It's called conservation, and that $50,000 goes to managing wildlife and the land. Botswana has 50,000 too many elephants for their carrying capacity and no other way to solve the issue. Having far too many of a species will destroy the land which in turn causes death and destruction for the remainder of the species living within it. People see the kill and say "no way, how could you do it to the elephant!" but never think about conservation and preservation of other species. There's a reason it's allowed, and then there's a reason they target poachers.

It actually helps the species. It's a way to keep the population down and the money goes towards conservation

Research the topic before commenting idiot. There are very few elephants killed legally each year. It is very controlled based on the population and how much the land can sustain. The funds that the hunters pay go into conservation and anti-poaching activities. Plus, the meat is used by local people.
