The Iron Ore Train in Mauritania is a colossal railway system that spans over 700 kilometers across the Sahara Desert. Loaded with thousands of tons of iron ore, this train is a true marvel, connecting the mines of Zouérat to the Atlantic port of Nouadhibou... and today, we I try to ride it for the first time! Great adventure Harry; well done brother, how lucky you are. Your journey brought back happy memories of almost 50 years ago when I was about 25 and living in the UK and then travelled with a friend down through Morocco and Algeria in the back of an ex-Pioneer Concrete mixer truck fitted with an ex-army canopy, heading for Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon. But the truck broke down in the middle of the Algerian Sahara desert near a beautiful town called In Salah. We camped in a date plantation by an Oasis for about a week, drank fresh water from the Oasis spring, picked fresh dates off the trees, encountered, sand storms, scorpions and giant camel spiders as we slept on the sand under an incredibly starry sky. The owners of the truck were able to get the truck engine fixed, but decided to return to the UK instead of going on to Nigeria etc. I went back with them as far as Morocco and stayed on there in Casablanca, Fez and Essaouira for another 3 months before returning to UK - that 3 month sojourn in Morocco is a whole other story ! In September I'll be retuning to Nepal for my 10th visit and will stay for 3 months. Have lots more happy and safe travels bro.😊
