🏾❤️
What a scene this is. The most beautiful and powerful scene in history of Jesus and we don’t need to see His face or hear His voice. Such a genius scene
How you know is jesus? we can not see his face. Could be anyone.
@@NACHOOFF We know it's Jesus, because Ben Hur did the same and offered him water at the end.
So beautiful!!! 😍😍😍
jesus love us pray Jerusalem pry pope francies this saint man every religion must connect all the people amen.
absolutely! My father talked about this scene a lot and finally took us to see this movie..... this is the best scene in the history of cinema till date.
That gentle, kind hearted carpenter gave my soul water when it was desperate and thirsty. I will always love him and be grateful for that.
La mejor escena de Jesús, donde sin decir una palabra, dice todo el poder, la compasión y su naturaleza
I just love Charlton Heston In every film he starred.
The man playing the Roman soldier should get star billing for his reaction to Jesus in this one scene.
The actor playing the part was not cast for the part. he was just an extra that the director thought looked the part when he saw him around the set. Never acted in any movie before or since. Great direction and set-up of the scene by Wyler.
Wow he looked like a true actor
Every time I see this one scene, I can’t help but to cry. The sheer expression of Jesus giving water to BenHur, and knowing that a savior has come to Benhur in his time of need. Just the same way as we call upon our Lord Jesus in our time of need. And when Jesus hears our prayers, and delivers, it’s like a drink of cool water refreshing us. Allowing us to know and praise Him even more.🙏🏽
God is good ALL the time
The greatest scene of all movies of all time
From 6 decades of movie watching, these three minutes remain my all time favorite.
Wow you must have some experience! I'm only eighteen, I could only dream :D
I agree 100%!
This scene alone was better than the entire new ben hur movie
Yesssssss!!!
Any random 10 seconds of the original Ben Hur is better than the entire new Ben Hur movie
I haven't seen the new version. Don't want to. How do you top Charlton Hesston ' s depiction of Ben Hur?
That was a piece of Garbage n should not be called Ben Hur!
In my opinion, that scene alone triumphs over many of the greatest films in cinema history.
Ben-Hur 1959 has the best portrayal of Jesus Christ in cinema. His presence just radiates love and kindness without even saying a single word. The fact that we never see his face up close makes his appearance seem even more divine, otherworldly, and awe inspiring than it would have been if he just had a normal talking role.
I first saw this as a 7-8 year old and now I am 48, and I have seen this movie and scene at least a dozen times and even today I get goosebumps - JC’s presence is surreal and a balm for the soul and I am not even a religious man - amazing piece of cinema and emotion
This scene was done so well demonstrating the love and power of Christ especially when the Roman Centurian tried to stop the Lord from giving Ben Hur some water. He instantly knew who Jesus was and felt ashamed for his actions. Ben Hur is a classic !
+dinomate01 no! thats not quite right.
+Michael Leo Paglia Really how do you figure ?
+dinomate01 When he looked at him, and tried to stop him, he unknowingly felt the quiet unspoken power, and was confused and perplexed at his inability to carry out his intentions, he did not know why.
+Michael Leo Paglia Interesting. I think he definitely felt something. I believe that The Lord (Jesus Christ) could see all His (the Roman centurion's) faults & thoughts and the centurion knew it and was ashamed of what he was about to do. I believe The Lord knows us better than we know ourselves. It's such a powerful scene and it's only one of many that makes this film a true classic :) Btw have you ever seen Ben Hur in 70 mmm ? Spectacular to say the least !! Widescreen presentation with 6 track magnetic sound :) A special experience although the love scenes with Charlton Heston and Esther seemed drawn out a tad !
When a person comes face to face with the Lord Jesus Christ (the only perfect, just and holy man) he sees himself for what he really is: a rotten sinner. This actor portrayed it perfectly. Shame, guilt, and awe.
Great performance of the one who portrayed Christ. No speaking, just gestures, actions, looks, and silence. You let the audience experience the miracle rather than relying on exposition.
I love the tenderness with which Jesus takes care of Ben Hur's needs. Definitely and tear jerker.
Well said.
It was actually great direction. The actor didn't really have to act at all. A very powerful scene, but the director had the good taste to leave our own personal image of Christ intact. I mean, no Christian could possibly want to carry an actor's face into the spiritual content of his religious life. The new movie, predictably, does just that. Tasteless, and they even change the story.
@My Own Private Idaho That could be interpreted as God and Adam in Michelangelo's painting.
The gospel is the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM! Repent and believe the gospel! Follow Jesus’ teachings! Jesus is going to return and set up the kingdom of God ON THE EARTH! God’s government ON THE EARTH! The Messiah will resurrect his people! The destiny of the Messiah and his people is to be ON THE EARTH! The renewed restored earth! God also dwelling with them! Rev 21 Jesus said the Father is the only true God! John 17 3 And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. RSV Only-monos God-theos Monos theos Monotheism The Father Jesus is the one sent by the true God (the Father)! Jesus never claimed to be God, Jesus said he has a God! Jesus has a God! Jesus died! God can’t die! God raised Jesus from the dead!
I'm from Michigan and it was two months after my dad died and it was a very brutal winter. I shoveled out one of the cars so it can be used for emergencies. I just got done shoveling and I have MS so I was completely worn out from shoveling and a state plow comes by my driveway and covers my car with packed snow. I was living with my mom taking care of her and at the moment the plow undid everything I did and I was giving up and completely tired and weak, two men out of nowhere with shovels came and shoved out my car. I never have seen them before as I live in a small town. I thanked and asked these men what their names were. One of them said I'm Angel and this is Gabe. The entire time I felt like they were different in a wonderful way. They were angels.
Such a powerful way of showing Jesus's power without any flashy magic stuff. The centurion is puzzled, in wonder and ultimately ashamed of his actions. Amazing scene and acting.
From Remington Olmsted (officially he is playing a Decurion - 10 men, rather than 100).
“He gave me hope, when hope was gone! He gave me strength to journey on…..”
A man of culture! :)
Amen!
I always think of this exact same quote when I watch this scene!
Amen🙏💯💕💕
We will need this hope and confidance in the near future
This is one of the greatest depictions of Christ. So simple, beautiful and pure.
You are truly are the king of kings!
Truly amazing how powerful one small act of kindness can be
Im not religious but this scene has so much power. It is very well made. A genius made it
may Our Lord draw you to Himself, only He can give us the Living Water
Not only a genius but a man who started to make a film against God, gathered all the data, and came up with this film..... his life changed while he was gathering the data and realised that Jesus is indeed God!
There should be a law against remaking classical films like this.
If only there was a rule for remaking the classic films my friend if only
This is a remake
Heston actually returned in a 2003 animated version.
+Daniel Oleszek I was just in disappointment when I saw the trailer for the "Brother against Brother" remake.
You are right!
I love this scene and the last 10 minutes the best. What an awesome film of the Christ!
“You truly are the King of kings”
What an honour and a privilege, to look at the face of JESUS !!
Yes, and for Jesus to give you a drink of much needed water. To have lived at that time and to cross paths with the Savior would have been incredible! What will it be like to meet Him face to face in heaven?! For believers, the best day of our life will be the day we leave this earth and meet our Lord!
@@billh.8515 Amen! Blessed are those who haven’t seen and Believe!
@@Garyruizjr Amen!!!! Honestly, my desire to see and talk with Jesus wayyy higher than my desire to see heaven, I still want to see heaven as in "go to heaven", I had to make that clear in my prayers one night lol. Can't wait for the day.
How you know is jesus? we can not see his face. Could be anyone.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand his face is blocked out in the movie. Great.
From a technical standpoint it's a masterpiece. 60 years old and looks like it could have been filmed yesterday. Better yet, the colors, saturation and contrast are incredible. Add to that the message of Christ, without ever showing his face on screen or a him uttering single word. Powerful stuff indeed. Ben Hur is one of only 3 movies that hold the record of 11 Oscars (the other ones being Titanic and The Return of the King). Being a Tolkien fanatic myself I'm satisfied that the Trilogy also won a total of 17 Academy Awards. But as a single film I would still hold no problem with Ben Hur being the number one of all time! Consider how many fewer categories there were in those days, and it make it even more impressive!
The only movie I know of which is equally beautiful as the book by Lew Wallace.
Absolutely Right! Ben Hur is one of my favorite movies, if not THE favorite!
You are right to point out that there were fewer Oscar categories in 1959. The awards for Sound and Visual Effects were many years later each split into two. Since B-H won both categories in 1959 it is a pretty safe bet that it would have won two more making 13. In addition, its only loss among its 13 nominations was for screenplay and that was almost certainly the result of a big flap over the authorship of the screenplay. Karl Tunberg wrote the first draft but Wyler decided it was not very good and needed to be rewritten. Several writers were flown to Rome, including Gore Vidal, S.N. Berman and especially Christopher Fry. It was Fry who stayed though he entire production and wrote most of the script according to Wyler. Wyler insisted that Fry be given credit for the screenplay or at least share the credit with Tunberg. The Screen Actors Guild, however, refused and awarded sole credit to Tunberg. Wyler was so furious that he took out an ad in Variety urging members of the Academy not to vote for Ben Hur's screenplay. They apparently took his advice and this was the only loss for Ben Hur that night. Thus, Ben Hur would/should have had 14 wins adjusted, so to speak, for "inflation" and an unfortunate scandal. Furthermore, neither LOTR nor Titanic won any acting awards whereas Ben Hur won two - for Actor and Supporting Actor. Those other two films basically just cashed in on the increased number of technical awards. Failing to garner a single acting award, in my opinion, lowers the status of those two other films when comparing them to Ben Hur. They are fine films and I like them both, but Ben Hur's achievements surpasses them both.
The reaction of the Roman soldier says it all. Just stood there in awe, clearly understanding that what he was doing was wrong and was sad with his choices. That's what it looked like to me
I haven't seen this film yet, just this bit made me cry buckets. Made me think that...an act of kindness can change someone's day, maybe even their entire life. ❤
