Hey guys it’s Greg with Apple Explained. Today I want to talk about Samsung. They tend to be the topic of my rants during live streams, which happen every Saturday at 8PM eastern time, by the way. But it’s for a good reason. Samsung takes a much different approach to their products than Apple, which leads them to include really gimmicky features in their products that typically don’t improve the user experience. So in this video I’m going to give examples of these gimmicks, and explain why Samsung loves including them.
Thanks to NordVPN for sponsoring this video!
Like Steve Jobs said in 1997, "It's not about the features, it's about the benefits. We start from the user experience and then work backwards from there."
Yeah, like taking away the headphone jack, forcing people to use the awful iTunes to simple move files to their phones, telling everyone that nobody wants a phone with a large screen until public demand forces them too, making external storage a pain to use & making people jump through hoops just to change thing's like their ringtone or customised wallpaper. They are the most anti consumer company in history.
@Maanav Khurana Samsung innovate, just look at the galaxy fold. Apple just steal everything and call it something different and then claim it's new. It's pathetic. I hear you actually have file managers and split screen apps on iPhones now haha years after android as usual 🤣🤣🤣

To summarize: Apple: Focuses one feature that is usually reliable. Samsung: Develops a plethora of features that are hits and misses.
Apple copies other companies that actually experiment
@@ES-pq8ru And then release a more appealing product with better implemented features which then pushes other companies to copy Apple
tech station Apple is pretty much never first to do something but that’s why the products are so good, they spend time curating and making the features almost perfect. Most of the time when a competitor to Apple does something first they immediately release it and a lot of the time it isn’t reliable and has errors that users are stuck with forever. Apple has trial and error that the team faces until they get it right. Only then is when they release it to the public and many times it works great. That’s why Apple “copies” ideas.
And apple copy widget on ios 14 that already have on android long ago
Apple does the BEST VERSION of many things first.
The in display finger print sensor was actually a gimmick that turned out to be useful. Even apple wanted that technology but failed to have it up to apples standards so they quickly went to face ID which isn't bad I guess.
“Quickly went to Face ID”, you do know it takes many years to develop this kind of technology right? Apple spends a lot more time coming up with the next release. Even when they released the current version , they are already working on iPhones at least 2 generations later…..
Well in display fingerprint is definitely less convenient, fast and less secure biometric method nevertheless.
@@azrafsami says you. It is a convinient way of selling Apple Watches, especially nowadays. In ALL Asian countries, face masks are worn when people catch cold or flu. Immediately, FaceID becomes a huge issue. Further, my FaceID is rendered useless as it is unlocked when my sister picks up. And this happened to multiple people from the past. I can even unlock my mother's phone. So saying FaceID is secured than fingerprint sensor, really does not make much sense to me.

Honestly, I like how Samsung tries to include unique features in their products. Smartphones have grown incredibly stale over the years, and I don't think there are very many people who would disagree with that, but Samsung are willing to try to differentiate themselves from the thousands of other Android devices, even if they don't always benefit the user as much as they make it seem. The Galaxy Fold definitely had it's flaws, but it was different, it was interesting, which is far more than I can say for most of today's smartphones. They may just be marketing gimmicks, however, they actually make me interested in their products as it's a completely different experience compared to any other device.
And yet those gimmicky features are always left in the cold in a short period of time because they hardly serve any purpose but for you to play with your shiny new 1200$ phone like a toy with those gimmicks disguised as "technologically innovative" stuff, and after then people would start using Samsung just like how others use other devices from different brands that are not Samsung. So much for a different experience... Trying to be different and quirky won't always do the trick, neither is more is actually more. In fact, less is more :)
liliumstargazerkhrys Ludvig Mies van der Rohe
EXACTLYY. I have no clue how having more features in a phone is a bad thing lmao.
@@username2009 I could care less if they are gimmicky or don't work!! @@LastStopGaming honestly for most people, most people want a phone that looks good, feels good & easy to use with great performance and clean UI. how much do you want phones to look different? most people care about aesthetic differences between between phones, but they rarely focus on things under the hood.
I used to be a Samsung user, but paying $700+ for a phone that barely receives 2 years of support has become ridiculous to me. I have switched to an iPhone, and I am happy with my choice. My iPhone 11 has consistently been updated with the latest iOS features available, and I will have five years of support on my device. Definitely a plus.

Yeah, but I think it was left out on purpose due to the phone's infamous battery fiasco: the Galaxy Note 7's batteries caught fire or exploded really easily, and Samsung ended production of his phablet because of that.
although i agree with you, u gotta admit that half of apple "new" features come from these gimmicks. it part of innovation and seeing what hits and what misses. apple sees what hits and adapts it after few years with a new name. user wise apple wins all the way, new featuristic innovations/ gimmicks smasung wins
I agree
exactly!
totally agree he is not being very objective in my opinion, because some people might also like the small and useless gimicks which are still fun to explore for some of us, although apple wins user friendly wise
They don’t just give it a new name. They try their best to perfect it. Look at Face ID. I swear I knew someone in 2013 with a Samsung phone with Face ID like unlocking feature, but it was terrible just like everyone else’s adaptation of Face ID. Most companies rush the feature and it blows up in their own face. Apple takes its time and waits, spends more money on proper research
When a new technology is available, Apple takes the time before integrating it into these new devices, in the end, all the integrated functionalities have served to contribute to the user experience (Silence button, Touch ID, 3D Touch (even s 'it has been replaced to make room in the iPhone), Face ID, OLED screen, etc. When you look at the past of old iPhones you say to yourself: "yes this technology makes sense for this time" When you see Samsung: Projector in smartphone, smart scrolling, x100 lens, seriously, who uses that? 0.000000001% of the world's population

Apple isn’t immune to gimmicks. The notable exception to Apple’s unspoken no gimmick policy is one reason I haven’t upgraded my MacBook Pro yet. I can explain it in two words: Touch Bar.
Touch bar was an still is working but not many people used its features. As a music producer I am sad that the new MBPs don't have it anymore, playback buttons in DAWs were very useful
@ nope. Touchbar is definition of the gimmick feature. It looked totally great when showcased but was totally pain to use in the real world. I had MacBook with this abomination and I'm so happy I upgraded to the latest MacBook with physical buttons again.
@@EvzenEmanuel I have worked with touchbar MBPs since their release. I have a different opinion than you have. Apparently. Have you used Logic Pro professionally?
@ oh imagine if your computer had a touchscreen, which is many times more useful then a touchbar and would preserve your keyboard from an abomination, if only they could implement such a thing...
@@heroninja1125 It is almost impossible to touch menu items with any finger on any DAWs unless you are able to work with a 1024x768 resolution. Starting from the galaxy s4 I bought every single S up to the s20, and I have to say I'm pretty satisfied with my s20 ultra. Yes it cost me 1400€, yes I could have got the standard s20, yes the 100x zoom may be a gimmick. But let's be honest, 2020 was full of gimmick focused smartphones. And the stupid high price for the s20 ultra is because of the chip it uses, which included a 5G----(I forgot how the component is called but most of you know what I mean). So that's the reason why almost any flagship was considerably more expensive than the previous generations, yet the iPhone 11 pro Max didn't have 5G but it was still priced to over 1300€ . Try to explain that. And to be honest, with every year samsung made better and better S models, but that does not mean they are perfect. The s8 was indeed a disaster, that's why until the s9 was launched (great phone btw) I used a iPhone 7. But right now it's more like a matter of preference instead of performance and utility. You either like samsung or you like apple. Very simple. I simply don't agree with the prices apple changes you for a phone that does a lot of things very good but is in some departments like 1 or 2 years behind.
I love both samsung and iphone. Personally for my tastes samsung is better. Even though I like samsung more, there have been times where I just wanted to switch to iphone for a change. What keeps me from that is the INSANE CRAZY GOOD trade in values. If you get an ultra phone and trade it in the next year, you can have the brand new ultra for literally about 200 dollars. Fucking insane. It LOCKS me into samsung. If they ever stop, then I'll try iphone for a bit. But honestly I think I'd miss my samsung phones.
@@hobosnake1 Im pretty sure you can do that with apple too, but it has to be carrier bought. Other than that, yeah Samsung has good value.
Hey guys, this is apple from greg explained.
Apple should create a channel like that, I support
The fingerprint scanner on the S8 was actually great once you got used to it (which only takes like a day or two). Simply tapping the back of my phone to unlock it is something I'll greatly miss now that we have in screen fingerprint scanners
I could never get used to it on my s8+. Actually, to me the pöacement wasnt that much of a problem, but it used to be just really unreliable. It worked well for maybe up to a week and then it always got really bad, and remaking the fingerprint used to help, but after doing that like ten times or so i just kept using the pass code. Actually a lenovo phone i had before which only cost like 150€ was immensely better and had its scanner on the back as well. So glad i switched to iphone tho!!!!
I could never get used to it. I like Face ID because I just pick my phone and use it. No need to find the finger print scanner on the screen or behind the phone.
Why you miss it? Isn't it more convenient to have it in the front of the phone?
Hell, I'll gladly take this over the ones found in the Pixel 6/6Pro and 7/7Pro. At least that one was much, much more reliable
Writing on a S8 right now and the past 5 years have been a hell with carefully placing my as clean as possible finger on the back hoping it would read. Sometimes it works but 40% of the time I've had to pray my face unlock actually works for once as I wait to unlock my phone. Both unlocks are honestly not good. Got iPhone now and it's insane how fast and reliable faceID is, I never have to worry about it and I notice not having to wait now all the time. I liked the idea with the S8 but especially if your finger was wet (could even be because of sweat) it was impossible so I ended up unlocking with pass instead
I remember seeing the galaxy s8 advert and asking: but does the eye scanner actually work?
I have a s8 since launch and now it’s my backup phone. I don’t even know if it works. Never tried it 😬

I also like that I can install any APK app I want, and entirely skip the Google Store if I so wish. I don't use the Samsung keyboard, home screen, Bigxby you have this freedom with Android.
I have a Samsung for these exact reasons lol and personally I like the bigger screens that most samsungs have, I dont get why people create these arguments saying one is better than the other, when they are both down to personal preference
Every user is free to choose what phone they want to have. For example exactly 1 year ago I bought myself the Huawei P30 Pro, which has the google apps since the phone was released in March 26, 2019, way before the fight between Huawei and Google broke out. I bought the phone on June 10, 2020, and have used it ever since as my daily phone. After 2 weeks when I bought the phone I received my Android 10 update for the phone and that was all, from that point on when I received that update for the phone, that was it, no more Android updates, only security updates and patches. This isn't ok if you think twice about it. Remember, I bought the phone after 1 year of it's release, and got just one update for the phone. It's not ok. Apple still hands out OS updates even to their iPhone 6, that got released on September 19, 2014, it is almost 7 years old and the phone still gets OS updates. On the other hand if you are lucky enough on Android you may get 2 years of OS updates. I didn't even got 2, I only got 1 year, and it that year it was only 1 major system update. Then many many months later, Android 11 was released, now Android 12 is released as Beta, and here I am, on a 2 years old phone stuck on Android 10. So this is why on my next phone I will stick with iPhone, since they care more about their users rather than their sales.

I think Android smartphone manufactures are always make decisions based on "marketing" over design or UX perspective. One example, they always make non-equal phone bezels, with a big "chin", that makes the phone looks not as good as iPhone, but they can proudly say something like "the bezel on our phone(the thinest, usually those vertical ones) is much thiner than iPhone!" and use this as a small sell point --- super thin bezel.
The iPhone 4 employed a stylish stainless-steel frame that wrapped around the device and housed the phone's antennas -- and when gripped just right (or just wrong, as the case may be) reduced the phone's signal strength when it shipped that June. 시민 It's "glass" because it contains like a certain level of glass. But when you say something is made out of glass, people expect it to be glass on a practical level and not just as a technicality. And the plastic layer on top makes it practically like plastic.
Dennis Löfgren Exactly, so even if they did NOT lie about it being glass then it was still misleading because they should’ve put out there that it was a very very thin layer and protected with plastic.
"iPhone is smooth" (60 hz🥴) Samsung s20 (120hz) *laughingin the background*
the OS isn't that smooth, it may be better now. But android used to have laggy trash OS.
@@jeff7210 yea "it used to have" but not anymore
The thing is that the gestures and animations on Samsung's devices aren't as refined as Apple's. iPhones have a way of feeling smoother than 60Hz.
@@jeff7210 ya it used to from 2010-2016, after that it improved alot

The only gimmicky feature that Samsung would constantly have is the stylus...I hope
Once you use a Galaxy Note phone, it's hard to use anything else. That S-Pen is my bread and butter. Using the S-Pen is like a mouse and keyboard.
I wouldn’t consider the stylus as gimmick.. there are many more to consider before that
I mean, thats probably the best signature feature samsung has done with their phone, no other companies have done the same, and apple wouldnt do the same with their iphone coz steve jobs disregarded that
The S-Pen is more of a niche feature than a gimmick. For some it enhances the whole experience of using the phone and they use it every day. Most people however just don't care for it though.
S pen is the only thing I miss about using a Samsung
I love samsung because over the past 3 years, about every month I found cool features that they added
i use the iris scanner on my note 9 and its blasing fast and reliable.still better than any other biometrics for me.at par if not better than touch id.
I don't even know what GIMMICY is
I bought my first iPhone, the 11PM,2 weeks ago. I've been using Samsung phones since 2011 and Galaxy Notes since 2014. You've said quite a lot I agree with. Though I still like and use Air View on my Note 10 Plus. The Note 9 was their first phone I had that every feature worked as advertised. Then Air Actions/Gestures came out with the Note 10 Plus. I used it for a whole 5 minutes ☹️. I don't think the iPhone 12 Pro Max is worth my waiting for and am pleased with the iPhone 11 Pro Max. My only grouses are the lack of a regular back button and the layout in SETTINGS. I plan to keep buying iPhone Pro Max and Galaxy Note phones. I carry 2 phones daily and want to experience both iOS, Android and the S Pen.
Wow. It’s November 2022 and I’m still using both phones. Absolutely no regrets about not waiting for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I’ll be upgrading from the Note 10 Plus to the S23 Ultra next year and I’ll use my iPhone 11 Pro Max until the iPhone 15 Pro Max comes out. I’ve enjoyed using BOTH phones greatly. 4 months after buying my first iPhone I bought my first Apple Watch. The Apple Watch 6 and it’s been my only watch ever since.
Air view is basically reverse force touch
The facial recognition on the Galaxy S10 had the same issue where you can use a photo to unlock, Unbox Therapy tried it by using an old video and it worked
Then don't use it.
Big Jill I don’t own one and I switched to iPhone from Galaxy A20
Maanav Khurana a used 256GB iPhone X, cost me $700 AUD accessories included
As a Samsung user, I agree with you. Apple is objectively better in a lot of ways but I like Samsung phones because of the OS, layout in Google integration. But if you were saying which one is better I would have to give it to Apple for most people, especially because of their support for older phones
I actually had the samsung s8 and i loved its fingerprint scanner worked everytime . Unlike the note 20 and s22+ , when you put screenprotector it stops working
This man really just said that Smasung prioritizes sales over customer experience, but he represents Apple.😐
Where is the lie?
@@Wizza2418 You have to have common sense to find it
@Gooch destroyer eh he kind of is. Especially with their new Air Pods max. Like bruh ur selling mid headphones for $500. are you serious? I could buy some XM4s for half that and they sound 10x better
Yes, Samsung has made many fails, but sometimes they do something's right and different from other companies. First of all, their screens are the best in the business. Second, remember when the Note 1 came out ? Everyone said that it was a joke and now the Note is the king of Android flagships. I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Samsung, especially with their One UI, but you have to admit that sometimes they can produce really interesting things. I think the Fold and the Z Flip are really fun devices.
Apple: Lets sell a boring and perfect phone Samsung: Lets sell a prototype and charge it $1400
@Allan Cameron i meant in terms of looks. I personally love how good the iphone works but in terms of its looks it cud be a bit boring. I also realised iphones are wayyy better once i switched to s10 which is the worst fone ever.
@Allan Cameron and also the apps are a million times better on ios. A cheap apple device can surpass the most expensive samsung
I use the iris scanner on my S9 every day. Sometimes it is a bit slow, but that's because I don't wipe off fingerprints and it smudges over the sensors. The fingerprint on the back is scratched and doesn't work as accurately anymore because it leaves fingerprint smudges behind it which confuses it. Of course 2D recognition isnt as secure, however I'm not worried that someone will just have that random equipment available to fool my own iris.
The chance someone gets your phone, goes through all the work to fool your iris sensor, then unlock it is verrrryyy unlikely lol. don't worry about it. If you are truly worried about it just use the fingerprint scanner. this guy has no clue what hes talking about lol
Although I am also disappointed that Samsung took away the Iris Scanner and didn't make any good replacement to it and just settled with an Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor which for me is not very fast but atleast more secured in comparison with optical based ones. I also hate that they're pretending that Iris Scanner never happened. And also Greg, it's with the Note7 that Iris Scanner had launched first not the S8. I hope that enlightened you up. Thanks and stay safe! 🙂
Why you got 4 homepods in one room lmao
A surround sound setup
I got a Samsung ad before this
Hey, can you make a Video about the history of Logic (Pro) although it wasn’t from apple at the begining ? I would love to see this.
The segue into the ad was smoother than a 240Hz gaming monitor!
Yeah, you're not wrong. But you forgot about the king of all gimmicks from Samsung, the curved edge display witch they believed for so long that users wanted. Most Samsung users I know disabled the edge touch feature. It wasn't until Galaxy S20 that they realised that the edge thing was annoying and removed it. I remember the rumors that Apple was going to add this to the iPhone, which of course never happened.
I like the edge. Pretty useful if you just wanna swipe over and check the weather.. or check your calendar, whatever you would need to check quick.
As a Samsung user, I can say the gimmicks are really unnecessary and mostly pointless just so they can advertise those "features", and all it does is increase the price. Probably will switch to the iPhone 12 or 12s/13 soon.
Watching this on my 2 year old S8+ (exynos). I use it mostly on social media, watching KZhead videos and Netflix. Some games like Mobile Legends and COD Mobile and they load faster than anyone in the game. I don't see that it has slowed down but I can tell you that its battery drains so fast now. I use Iris Scanner to unlock my phone everytime. I can use it even with my glasses on. The only thing that I want with it is to be updated to future versions of Android but that is impossible since it is supported only until Android 9. I'll see if I can afford to switch to iPhone this year.
Trust me.. DON'T SWITCH TO APPLE. They lock you in and it's so dumb. you are pretty much forced to get rid of everything and do apple everything. Samsung is good.. save up for more recent ones, you will be happy just like I am with my note 10+. You can even switch to other brands of android, the choice is yours, just don't switch to apple.
I love it how the most replayed timestamp is once Greg is finished talking about the sponsor
5g, 120, multiple camera lenses, high screen to body ratio, amoled display, under screen fingerprint scanner, big batteries, and plenty of power. Sure samsung has useless stuff time to time but atleast they try to innovate unlike Apple who sit back and wait 5 years to implement the simplest changes. The standard iPhone finally got oled displays and 5g. Not to mention iPhone doesn't even have 120 fps yet. But ig the sheep will wait for them to "innovate" that too huh ?😂
Not only that it took apple ages to add worse widgets
@@insanitylol is not that, you don't know about technology
Apple doesnt sit back at all. They dont implement simple changes. They take longer to perfect something and then bring it out, instead of slamming out bad stuff too early. I prefer quality over quantity 1000%
Without samsung and other companies expirementing with new concepts. We wouldn't be in smartphones today where we are today. If every company took the apple approach we would still be stuck in 2015 worth of smartphone tech. Double tap to wake: LG (2013) Dual cameras: LG (2017) Biometric scanning outside of fingerprint: Samsung (iris scanner galaxy note 7 in 2016) Water resistance and dust resistance: Samsung (2014) Folding phones: Samsung (2019) Stero Speakers: HTC (2013) Wireless Charging: Samsung (2015) Point being is all these are examples of experimental features that nowadays are the norm on literally all flagship phones and not one of them is an Apple made feature. Apple doesn't experiment and hence we have had other companies do that and the only reason we have the features we have today is because of those companies trying these new things
Meanwhile Apple: introduces Animoji
I wasn't looking at my phone and didn't even realise he transitioned to the sponsorship, damn
I really don't ever plan to return to apple. I stopped at the iPhone 6S+ and switched in 2020 to the Samsung A80 which is a godsend compared to what I've used prior. Even when I've briefly used more modern apple phones and tablets, I just prefer Androids interface and freedom. The only thing I miss from Apple is the interoperability between apple products.
Hey Greg, I watched this video and was absolutely floored - in a good way. I switched from the Galaxy S9 to an iPhone 11 Pro Max and now after seeing the other side of thing this video is absolutely fantastic and well thought out
You should’ve also mentioned the back to back pressing phones together for NFC file transfer that they made fun of the iPhone 5s for not having.
All Samsung S, Note and Z still have it, they just stopped flaunting.
Seeing the video's title with the thumbnail felt relieving, especially that I have an s8 and I never use the eye scanner feature, instead I use the too slow fingerprint reader
Looks like you’ve been workin out 👀

I agree with everything you said, but I also believe that taking some risks isn’t bad, because as an example. If Samsung wouldn’t have put all those features since the beginning, they wouldn’t have ever known if the features were good or bad, I think that every tech company has to take some risks. Not just thinking if it’s something that people might like or not, but at the same time bring something fresh, at the end, is the costumer who decides to use those features or not, I had the galaxy s4, s6 and s8, before I moved to Apple environment, and I enjoyed all the features. I also believed that even though weren’t that good as a final result due were kinda ahead of time , they weren’t the worst. With some fixes in upcoming products would have been way better, my point is that every tech company should taste what they liked to introduced as a new feature, and do it, if don’t. They would have never known.
When he said explained a notification in my subscription said next gen console storage explained
Samsung’s adding those features so the Samsung fans can say: 'welcome in 20xx' to apple fans lol
2:52 no. It was on the Galaxy Note7
Sorry but Iris scanner? my favourite and it was introduced on the note7
Been using Samsung since the S3 and I really miss the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone from the S8. Seemed a little weird at first, but once I got used to it I could pull my phone out of my pocket and unlock it almost instantly. I got muscle memory very quickly for where the fingerprint reader was and it would unlock way faster and more realiably than the in the screen fingerprint reader and I didn't have to be looking at it like with facial recognition.
Yeah this is true but apple phones getting slow and stuff makes this point redundant. I would anyday choose an Android one just for the reliability lol
watching on my tab a 8.0 w/ spen
i got a samsung galaxy z flip ad on this vid lmao
Air view argument can also be applied to 3D Touch Authorized it worked more consistently
S6 Edge: Uncomfortably flat back S7 Edge: Fixed! S8: Bizzare fp sensor position S9: Fixed S10: unreachabely high power button *Bonus* Note 10: Power button moved to the left 🤷♂️ S20: Fixed... . We're just BETA testers for them
Lol now predict the future phones, and you will be the most reliable source on which Samsung phones people should buy.
Vendash Chauhan that's called product development. Samsung realized there was a problem and fixed it. Would you rather everything stays the same

Congratulations on your decision, I use both iOS and Android. But I just can't seem to get myself to prefer android, I just love the pure speedy optimization on iOS. Even an iPhone 6s beats most new budget android phones in real-world pefomance, and that thing only has a dual core processor and 2GB of ram
Anthony what a waste
Guys c'mon he literally doesn't have an S20
Your voice is so clear! Like it!
iras scanner was the most secured option and I used both but Face ID is more convenient to use in harsh sunlight in countries like India where I belonged and I love projector in phones its so convenient for many people but yeah its add lot of cost. Rest features are kinda gimmick.
