  • Wow, great timing, Brent. Just got my 23 Ultra this morning. Can't wait to try it out. Also very eager to see what you can do with astrophotography with the S 23. Looks like you are at the City of Rocks.

  • Really good and interesting video. Can't wait to see the astrophotography one. I think it's crazy how in one pocket you can have all those focal lengths and a decent quality, it's just like you said, it is for fun! I wanted to say you though that when I tried many many times the comparison between 200mp and 12mp binned, there was always a great amount of detail more in the 200 mp, I don't know what happened in that image, actually it suprised me.

Just the smoothness of the interface alone makes most of the older Samsung devices feel like ancient technology. Not to mention all the other improvements such as greatly improved battery life, boosted storage, refined camera setup, etc.

  • Mannnnnn! Many thanks, Brent, for your time and knowledge...it's been super helpful to me and I've learned a ton learning to take better shots with my S22 Ultra. Appreciate you taking the time to help us smart phone users out...and btw...thank you for your service, brother, from a former "puddle pirate"! 👍 From my DSLR /mirrorless days, I understand DOF and how to get "tack sharp photos" from foreground to backgound. With my Z5, it had an "auto" feature in it to do a focus stack series which could be later combined in Lr /Ps. Prior to that, I used to do manual stacks with my D7500. With a smart phone, though, I don't know if I'm just dense or just simply missing the boat when it comes to DOF. Watching this video, when you were taking shots, I never saw you place / adjust the focus square anywhere before taking a photo (like with your wife standing in the crater starting about 18:08). Is that simply because you left the focus on "auto" and let the camera figure it out? By my understanding, if you wanted to highlight a foreground object and blur the background, you'd go off autofocus and place the focus point on something in the immediate foreground (or get real close to your foreground object), correct? And, vice versa if you wanted foreground blur with sharp background? I guess what I'm asking, with no aperture to set a desired DOF, if you want the ENTIRE picture to be in focus, do you simply let the camera do it (autofocus...subject to which lens it's using) or is there a "middle ground" in manual focusing where you can place your focal point on the the mid-ground and then (hopefully), everything from front to back will be in focus? Lastly, you mentioned doing a focus stack series which can later be combined in Lr / Ps. Is that process any different than bringing in a similaly-shot series in from a DSLR / mirrorless? Cheers from Bend, Oregon...some of that New Mexico high desert looks a lot like around here! 😉

    @neilmackey9626@neilmackey96268 ай бұрын
    • Hey thanks man, I'm so glad the video helped! Yeah, I used the auto focus for all of those, and just tapped on the screen where I wanted it to focus. If you want the entire picture in focus, then it's still all about subject distance. The closer you are to your subject, the more out of focus the background will be, due to physics. These sensors are smaller, yes, and inherently have a smaller DOF, but they are getting larger these days and are still subject to background blur when closer distances are evolved. In the case of camera lady being in that rock well, I was using the wide angle lens for starters, and she wasn't super close to me, so even though I focused on her, she was far enough away from the camera that she and pretty much everything else is in focus. Hopefully that helps explain it it a little bit.

    • Thanks! Unfortunately, there's no way to do astro with the 200mp, as that is only available in the regular jpeg mode and not the pro or expert raw modes. they have the 50mp option, though IMHO there isn't really a point in using the 50mp option for astro images.

  • Hey Brent, as a fellow messed up shoulder sufferer, best of luck with the surgery. unfortunately i don't have any cheat codes for surgery recovery, other than to be realistic about your expectation of function, and go to PT as long as insurance will let you. I'm at over a year, and still going, still seeing improvement. I have a camera question as well: have you ever used the Swarovski TLS adapter for spotting scopes? I've seen some impressive pictures with it, and I'm thinking about getting one of their scopes for observation this year, and certainly, the TLS is cheaper than any lens with decent reach, provided you already own the scope.

    @groghunter7403@groghunter7403 Жыл бұрын

Unfortunately, this will be my 9th surgery, so I'm sadly very familiar with recoveries and the PT process (the military was not kind to my body, lol). Hopefully this next one goes well. I've never used a scope before, so I don't know how that would perform, unfortunately.

So while I have ya. On the r6mk2 for example If I have a hawk perched like 150 feet away. With back button focus I hit my main spot focus to aquire initial focus. Then when I hit the star button for eye tracking why does my focus square go about everywhere other than the eye? Using ef to rf canon 100 to 400L2. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Seems to nail focus if bird is in flight. And I'm talking about a hawk perch on clean perch. Nothing in the way. Thanks Brent 😊

  • Thanks. Great video. I'm finding something strange with the cameras. 1) Close/shut down the camera app. 2) Start camera app and choose Photo mode and select 10x. It's actually using the 3x lens. Why isn't it using the 10x lens? 3) Press Home button and then open the camera app again, it's now using the 10x lens. I'm just confused at which point the camera switches from using the 3x lens to the 10x lens. It doesn't seem to be at exactly 10x zoom. I placed a sticky note over the 10x lens to confirm the above.

    @spincolor@spincolor Жыл бұрын
    • Samsung has always had an issue with that. For some reason they have an algorithm that will tell it to switch over to the 3x or main sensor if it thinks there's not enough light in the scene, and then it will just crop in on that instead of using the actual 10x lens, which is really annoying. I think the only way from keeping it from doing that is to use pro mode.

  • You as pro photographer using pro mode looks good.But what do you think about auto mode?I mean most of the people will use that.What i did see is that pictures are way to bright and colors are too much saturated.So much that pictures looks like crap.How to fix that?Or that only can samsung fix with software?

    @ivanosijek2306@ivanosijek2306 Жыл бұрын
    • You know what's crazy? I do videos where I don't use pro mode and people get upset, saying I should have used pro mode to get the most out of the images. Then I do vides where I use pro mode and people say I should just shoot in auto regular modes because that's what most people use...I just can't win huh?! lol. But yeah, Samsung definitely over-processes their jpeg images, which is why (like I said in the video) that the only way to not have that happen is to shoot in pro mode, but you can just set everything to auto within pro mode and just enable the raw + jpeg option that way you'll have the unedited un-processed raw to edit if you want, but you'll also have the jpeg for quick snapshots...again, I'm pretty sure I discussed and showed this in the video.

    • @@BrentHall i did watch video but i must missed something.Funny thing is that you are one of least people saying that s23u is making over processed images.on auto mode.most of people is blind or dont want to see how bad images are at auto mode.They are too bright,too saturated,so much that phone making pictures bad.And for me that is deal breaker.I want a phone where i can get it out of pocket press button and that auto mode make nice picture.For me,as right not that is not.For example my s21u is making nice photos on auto mode.This is just bad,at least for auto.

    • The cameras on the s23u are not as good as everyone says, especially considering the price. And yes, I bought one and I'm not returning it, but the photos from my previous Note 10+ are much nicer and more natural. It's just my opinion.

    • @@ivanosijek2306 why return the phone when you can just take pictures with Pro mode while keeping all settings in Auto? This way you avoid the overprocessing from the auto camera. The phone just came out, there hasn't been any software update for the camera. Even with my Pixel 7 Pro I still had to pretty much always always go to Edit and select Enhance because the pictures were underexposed and looking cold.

  • Nice, but the sensor is still 1/1.3-inch. Yes, they do voodoo magic with the likes of pixel binning, but until they get bigger sensors in a cell phone form factor... A whole lot of marketing is talking to you.

    • Yeah, I definitely agree, and have said as much many many times on my phone videos; however, that's not the point of these videos. Phones will likely never catch up to being comparable to proper cameras, and I think most people know that. The point of these videos, at least why I make them, is to help people who might have never otherwise, get into photography, and realize that they can start making images and learning photography even if they only have a phone. In that regard, phone cameras these days are quite incredible.

  • Been in Photography for years, I just bought a new s23 ultra, only for the Camera, since I saw reviews, I straight away set it up on 200 and against my old Samsung A21s, exact same Landscape image, I just Blew all that money for nothing, there is no difference on the 200 MP setting whatsoever Resolution sharpness wise between it and my old Samsung, I've seen all those KZhead Guys doing a great job, but for the life of me, I can't get my 23 Ultra to take on the old a21s , am well out of Pocket now, what a waste of cash for nothing. 2 Images side by side, same landscape subject no more Detail in the 23 Ultra image...

  • 200 and 50 megapixels look more like a gimmick. Samsung does make a app "camera assistant" to tweak your photo's. I have played around with camera assistant.

    @michaelriverajr8891@michaelriverajr8891 Жыл бұрын
    • At this point, I don't personally think they're a complete gimmick, but I do think they're over-marketed, and heavily misunderstood and misused. I also think their processing algorithms for the 200mp just aren't very good yet, so in most cases, it just doesn't seem advantageous to use that feature, at least for me anyway. The 50mp option in pro mode is better now though.
