Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 Tutorial: How to Upgrade the RAM & SSD(s) | English
The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 with an AMD Ryzen 4000 Processor is one of the best budget choices for a gaming laptop. We'll show you how to upgrade its RAM and SSD(s) in a thorough step-by-step guide.
All you need to open the IdeaPad Gaming 3 is a Phillips head screwdriver and a spudger or guitar plectrum.
The SO-DIMM RAM found in our model is DDR4 3200MHz, so you'll best be advised to match this frequency when upgrading.
There are actually two M.2 PCIe slots - even though one is a bit hidden away. Both slots will take SSDs up to the 2280 form factor.

Thanks for publishing this. I am new to M.2 drives so the explanation for the standoff, and your link to initializing the drive made this very easy.
Fantastic step-by-step instructions and done efficiently! No annoying music or extra bloat to make a needlessly longer video. Great edits to the work being done.
I came here because I had been struggling to open the damn lid for 15 minutes on my brand new laptop. You gave me the courage to use the force it needed.
You remind me of Professor in Money Heist haha. Thank you for the info btw.
hahaha yes! i was wondering who he reminded me of!
ahh yes that's who he reminded me of !!!
Haa epic observation 😍😂
Jajajaja lol sii el profesor
Haha.. Sergio Marquina/Salva
Wow... he did REALLY WELL. Simple straight to the point. Thank for letting us k ow where the TWO PCI-E M.2 slots are and how to PROPERLY configure. EZ PZ.
A heads-up: the little plastic clips that hold the base plate on are easy to break if you're not careful. Do not advocate for pulling the plate off without a pic/tool to slide and decouple or = broken clips. I am living proof.
The clips are the usual plasti clips that you can find on most of our common plastic devices (TV controller, Joystick, XBOX, Playstation and so on). You have to have some thin flat screwdriver or similar (better with a plastic end) and you try ti identify the place of those little clips and give a gentle push. You do that enough to bend gently the "plastic" clip just enough to free the opposite slot that blocekd it@@hello_mashimaro
Oh hell yeah, I was super careful when removing and still snapped two clips. I'm sure the reason why there are so many clips holding it in place is because they KNOW some are going to break.
@@iitzfizzmine was fine but two screws were not having it, after some time i just resorted to violence and luck would have it it didnt damage any others on its way out
This was amazing! I was always hesitant to open up my laptop and over paid sending my old one to a local shop to upgrade, but I just did it and it is awesome! Thanks!
Excellent info. I didn't know you could jump up to 2280 ff SSD on both slots. Great news.
This was very easy to follow, and I was confident thanks to this video. This worked for me. Appreciate your time!
there are lots of videos on KZhead but this is what I'm looking for the most, thank you bro
finally I found the answer to how to fix that ssd card in the 2nd slot! thanx!
Great video easy to understand. Keep it up 👍🏻
Thanks so much for putting the more efficient method second after I already tried the first one! 👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH! now i can finally upgrade my ssd storage
very important to show people every step, including how you ground yourself.
very informative and straight to the point, thanks for this. Also love your hair.
Thanks! You helped me upgrade to dual channel ram!
this was really simple and useful thank you!
You really should do more videos in english as that will grow your channel. You have such high quality content. Short and straight to the point.
Very informative and well written video. Cheers
Very easily upgraded my laptop without any issues due to this guide , thank you. P.s I would recommened using a plastic card to open the clips, they are easy to break.
OMG Thank u wery wery much, i was looking for this exactly! I'm grateful!
I didn't know I can move that standoff into the 2.5 inch ssd area, I have been searching for that connector for 6 months now, watched every video, read every forum, finally found your video, thank you for this video.
so it's either ssd or hdd not both?
@@mahmoudabouhager yes
@@ankursharma1461 i see a video where he puts 3ssd
@@mahmoudabouhager not possible
@@ankursharma1461 Can we use two m.2 2280 ssd? Mine already comes with 2280 sdd, specification say i can install one 2280 and one 2242 ssd but i am not able to find good 2242 ssd at reasonable price.
Thank you so much El Professor!
You solved the problem buddy thank you nobody has shown how to upgrade nvme 2280 pcle ssd to laptop
Love your vids. THANKS!!!
Just a heads up, mine came with a 2280 preinstalled and I had already bought a 2280 thinking it would come with a 2242 as I'd seen in every other video. I still ended up swapping out the intel 2280 with the SK Hynix one I bought because the stock intel one was pretty slow (Hynix one 3x faster) and I'm going to buy a 2242 when I get paid, but check first which slot is free.
Helped me a lot!
Very good this video! This video helped me a lot, especially on the issue of SSDs. Show!
Thanks for the info!
Very Informative GJ!
The exact video I needed wow
Thank you for the video, it just had the info I needed!
Excellent, thank you 🙏
Great video! One problem I came across though - my device does not have the SSD standoff post - and most generic ones dont fit into that slot. It looks like Lenovo may be using a different /uncommon size of sort ? Would be great if you could guide on what specific standoff post size fits Lenovo - and where we can get one.
Thanks for information
Excellent information. Thanx
I bought this laptop knowing it's a well made, worth it Laptop. I didn't know it was this amazing
Most laptops in this price range have these slots. It's kinda must have these days. This laptop is still best tho.
@@gravy4708 three slots, won't it affect performance? Like dual channel something? I'm not a PC whiz~
@@Neek0tine I don't quite understand what you mean. Can you explain? And yeah, dual channeling affects performance. It's extremely important for gaming.
@@gravy4708 Hmm I'm not quite sure about what I'm talking myself, I just thought that odd numbered Ram slots are not cool?
@@Neek0tine Yeah your feeling is quite right. When equal RAMs work in pairs it gives additional boost to the performance. Always opt for it.
Thank you mate!
SOLID EXPLANATION AND TUTORIAL KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDS!
Mh, hello! I have a question regarding the RAM of this laptop: does it support two dual rank memory modules? Or is the maximum supported two single rank modules?
Super clear and informative. Just bought the laptop so very useful info too. Thanks very much.
How is it after 2 weeks?
@@saidiyassine8135 very happy with it, I will definitely bump it up in terms of storage soon and ram maybe not so soon because I don't play the latest or most performance-intensive games. Boots very fast, runs smooth, keyboard is comfy, the screen is great and I fully trust the hardware. If you play heavy games though, performance will be at the expense of quietness, it can sound like a blow-dryer at times, and because of the location of the fan the keyboard can heat up a bit when temps go up, but those are my only complaints.
Hi, this is such an interesting video.
Thanks for very useful video!
Awesome video. Thank you !
Great video thank you
Please tell me what the name of the connector to connect the extra SSd if please please please
thanks this was great
Thank you. The ssd upgrade worked perfectly! Model: Lenovo ideapad Gaming 3i 82CG0002BR Greetings from Brazil!
Hello! If I add the second m.2 nvme drive, do I need to add a heatsink for it?
Una pregunta, al poner 2 memoria ram se aprovecha el dual channel??? O no lo reconocería como dual???
Thanks a lot for the video, Just got my laptop today and the video was clear, short and sweet. Just what I needed, Thanks
Great production quality, presentation and tips. Serious content creator ;) Also, you have something about Steve Jobs in you. And it's not cashing on peoples' hard work.
thank you, man. It's very useful.
Huh. I just upgraded to 32GB ram, but had no idea I could add a second SSD to this thing. Great video! Thanks.
Do you have the intel or AMD version? I thought it supported 16Gb max RAM
@@ffsolutions9442 I have the AMD
@@Thomassassin Thank you! :)
Hey, I wonder if you have a link where to buy RAM for this laptop. I have the same machine and I am looking for a RAM upgrade as well.
Hey, did you already have that screw for the extra ssd or did you have to buy it? Also can i put an nvme ssd in?
Hi mate. Do you think I can add another stick of Kingston 8GB of RAM, 3200MHz CL22 alongside that Samsung, or should I buy a 16GB Dual-Channel Set?
Obrigado cara, ajudou demais, nossa...
What kind of screw do you need for a larger SSD card?
i have a question , if i want to change the ram from 8G to 16G i have to buy two 8G for the two slots or one 16G wich will only fill the one slot and the other one will be empty , will the laptop work normally if only one of the slots is filled ?
which company ram does it have pre install and can we upgrade a 8gb variant to 32gb
Great video But i have a question Do you reassemble the aluminium cover of ssd after you connect the second ssd? Or the aluminium cover will be not used after adding the second ssd?
do you not reapply the silver thing that was on the ram?
Can you help me on how to make a local disk d (also regarding the ideal size) on this laptop?
So after u install the second ssd, do u need to screw back the 2.5 tray or not?
is there a way for you to do a fan replacement video?
Thank you very much. I have been looking to understand how to insert a secondary M.2 SSD.
well done
hi, which is the serial number for the flex, to install the HD?
O wow. Thets great. And hold up. You can add 2 ssds? Looks like, if I manage to buy this aptop, it sould km last me at least 4 years...hopefully
hi, just recieved my customised ideapad gaming 3 laptop today, but i ordered ssd by my own, which is (WD BLUE SN550, 1 tb, will it be ok to install?
I just bought another M.2 for my homemate, and saw than he had his 2.5" and also that main M.2 already installed... so I removed that man 2242 M.2, put in new 2280 M.2 and ducttaped that main 2242 M.2 to 2.5" drive and it works lmao :D
Correct me if I'm wrong, but both M.2 slots are "M key" connectors and not "B" or "B+M", right?
Amazing, means we can add one more SSD along with what it came with
@@KEEVVY OMG 😂😂
@@KEEVVY well you are using 2 or 1 SSD?

Great info and very well explained. I just have a question 3:38 Why is it not possible to put a normal size nvme (2280) if it's already a 2.5 HDD? I thought it was possible and didn't affect anything else the first time I opened the laptop
so I bought this laptop a month ago but it came with two 4gb ram. I shouldn't have a problem upgrading to two 16gb, right?
I'm surprised you didn't get a sata cable because I did receive one along with my laptop.
Thanks ❤️
Upto what capacity ssd we can install in lenovo idealpad gaming 3i i7 10 gen… please let me know…thanks
I’m actually wondering if there’s any way to have 3 Ssd’s in this laptop. I already have a system and software only 250gb m.2 drive and I’m thinking about replacing my 1 tb hdd. But since it would be mostly for working and gaming, I’ve heard from others to have at least a separate drive for cache (video editing) so I was maybe thinking getting a drive for projects only and use some storage of the hdd as a cache destination folder. BUT, I just don’t know if I could have 3 drives of any kind in this laptop at the same time
Hey, I have this laptop and I wanna know if I can add an extra ssd slot, I know it has one but I dont know what size or type should I buy and if I can put it on myself. Information online about this isnt very clear
hello, how can i check which ram module my version using? i want to add another one
Is it OK to leave the battery connected when changing RAM and SSD?
Consulta.. las rejillas de los ventiladores se me destiñeron y tiene 3 meses de que lo compre y solo lo uso en base con ventilador..es normal que aya pasado eso o ay algo malo??
So I can put two 80mm SSD nvme in the same time right ?, bit confuse bcs in the video he still use 42mm for the main storage while changing the 2nd storage
It all went a bit to fast for this newby here. I got the 16gb RAM but I'm trying to get Davinci Resolve to run a bit faster on it. So what do I need to buy to do so?
4:25 you saved my life I was thinking the damn standoff won’t work lmfao
What do you do to laptop before adding it
very good
is there any extra screw for the m2 ssd in this laptop or can ı use the sata ssd cases screw for m2 ssd ????
Hi, I have a question? I have a laptop Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH05 (82EY00N4MB) if I want to turn on this laptop, the red light blinks when the power is on. Can you advise me what is the reason for the flashing red light next to the power plug?
there is no problem with the temperature having two m.2?
so if i already have a hdd installed i have to use a 2242 ssd if i wanna upgrade my main storage?
Don't know if I missed this or something but are you supposed to put the ram covering back on or do you just leave it?

Can someone share the name of the cable needed to connect a 2.5 ssd?
I would like to install new RAM and upgrade the storage. After install them, should I reinstall the Win system?
Could you help Me to find a sata cable for 2.5 SSD pls?
Here in my country it comes with a 1Tb HDD, why can't put a 2242 because it doesn't have scaffolding screws? and finally using the nvme extend to 2280 is even unreadable. Any missed configurations?
