    • They make it a point to state that they would never actually put themselves in danger and that anyone that says they are doing so is making the audience complicit in anything that could go wrong and that is not fair. We know it's a trick. That's why they make sure to show him getting out of the tank for the benefit of the TV audience - watch closely and you can see his hand moving still, and up close the "gag" part of this is more obvious. He has air inside of the mask itself, so when he spins around and the card's been handed off and he's slipped it inside the mask, there's some water that makes it in.

  • Fun fact about this performance: usually Teller does not get out of the tank at the end. Apparently, the producers of SNL were rather insistent that Teller get out of the tank on the air, but after Penn and Teller pushed back on that idea, they settled on not pulling Teller out. However, during the performance, something went wrong with Teller's oxygen supply, and for a significant portion of the trick he actually WAS holding his breath. He gave the crew his signal to get him out and that's why we see Teller get out of the tank at the end of the trick. This was the first performance of this trick live, and so they've of course perfected it since then to prevent that from happening, including making the selected card signed. This is definitely one of my favourite Penn and Teller tricks, for sure.

    • Actually he didn't signal the crew, Lorne Michaels insisted on Teller getting out at the end, to show everyone he didn't die. P&T were not happy about it, but later Teller was thanking Lorne for making them wimp out. (Teller told this story in their book "How To Play With Your Food.")

    • Fab piece of trivia, @Branden Sugden! You can see where the trick went wrong at 5:19 and 5:37. At 5:19, there is an evacuation of air from his goggles which I suspect accidentally let in water. At 5:37 you can see that his goggles are now half filled with water, which would prevent him from breathing properly.

  • I have heard that the original trick (as usually performed at the time in traveling shows) was for him to stay in there looking lifeless but Teller was in real danger of actually drowning and that's why you saw the crew jump into action to get him out of the tank and the crowd (and I'm sure the audience at home) cheered and I think it made the trick better in the end.

  • It's funny. They've shown us so much it's easy to spot Penn's moves. Left hand palms the card from his pocket to the top of the deck. False shuffles, card stays on top. He goes over to Teller for the hand off. Still brilliant and years ahead of everyone at the time.

Either way, he realised he was in danger, due to the water entering into the mask and him gesturing to the stage hand to get him out.
