Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
The Shelby GT500 is a high-performance version of the Mustang coupe available in a single trim level. Essentially a track-ready, street-legal Mustang, it has many performance features not available on the standard-issue car.
When you're the top horse in the stable, expectations are high. And nothing short of world-beating performance is expected of the new Mustang Shelby GT500. Since Ford ended production of the previous-generation GT500, Dodge has normalized pony-car extremes with its Challenger Hellcat variations, and Chevrolet has set new records on the crucible of test tracks, Germany's Nürburgring, with its Camaro ZL1.
The Shelby GT500 appears well equipped to reassert itself as the top horse in the stable. Ford developed a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission specifically for this engine and fitted huge 16.5-inch-diameter front brake rotors clamped upon with six-piston calipers. The adaptive suspension can adjust to various modes, including settings for track-day heroics or drag-race showdowns.
Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye
There aren't a lot of vehicles we consider to be muscle cars. The 2019 Dodge Challenger, with its outlandish horsepower and classic styling, certainly qualifies. Muscle cars are also known for their lack of practicality, but the Challenger bucks that trend by making fewer sacrifices in everyday usability thanks to its large trunk and relatively spacious rear seats.
The new 797-hp SRT Hellcat Redeye is basically the retired Demon but with a slightly detuned V8 and less drag-race-specific hardware. There are also some changes in the supporting trims. All-wheel drive is now available on the base SXT, the Widebody treatment is offered on the R/T Scat Pack, and a new dual-snorkel hood increases the Hellcat output by 10 hp. Some trims also come with fewer standard features and corresponding price drops.
Even without these latest changes, the Challenger would have remained one of our favorite vehicles in any class. It doesn't have the corner-carving chops of the Camaro or the Mustang, and we're quite fine with that. Not many cars have this kind of sinister style or performance that won't break the bank or overtly compromise your daily drive.
The Challenger may not be as quick or as responsive as the Mustang or the Camaro, but it's always a hoot to drive. The Dodge's sheer size makes in-town maneuvering a bit tough (the wide-body fenders don't help), but the meaty tires and upgraded suspension aid handling and body roll.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro has been refreshed, with new fascias, front and rear lights, and some tweaks to trim-level equipment lists. But the only quality-of-life improvement is the upgrade to Chevy's newest and quickest infotainment system, the aptly named Chevrolet Infotainment 3. Nothing that makes the Camaro a tremendous performer and rewarding car to drive has changed, but nothing that makes it an unappealing choice for daily living has changed either.
Spend any time behind the wheel of a Camaro, and you'll quickly realize it's sharper and more purposeful than its American muscle-car rivals, especially when equipped with the 1LE package - an assortment of performance upgrades meant to improve handling, steering and braking. For 2019 models, Chevy has expanded the 1LE offering, making it available with all three engine options, including the turbocharged 2.0-liter.
In many ways, the Camaro feels like the odd man out in the American muscle-car trinity. The Dodge Challenger has stayed true to form and is basically a rolling couch you can equip with a 797-horsepower V8, while the Ford Mustang has turned into a solid all-arounder with broad appeal for coupe buyers. But the Camaro has become a true sports car with all the ups and downs that entails, essentially abandoning all the traditional muscle-car traits except high-output V8 engines.

That could be the case but prepped dragstrip isn't always there.....on normal conditions,stock tyres and on the street thee ZL1/1LE proves it wrong

I like to think he would be proud of this new mustang, even if it doesn’t have a manual he was always about going faster, and thats what the dual clutch does better than anything else.

v Gladi except a stick isnt faster than a dual clutch. You cannot shift that fast yourself. And if you’re trying to go fast you really dont even want a stick if you have 800hp, it gets to be to much for that kind of performance

The guy in the Mustang was taking a nap for about a good two seconds and still won.
That's the Mustang's launch control! There's a huge delay from the time you come off the brake pedal to the time you start accelerating. I complained about it back during the drive event last year.
@Carlos Lago it looked like the car rolled back slightly then took off. Have to wonder if it's a clitch in the launch control. Hopefully it's something they will fix.
@@CarlosLago yeah, there's a lag but it exists in launch to protect the DCT. It's a bummer cause that Shelby would be even more long gone without the lag.

I'm a mustang guy, but the sound of the supercharger on that hellcat sounds so damn good .
I also think the gt500 sounds great as well. Its bigger and makes higher boost then the hellcat supercharger. Ford has a history of loud superchargers in their cobras. Ive owned an 04 cobra and a 08 gt500. Both superchargers were loud and sounded great. I do like the way the exhaust sounds on the hellcat the best though.
It's all this high pitched whining that reminds me of the fact that the stock engine has no power and it's all supercharger.
There's literally no reason for the Hellcat to lose. I just dont think she's driving it properly 😂

@@1percent_jakes its too heavy, its 4500lbs. When you do the math the gt500 hp/wt ratio is like 5.2 while the hellcat is like 5.6 (the smaller the number the better). So if the hellcat wanted to have the same ratio it would need like 860hp.

The Shelby is hurting feelings out here. Guys cant stop trying to make excuses for the reason their favorite (probably can’t afford it) car lost.
They should Max out all three at top speed and see which car is really the fastest.....
Toto 1 I’m pretty sure the gt500 would still come out on top but top speed runs aren’t really that practical. And the challengers aero isn’t that great so highly doubt with that extra horsepower it would come around. Idk, the Shelby is nice. The 1LE package makes the Camaro slower in a drag also. But can’t lie it looks really nice. Considering it’s the cheapest one there it’s perfect. It’s high 60s low 70s and that’s 20+ thousand difference each way. That’s a lot of money for mods and that LT4 can handle the power you throw at it.
Even though I'm a Ford guy I'll still take them all. The zl1 for a daily, the chally as a drag car and the shelby as the weekend toy.

The ZL1 1LE is very harsh and would make a terrible daily, but it is excellent on a race track. The standard ZL1 would do great as a daily.

I would like to say before people says the gt500 is "better" then the other 2 in a dig race, Im going to start by mentioning straight off the bat these races were not even close to being fair... the all 3 cars had completely different tiers and the conditions were not ideal for a fair race, plus other things that wernt completely done in the correct way. in proper race reviews between these cars the camaro usually come out on top in a dig (but just barely tho), the regular ZL1 gaps the other 2 no problem but the 1LE just barely is in front. Its all got to do with the setup that your on of course! and one other thing the camaro ZL1-!LE is just as fast as the mustang around a track! (thats a true statement right there as well) for quite a bit cheaper! so its a no brainier to choose the camaro over the others for track racing! The camaro can do all of this with having the least amount of HP by a long shot! that alone is impressive!!! The mustang is great but it doesn't match up good enough to a ZL1-1LE when it comes to performance to price ratio... say all you want the camaro is a true trooper!

Negative. It wasn't the DCT. It was shear power-to-weight that won here. Simple as that. Full throttle upshifts in that 10spd auto are as fast as that Tremec 7spd DCT. Hell, GM's 8spd upshifts are as fast as the Porsche PDK. That DCT is much more responsive and better for the track tho. It's gear actuations are no faster tho.
And don't forget the 110 hp stronger

I haven't seen anyone mention this but the 1LE package on the Camaro made it slower than the standard ZL1. 1LE is strictly for cornering at a track.

DCT makes a big budge difference after 2 to 3 rd shifts. The big fat cat can’t get out of the whole on the street. A proper drag strip with for the Red eye will be better.

With dual clutch automated transmissions...theres no power loss or interruption of power in between shifts like there is with a torque converter automatic. 2 identical cars with the around the same power but 1 with a dual clutch and the other with a traditional automatic...the dual clutch will walk the other car.

Tremec developed the DCT. The rest is standard-type crankshafts popped into a 5.2 developed block, with the usual injection and cam stuff these days, delivered with a million miles of computer codes.
With a transmission GM helped develop yes haha

BMW engineers moved to KIA/Hyundai, so what's the big deal? haha 7 speed vs. 10 speed? With the mountains of torque the GT500 makes, having 3 less gears literally means NOTHING.

That weight is killing the hellcat man. I know dodge believes that if that car was roughly the same weight as these mustangs and camaros...there’d really be no competition. And if it’s lighter, it probably could take corners MUCH better. Hellcats and 392’s would be looking at corvettes for a challenge instead lol

Weight is just as important as power. That is how my 64hp car can still keep up with regular cars on a highway on ramp....it weighs very little.
It also costs $15-20k less than the other two. The Chevy wasn't meant for the drag anyways. We already know the Dodge will be garbage on corners. I wonder how the Chevy stacks against the GT500. Is the GT500 worth the extra $20k?

The trap speeds in the GT500 is much higher than both.
I don't think DCT's hold any advantage over torque converter auto's in a drag race...it's the responsiveness on tracks/backroads that makes them better.

I expected the gt500 to win but damn the guy with camaro was making the zl1 look good...down 100+ hp to both cars and still came in 2nd 🔥 the weight definitely played into it.

Brian Cronin Each car has a different launch control setup if they were to switch around the drivers that could potentially cause minor inconsistencies in their launches. Better for them to get a feel for each car and perfect their launches.

It’s such a great time to be a muscle car enthusiast. These cars keep one upping each other, and because of that they just keep getting better and better. There will never be one true king. At least for now this seems to be an endless cycle and I am not complaining one bit
