Wow, this is literally the best tutorial for the most intimidating aspect of the smartphone camera settings for people not familiar with photography.
Hey thanks for that, I really appreciate it and I'm glad it helped!
learnt more in 30 min than i have in 2 weeks of having the s23 ultra thanks Brent. keep up the good work.
Hey thanks, I'm really glad the video helped!
I promise you! He's the truth for sure!
Amazing as always, Brent! Keep up the great work! I've learned a lot about my S23 ultra
Great insights - thank you!
So helpful. thank you. Noone else comes close
Been watching your videos for over a year and I just so happen to purchase the Galaxy s23 Ultra recently so very excited to see more videos. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
You bet man, thanks for sticking around!
Thanks for the great video Brent, lots of info to digest. Take care of that shoulder.
Awesome stuff! Big help
Excellent photo at the end with telephoto lens. Great details even when zooming the video
Thank you, this was very insightful! You've helped me a lot!
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
Thank you for this amazing informative video
Thank you very much for enlightening us on how to use Pro mode
awesome video as always very detailed explaining promode
3 years ago i learn how to use pro mode on mobile phones. love you since then.
This was a great video for the pro mode. Could you please do one on using the pro mode for macro photography.
Thanks for this video. I learned a lot liked and subscribed.
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
Thank you. Good explanations. I learn using s23 ultra from your video. Keep it up sir.
Thank you. This is the first cellphone I selected because of the camera. I've been a shooter for years and have finally given in to cellphone photography. That old saying about the best camera is the one on you. I've noticed that almost all of my image captures are on cellphones. Although my Galaxy Note 10+ is still functional, the advancements in technology and the fact that even AI for photography is so good, I'm now in the camp. I appreciate the tutorial you've provided. If I weren't into photography and stumbled upon your site, you did an excellent job in explaining the various settings!
Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad the video helped!
Thank you Brent for this video! I have an s23 ultra and never knew I had a pro mode because I never clicked on more. It's great that you can use external mics in the usb setting but what if you don’t want to use a mic? Instead you want to sync your pro video with a music background? Is that possible? If it is, how do you sync the audio and video?
Thanks for this, i saw option iso, speed, ev on my s23+ and had no idea what is it for or how and when to use it untill i watched this video. Great Explenation!
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
thank you very much,... this is very informative
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
Thank you Sir Brent for the helpful tutorial. I'm new to your channel. May I know the specs of your tripod?
Really helpful
Awesome video man, thanks for making this. I appreciate it! Now I can really start taking some awesome photos!
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
Your voice is very calming. Fcking great job on this tutorial. THANK YOU!! 🥰
Thanks., I appreciate that and I'm glad you liked the video!
Thanks for the great tutorial! A+ for your smooth vocal presentation!
Thanks, I'm lad you enjoyed it!
thank you. very helpful.
Great video. I have the 22 and was unaware of the Pro mode. I have been using Pro Video. Your lighting must have been very low because I always have to add an ND filter in bright sunlight.
That's super cool the "hangy thing" my kind of descriptor...
worth watching 😊
Learnt a lot! I've been playing with an Xperia 1 IV for a month and enjoying manual photography. Figured I had the best device for it but tbh, its a terrible phone and I was hoping the ultra series could answer the need for a good pro mode!
Very good, keep it up. Please show the camera screen even more than you already do :)
Great tutorial Brent and very useful. Enjoy your trip to Scotland, I live in the UK and go to Scotland every Spring and Autumn. You will love it, are you going ti Isle Of Sky and Mull? Enjoy
Thanks man, I appreciate that! We'll be kind of all over the place, from Inverness, to Skye, to Aberdeen areas.
What settings ypu recomended for landscape photography with s23 ultra in pro mode or expert raw
Im just so overwhelmed with this phone. (Camera). Having trouble with how to setup the proper camera settings. But thanks to you and the way you explain it step by step i am beginning to understand. -Thank you.
Hey thanks, I'm glad my videos are helping!
Nice job! I am finding there are to many choices of lenses, yes the options are nice but the main lens should be the best quality. My note 9 images are amazing but from my 23 ultra they are blah. Why is that? I suspect there is so much processing to cleanup the noise created from the high megapixels, what are your thoughts?
Всегда отличные видео! Спасибо большое Вам 🤝🤝🤝📷💪
Great content!!! Any vids on Expert Raw?
Thanks John, I'm glad you liked it! I have a couple where I used it to do some astrophotography, both on the S22 and S23 Ultra. No complete walkthroughs like this though, since it's basically the same. The only real differences are the extra bit depth for the images in Expert RAW and the astro mode, everything else is the same as pro mode.
This is a hidden gem. This video start like a National geography documentary but gives a bunch of extremely important knowledge. Love the video.
Thanks, I'm glad it helped!
Great video! I'd like to get your take on Expert Raw vs Pro mode and when to use each. Do you talk about that in any of your videos? I've seen some conflicting info online about the differences
I've definitely talked about it in some other recent phone videos. Don't remember exactly which ones. I think I talked about it in the S23 milky way video. Personally, I prefer to just use pro mode, have it set to raw + jpeg, and usually have the pro mode settings set to auto, unless I'm setting up a specific shot that requires some effort, like long exposure waterfalls or astro stuff. I think in general, pro mode does better for most stuff, unless you just need the astro or multiple exposure modes in expert raw (I did a recent video on that too). Pro mode has less lag, and the image quality difference is negligible for most, save the hard core pixel peepers.
As you have mentioned the wide sensor is the best one, but what would you recommend it you want to zoom in x2-x3, use the telephoto with x3 or digitally zoom in with the wide sensor and maybe apply 50 or 200mp?
I use the 3x zoom quite often. It's pretty good.
great tutorial. how do you add pro mode to the portrait photo video more list?
Watching from my s24 ultra... 1 minutes in and learned more about photography then I have my whole life
That's awesome, I'm glad it helped!
Nice video! Can you tell me what is the difference between pro and expert raw modes?
Hello Brent, Thank you for introducing the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Pro mode. I am always fascinated by the possibilities that modern smartphones offer. Sometimes I wonder why I still use a camera for landscape photography or night photography and sometimes also for macro photography. It definitely makes sense to me as I'm still using the old Galaxy S8. For the preparation to an phototripp, to get an overview about the area where I would like arroung is the S8 okay. I'm wondering whether the dynamic range will be the same as in a full frame camera. I would think it won't be the same dynamic range. But I could be wrong about my lack of experience with these modern smartphones. Gretings from Uwe Currently in Sri Lanka
The DR on phones is inherently worse than full frames, though with software enhancements such as AI and HDR, a phone can put out a jpeg that appears much higher in DR. The tech is improving a lot these days, but I still much prefer my full frame cameras.
@@BrentHall Thanks Brent for sharing this information! I'm 100% with you. I also prefer my full frame camera.
@@BrentHall Phones with properly set gcam already beat dslrs in low light granted the phone uses single frame
Got the s23 ultra for my birthday and this video helped tremendously.
Oh nice, happy belated birthday, and I'm glad the video helped!
@BrentHall thank you so much :) I went from an iPhone X to this so its a whole new world lol.
Luv Samsung product
7:33 Correct about not going past 1600! But going too low is very bad for astrophotography as it introduces read noise. I wouldn't ever go below 400, and I pretty much always shoot in 800 or 1600.
Trying to digiscope with this phone, and a 60x spotting scope. The phone focuses sharp and clear, the scope focuses sharp and clear, but when I put them together, the image is blurry. Wonder if a polarizing filter would make a difference.
For what the phone is and what it can do is OUTSTANDING samsung has really done it before their time.
Nice. Is there a video where you teach how to compose shots and play with light for mobile photography using s23 ultra?
I don't think I have a dedicated video to that particular thing, but I did talk about that a lot in my S23 for landscape video. You can find it in my S23 playlist.
This is all so new to me. And maybe this is a dumb question. But how are you getting the aspect ratio to 4:3 and 16:9. I can't figure it out
These two shots in low light look incredible compared to what they appear to look like on the tiny screen, wow Are they edited?
Enjoyed your video and have subsequently subscribed. I have the s23 Ultra and am using it to shoot underwater while it's housed in a Divevolk Seatouch 4 Max underwater housing. I'm having difficulty trying to figure out how to set my white balance while underwater. I'm thinking about buying a waterproof white/gray card and then holding it in front of my s23 Ultra while underwater, and look to see what Kelvin Temperature the "AUTO" white balance is showing and then switching my phone over to "MANUAL white balance (putting in whatever Kelvin value was showing while it was on AUTO). Does this sound like a feasible solution to determining underwater white balance, or am I misunderstanding how Auto & Manual white balances work with one another?
Yeah that's tricky. It would really depend on the scene and light. In pro ode it should show you what WB it's using when auto mode, so yeah if that looks good for what you want then you could just lock it down to that value.
Thank you for the detailed video. Like many other Samsung Galaxy users, I find the oversaturated colors absolutely awful. In PRO mode you can limit the saturation somewhat. I wonder if you can do the same for the normal mode with a custom filter. I don't understand the function of the custom filter. Could you set a well graduated photo as a filter so that the colors don't look so unrealistic?
Hello. Could you tell me what template you use?
Do you recommend 3:4 in pro mode to get the best or automatic mode too.I prefered 16:9 in automatic because it simply looked better on the screen...
It just depends on what you want. If you need the highest image quality possible, then the 3:4 is technically it, since that's actual sensor size. So all other modes are cropped into that, including eh full screen and 16:9 modes. In real world use, you may or may not be able to even notice too much of any image quality degradation in those other cropped modes though.
@@BrentHall thanks for the fast reply 💥💗
Hello excellent video to understand the pro mode. Although do you think expert raw will give me better results?
Personally, I prefer pro mode, unless you need the astro or multi exposure features. Pro mode has less shutter lag, and still puts out solid dng files for editing. Just my two cents though.
is there pro video on S23+ ? Please reply. Thank You
Hey Brent, so regarding the EV should that really even be touched at all?
The EV is just the exposure value given to show how well exposed the scene is. You change it by changing the either the shutter speed or iso, or changing the light in the scene. It's more of a guide for what the camera thinks.
I noticed that the new Lightroom AI denoise algorithm doesn't work with this phone's recent DNG files. I went back to RAW photos I shot in December, and guess what? Those RAW photos can be denoised by the new LR algorithm! After digging deeper, I realised that something happend in between. Most likely, a firmware update screwed things up. When analysing the EXIF data, we can clearly see that the new DNGs are not uncompressed RAW anymore, but Linear RAW with embedded JPEG compression. This explains why LR AI Denoise doesn't work on these files anymore I suspect that the problem started sometimes in April, when Expert RAW was added as an option inside the default camera app, in Pro mode. Expert RAW always had these linear RAW files (since these are HDR DNGs), and I suspect that when the two things were combined, the Expert RAW DNG generating algoritm replaced the original RAW algorithm. Not good. Also, as a side note: The x3 and x10 sensors have 10Mpix native resolution (3648 x 2736), but the outputs of Expert RAW and the regular camera app in photo mode are 12Mpix (4000 x 3000)! So Expert RAW is upscaling the output of the x3 and x10 cameras. This is not what RAW files are supposed to do. It only confirms that the DNG is in fact a JPEG file in a DNG container.
Oh man, I've been wondering about some of that stuff! Seriously great comment. Thanks posting, and digging into it!
@BrentHall thanks. I opened a ticked with Samsung. It would be great if more people could do it, to get their attention and prioritize a fix. The problem was identified both on S22 Ultra and an on S23 Ultra.
@@UltimaGainasomethinh New Here?
@mh7711 No. On the contrary. I just got my new S24 Ultra, and it has the same problem with JPEG compression in a DNG container when shooting in PRO mode. There is a change for Expert RAW. It's still using compression, but the exif tool is labeling as "Unknown (52546)". I suspect it's still a lossy compression. The bad news is that Open Camera and Lightoom mobile, which are able to do uncompressed RAW, are not working with S24U. The output of the main camera is scrabled.
@UltimaGaina okay trank you! I got my New s24u,too. I testet out every Mode because I just Want to shoot in raw with every lense and editing them in lightroom But Pro mode and expert mode are disgusting, Pro mode shows lots of fine details but it is very blury and when I start to sharpen in lightroom I get ugly wormy artefacts, and using expert raw the images are way too sharp and less detail, muddy texture, so ugly. The Pro mode jpgs look OK but it is not that what I want.i hope they will fix the modes in further updates.
I have a 200mb option when I use that it is like a cropped shot very beautiful details but I don't understand why some options get lost using 200mb. I liked to do multi shoot of myself in same settings but can't find how to do it. Burst shot only works on regular settings
Hi, would you say the Pro mode is better than the Expert Raw? I'm trying both and see a difference, which would you advise I use? Thanks!
Technically expert raw has a bit more color depth I think, but it also has worse shutter lag, and I don't really notice any difference in real world use, so unless I need the astro mode, I tend to just use the pro mode. That's just me though.
@@BrentHall Hi, pro mode i guess is the better option than the normal mode for more natural looking photos?
Wow.
Recently I´ve noticed a crop in frame when using stabilization mode in videos, all 3 lenses, so I´m wondering if it´s worth it or not, you get a bit wider shot when it´s off, and because you can always use stabilization in post. I´m using S22+ Exynos.. have you noticed the same?
All digital stabilizers will crop into the frame in order to stabilize it. How much it crops in depends on the level of smoothness it's creating. It's also usually more noticeable on longer focal lengths as there's typically more camera shake with them.
Love the new phone, do you know if it's possible to record at 4k 120fps on the s23 Ultra?
I think you can only do 4k 60 or 1080 240.
does pro mode’s color much more natural than normal mode?
Pls help I am getting purple ring issue in pro mode iso under 320 lens ring visible night time
Regarding spot metering, i understand the different modes, but what does it exactly change? Like what setting does it affect?
It affects the entire exposure. By placing it on spot metering, whatever you have the spot on will be prioritized for "proper" exposure, and the rest will likely be greatly over-exposed. This is good for small, backlit subjects, but will likely blow the rest of the image out, or at least overexpose it more than you might want.
@@BrentHall I apologized, I just rewatched the video and noticed that the EV changed between the 3 modes. So it's the EV that changes which should help expose the picture correctly according to the desired metering mode?
Please tell me the tripod model
Bravo.. You are a professional there are simply no words. Good afternoon, I am also a photographer. Say please? Which is better for photos and videos: SONY XPERIA PRO-I, SONY XPERIA 1V or S 23 ultra, your advice please, which one should I take? I'm really looking forward to your response. Thank you very much in advance.
I've never used either of those Sony models so I have no idea how they compare to the S23 Ultra.
@@BrentHall Thank you very much!
I don't understand how you got that waterfall long exposure pictures without ND filters in a day light, Can you please elaborate?
I definitely used ND filters for those waterfall shots.
Can I manually focus the 10x zoom camera without a third party app? I want to add a 2x clip on moment lens to the 10x telephoto camera and will have to refocus the image. Thanks
Yes you can.
@@BrentHall Thank you!
@jeffreydouglas351 sure thing man, good luck with it! 😁
Doesn't expert raw allow you to edit photos more than pro mode after taking the photo?
Theoretically, yes, as it supposedly does offer a fractional increase in bit-depth, but in my experience there's no perceptible editing difference between expert raw images and regular pro mode raw images, in fact, I rather prefer and recommend pro mode over expert raw these because of the issues Samsung has created by wrapping their expert raw dng files up in a jpeg exterior. It has ruined expert raw for me and as of right now, pro mode is much better. I made a whole other video about it too, if you want to know more specifics about it. kzhead.info/sun/h7KNacucql-llHk/bejne.html&ab_channel=BrentHall
Amazing. I'm going to devour your content. The ISO video is next!
Many thanks!
Is there any hack to use Pro Mode as default when smartphone is locked? Currently it's only possible in Auto Mode.
Do you think it is worth upgrading from the S22 Ultra or should i just wait for next year's S24 U?
I'd recommend it because there are things that make it worth the your S22 U can get you a good trade-in offer. Battery life improvement, performance is much better, cameras get some upgrades, some useful features, and the overall experience is great. The S24 series are supposed to come with Exynos 2400, so if you're not a fan of Exynos, this is something to think about. I'd upgrade if you can get a good price. You can't go wrong with any S23 model. They all are such strong phones and suit the tasks that the average person will want done. Hope this helps! I have an A13 and am upgrading to an S23 model in the summertime as well!
No it’s not worth it S24 will be worth for ur s22 u The longer u wait the bigger the difference will be
Everybody's different, and everyone's got their own opinions based on their own experiences, budgets, and lifestyles, you know? As for me personally, I wouldn't have upgraded if it weren't for needing to make videos about it for this channel. For me, it wasn't worth the extra money, and while there are plenty of moderate upgraded features, they aren't enough for me to really notice or care in my everyday use, and certainly not for my mobile photography, but again, that's just my own use case and experience. I'll be paying off this S23 Ultra for another 3 years now, and for me, that really sucks.
Three years??? Let me guess, Verizon? My mother just found out a couple of weeks ago that her phone plan was for three years on her S22 that she got last year which is already giving her problems. She didn’t even know.
The battery improvement is massive. I'd recommend upgrading just for that honestly but that's just my opinion.
I just bought my s23u last week im kinda bit dissapointed with camera quality but i wish this video helps me
I feel you man, if it wasn't for this KZhead channel, I wouldn't have upgraded from my S22 Ultra. I was totally fine with that. Thanks for watching though, I appreciate it!
I just tried to upload a photo taken with my 22s to Dreamstime. They require a minimum of 3200 pixels, which the 22s lacks. Open Cmera delivers 4000 pixels. Most stock photo houses require 3200. I guess I will be stuck using the 4k pro video
it over proces photos even in pro mode.... can i turn it of? Video is over sharpen ... 🤔
Does it shoot 4k 50/60fps log video with native app?
4k 60 yes, log, no.
Why is the file size smaller in pro mode then in photo.? I was getting a sharper photo in photo mode at 3x zoom as pro mode 3xzoom. Photo mode file size was 3.1mb and pro mode it was 1.3mb.
idk why your pro mode images are that small. Are you looking at the dngs or the jpegs from pro mode, because it puts out both if you have it set that way. My pro mode dngs are all 30-40mb. Also, pro mode images always appear softer than the same jpeg because the phone edits the image and adds things like saturation, contrast, and sharpening, all of which add perceived sharpness to an image, and pro mode dngs are just the raw files with no in-camera editing or compression. So you'll have to do a bit of editing work to make them look better.
Tremendo review y sinceridad brutal. Estoy en el iphone desde el primer iphone y ya es suficiente con las mediocridades a hace Apple...s23 ultra es el camino
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it, and I hope you enjoy the phone!
20:4 phone fin❤
Everytime I shoot in landscape mode I got these awful two black spaces at the top and bottom of the screen. Almost bordering the shot. I've tried ti figure out why for Teo days and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it
Sounds like you're either in full screen or 16:9 ratio. Try setting it to 4:3, which is actually the highest resolution because it's the actual sensor dimensions. everything else just crops in on the 4:3 image.
Is the pro mode better than the expert raw?
I personally prefer the pro mode over the expert raw.
@@BrentHall I recently came across a discussion explaining that a DNG photo from the expert raw app is actually a computational combination of JPEG files that are then put inside a DNG container, and that this is the reason why Lightroom AI de-noise doesn't work on the expert raw DNG. I've started to use the pro mode more often and I seem to be happier with the results after editing.
@michaelklym7043 yeah, it's a bummer. I actually just mage a video about it a few days ago.
Which is better in ur opinion, expert raw or pro mode?
Personally, unless I want to use the astro mode in expert raw, I just use pro mode. The expert raw mode is a bit slower with the shutter lag, and though it does give a little more in terms of bit depth, I find it's not really noticeable over the raw images from pro mode.
@@BrentHall I tried both modes for the same scene and found the expert raw dng to have more saturated colours and better noise suppression compared to the raw dng. But the shutter lag you mentioned is quite evident in expert raw.
What do you think about the change that Samsung now puts a jpg in the dng container instead of a real raw?
I dislike it...a lot.
@@BrentHall Anything we can do about it? Direct the medias attention? Also ExpertRAW seems to be a complete scam according to a thread in Adobe Communities / Camera RAW section, the content of the dng files shows heavy color banding and looks worse than the embedded preview.
@donnawetter1513 yeah, I made a video about it a while ago. It didn't get much attention. It's definitely a shame about expert raw mode now. Though they did recently add electronic nd filters to it and I made a video about that too. So far I like them. My biggest issue with expert raw is so the astro and low light stuff.
@@BrentHall At least ProMode is still trying, ExpertRAW outputs nothing useable.
@@BrentHall I just did a test with my S24U, ProMode: the accompanying jpg has more highlight recovery then the actual dng, it became a complete fake.
I always used Pro Mode on my S22 Ultra. But the raw files on the S23 Ultra are so bad... There is so much color noise which I can't fix with Lightroom mobile. Is there anything I can do about it?
I've had good luck with the new Lightroom and camera raw update for the AI noise feature. It does an incredible job with both luminance and color noise.
can you take beautiful pictures of water without an ND filter only by lowering the iso?
If you're trying to get smooth water shots, then you need a slow shutter speed, and usually the lowest iso you can get. To do that during the day when it's bright, you'll have to have an nd filter. If you don't want to have to use an nd filter then you can still do it, but you'll have to wait until it's darker outside so there's not so much ambient light.
@@BrentHall I thought it was already possible to do this with artificial intelligence or "filters"
@@dmitryche8905 There is a new multiple exposure mode in the expert raw app that tries to do it, but it's not very good. I made a whole video about it. The nd filters did a much better job.
@@BrentHall thank you very much. I didn’t mean not only playing with exposure and iso, but photo stacking or blending.
I'm struggling to get the sky in focus with beautiful clouds?
If you're in pro mode, try putting the focus to auto, and if it doesn't focus right then you can tap on the screen where you want it to focus. It's much easier than trying to use the manual focus.
The S23 Ultra is a legend😃 with all these settings to play around with and people still say that iPhones are better 😥😥😥
One note: For over/Under exposure i do not use the EV, i use the Histogram.
The histogram is definitely superior!
Can Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra deliver DSLR quality?
Imagine if you have smartphone with bigger censor and better lenses....like mi 13ultra.....could be any difference
This is the main reason why I’m thinking about switching from iPhone. You have to buy something like Filmic Pro to gain access to have full control. Really annoying
I hate the fact that i cant change both EV and Shutter speed both at the same time
Let me just restate that everything about this phone truly blows me away. Sorry Spock your puny tricorder sucks.
😂Telephoto lens is not for landscape shots. The telephoto lens is an amazing lens when you use it for what it's designed for. 🤦
That's pretty subjective. My personal favorites for landscapes with the phone are usually the 3x and 10x lenses.
HOW THE HELL CAN I GET RID OF THE YELLOW TENT FROM MY FRONT FACING PRO VIDEO? SORRY FOR ALL CAPS!!!
