The Best of Debussy
Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 - 25 March 1918) was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.
Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897-1899) and Images (1905-1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his "symphonic sketches", La mer (1903-1905). His piano works include two books of Préludes and two of Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.
With early influences including Russian and far-eastern music, Debussy developed his own style of harmony and orchestral colouring, derided - and unsuccessfully resisted - by much of the musical establishment of the day. His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

The first time I heard music by Debussy I was 19 and a friend of mine was learning to play Clare de Lune... She could only play the first few bars but I had a very strong reaction to the music and went out of my way to discover more. I am 59 now and I have been playing the piano since I was about 30; I didn't have the opportunity until then, and I am mostly self-taught so my technique is unorthodox and my sight-reading is very poor. I wanted to play the piano even as a child but it wasn't possible. WHen I heard Clare de Lune I told myself I will play it one day. Last year I started to have lessons with a wonderful teacher and I told her my ambition is to play Clare de Lune, and she is helping me to get there. To be able to make this music myself is my dream. I can never tire of it.
Hey me too. Look at "piano secrets" KZhead channel, you will find a whole 1 hour video tuturial on how to play clair de lune! Good luck and good day.

It's funny how you would think that the human emotions of sadness and joy are polar opposites of eachother, while in reality they feel amazingly similar. Debussy's music made me realise this.
+Peter Timowreef This is a deep truth that only music seems to be capable of expressing. Music makes all of life seem whole and beautiful.
+Peter Timowreef see buddhism. joy and pain are 2 sides of same coin. peace is above them as it transcends desire. debussy is in a sense giving a glimpse into that
+Peter Timowreef Indeed. Love his music.. but often find myself in tears. At other times, uplifted. There's never a time when I can't drag myself out of the doldrums, if I listen to Golliwogs Cakewalk!
+Peter Timowreef watch inside out sometime, rly good movie and also has the message that sadness and joy are intertwined
Bram Nollet +Peter Timowreef But my tears are not ones of sadness. I don't know what they are.. I don't know why I am crying.. but grief, despair, sadness.. all those "known" emotions that normally trigger tears in everyday life... they simply don't apply. I wish someone could explain why I cry at such beauty.
Debussy is unlike other composers. Instead of being dramatic and going all out with an entire orchestra, most of his songs are hauntingly ethereal and beautiful - and produced by a single, lone piano. pure magic.
well he was a piano composer and you composers come from very different time periods and therefore influenced by many different things composers like Mozart, Bach or any big composers you may think of made music long before him and the expressive musical concepts that you hear in this hadn't been explored yet

+Aiodhan O'Connellan What is he considered then?
+JustAlberlos You may not, perhaps, be aware that Debussy came up during the 1870's, which makes him 19th Century-born. He didn't, however, receive recognition of any real consequence or reach his epitome of classical music notoriety until around 1905 [at the beginning of the 20th Century]. The point is, many of his pieces were composed 'before' the turn of the century. However, if we were back in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th Century's, I would double dare you to call Debussy an impressionist to his face! As for me, out of sheer respect for the man, I would choose not to call him such; or any other musical composer if one really understood what the term implies in a musical connotation. Hint: Milli Vanilli scandal. It's quite different, though, with painters [who impersonate on purpose].
+Jodie Christian What does it imply? Im curious.
+JustAlberlos He rejected the term "impressionnist" to characterise his music. He is of course not from the classical period. He was very modern in his compositions. Also, 19th century is the century of the romantics, not the classical composers (though debussy was born somewhere around 1870).
We all love Debussy.

DeusMaxxx You're right we just listen people who are not talented. Debussy, Mozart, Chopin... Not talented at all... I prefer listen people without any talent for music, actually I do not know what I am doing here... Idiot
DeusMaxxx actually i wasn't trying to stress how talented i am. I stated that i was 16 to show that there are still young people with an appreciation for this style of music. Most young people today do not and in my generation classical and Classical music is dying out. I was just saying that I'm keeping it alive. Sorry if you took that the wrong way. Pretend i'm old. There you happy :)
Dionne Larson thanks for defending me... but im a guy xD haha :)
heracles371 hahahahah xD
DeusMaxxx I care how old he is, because it shows diversity in age across the people who listen to music like this. Plus, "talent" is irrelevant to the comment you were responding to; learning a piece of music is less about natural abilities than diligence. Therefore, when DaunyeSynigal said that he had learnt a piece of music, there was no relevance to talent. (If you decide that learning a piece of music does indeed require talent, then you have just refuted your own argument. Either way, your comment makes little sense.)
Debussy's music doesn't make your soul suffer or long for something unachievable... unlike the music of Bach for example. I love Bach very much but in times of anxiety you just want to calm down. Debussy's melodies just flow through you without tearing you apart, they fill you with light and calmness.

Music of the very soul.I listen to this poetic piece and drift off to another world. Sublime, beautiful, soothing. I read Debussy's autobiography once, he suffered for his music. Arabesque No. 1 gives me life! I remember when I would listen to classical demos on my keyboard when I was younger (about five or six years ago...I'm 18), and this is one of the songs that hit me. I had to find the sheet music for it and learn it, though it was ahead of my piano level at the time. I had no private tutor, so despite the fact that I was a fast learner, I had to learn at the general speed of the class *sigh*. I'm thankful for that though, because a lot of what I know musically speaking is what I taught myself. I finally played this song at a recital at age 14 or 15. I then became more familiar with Debussy's works and realized that I love the way he communicates through his pieces. I realized that my style is quite similar to his. I guess the point of all this was to give a backstory, for those who may care, as to why exactly Arabesque No. 1 will always be near and dear to me.

Debussy has always known the key to my heart. It's like he is pure expression and emotion. He has truly given sound to unnamed emotions. Just genius.
His soul is interpreted through the breath of his music. What I experience in listening is completely spiritual as this is what I believe gifted his mastering style. What a faraway place he takes me to in listening, a place of simple beauty and peacefulness. I personally appreciate the solitude it leaves within me, especially in these stressful and unstable times we are in.
Concordo com vc.
His times were as stressful. He was a bit of a loner, his first woman apparently committed suicide, and he died of cancer in his 50s during the end of World War I. I would agree that his music was sublime. Take care.
This man had a vision. He saw something that none of us really could but lucky for us, he wrote down all he saw into the music so we could enjoy his vision too.

Look at him in the picture, acting like he didn't do anything great You know what you did Claude! Don't give me that face
From what I've read, I don't think Debussy was actually a good person.. Left his first wife (Rosalie Texier) so depressed she actually attempted to commit suicide. And while she was in the hospital, he didn't even visit her once or pay for any of her medical bills because by that point, he was interested in another woman (Emma Bardac). He ended up hating her too. Heard he was really irresponsible with money as well.
All the beautiful music comes from wife beaters and lecherous brutes.

Rêverie (16:46) is an incredibly underrated piece. The first time I heard it I didn't know what it was called but I instantly fell in love with it.
westworld
I always thought it was part of a Final Fantasy game soundtrack - really otherworldly
Before Zimmerman was a thing, I could see this being the ending of Inception or Interstellar.
@@atomiccritter6492 To be fair, that piece was played in Dink Smallwood, so there's that for the RPG aspect of the song
It gets played in a lot of Asian dramas and anime tbh.
This makes me want to hop on a bike and sail away, through the spring air! Or fly away to a far away place. The world seems beautiful and alive with this music
boy, i sure do love some of debussy
When I do my physics homework to this music, I feel like a badass mofo genius dude guy

I'm doing it right now lol adding vector analytically test tomorrow
Same, when i plan for world domination!

La musique de Debussy touche le plus de mon âme et de mon coeur.

Heard of Debussy from a friend, went to listen, figured out that this is a masterpiece.
Debussy is slowly but surely saving my life
Same.
Oh mine as well...
i feel the same
I've never been able to agree with a comment more
ok
He will always be my favourite, just fills my empty blank spaces inside...
Debussy’s music soothes my soul My love for Debussy‘s music is higher than the mountain and deeper than the sea Debussy is a great Alchemist of the piano
Amazing music, transports me back to my childhood. I was never particularly musically gifted, but my stepsister was learning to play the piano, hoped to play at the royal albert hall one day. And oh, how she did love Debussy. She'd spend hours trying to get her fingering right so she could help me enjoy debussy too. She'd throw performances for the whole family, sometimes my uncles would join in, but every time, they always finished on Debussy. Tragically, we lost her some years ago, after an accident with our washing machine. But every time time debussy gets turned on, I think of her...
Aaahh, Debussy... I love Debussy. Sometimes, the only thing I can think about is Debussy.
Max S What about Bach? Bach is good too. Just remember, always finish on Bach, never on Debussy.
I had forgotten how much I love to listen to classical music.
gotta check out ravel's piano works if you haven't yet
+Gideon Thank you, I sure will Gideon.
Thanks Gideon, I enjoyed Ravel's piano works very much.
Donna Bennett that's great to hear! :) their music is so intelligent yet emotional
I totally agree.
Cette musique est magnifique quel plaisir d'écouter de la vraie mélodie. Merci beaucoup
I love Debussy. Debussy is best. Please give more of Debussy
Someone in the comments said this music is boring... I think this music and classical music in general needs that those listening it to have a good dose of imagination, this kind of music promote thinking, images, emotions and these are not precooked-eaten-digested as in the contemporary pop music. Every few second the image changes as much as the thoughts and the emotions, and all together they make a long fantastic tale and the tale is your own only. While in contemporary music you get one concept (often given in words), one feeling, one emotion and it last almost always the same short time, no space for imagination, it tells you what to think and what to feel. You can just agree or not. Classical music is boring because you do not want get the hassle to think with your brain.
Some people will find sunsets boring.. not everybody has attraction for beauty apparently.
@@adamcarney1465 you got bad day is it? Just relax and listen 😘
No need to tear one thing down to build up another. All music is beautiful.
確かに。想像力が必要であり、また、想像力が豊かになりますね。(^O^)
What you said about music, images and emotions is basically clairaudience, undeveloped in most people but nonetheless the seed is there just waiting to grow.
He soothes the disturbed with his hypnotic yet genius musical talent, leaving the impression that there is safety within his music from the big and strange world we live in.
Debussy broadcasts "vibrations" of, indeed, "safety" by taking us through the barrier into The World of Natural Beauty, especially, the Real Beauty of the "The Not-yet Scientifically Explored Cosmos", and True Sensuousness, thus "rescuing" us from the abuse and dehumanization of "ugliness"---- the "outer face" of Negativity, Abolition of Progress, Dehumanization, Deep inner Cruelty!!
What a wonderful description you gave to his music. Right on target.

[ Cries in French ]
Johann Sebastian Bach I was born this way dude.. :(
The Lone Stone HAHAHA! Dude, Sssshhh.. Don't expose me, bro..
The Lone Stone But I already abandoned my destination... My past, my past (*starts crying*)... My past is just a fragment of my life... (*cries even more*)..
priceless
[Throws rocks for absolutely no reason in Spanish]
When I start to feel my anxiety creeping over my shoulders I some how find Debussy calming my inner hurt, anger, or hate.. Clair De Lune helps me the most.. Closing my eyes and drifting off to another land.. Closing my eyes I see each music note in a different color.. I'm starting to love and appreciate classical music a lot more now..
When you lose a loved one.. The composition takes you to different emotional places in your being where you are left feeling exposed, understood, and comforted all at once. Thank you for putting this together (without ads) xx
yooooo that debussy is vibin fr cant wait for deass
Some people critically call this elevator music. Just think, if quality music like this were played on elevators people would be exposed to it if even for a few moments. I believe it could make a difference in the entire human condition : )
I sincerely wish THIS was the elevator music...
esbaez YOU my friend are so right,..
Haha that's very stupid though. This is great music, but most people still don't appreciate it.
William Patterson i don't either. This feels like music for really old people that have to use the elevator.
Kosteri x i hope you dont take this the wrong way but if you feel that way then may i ask, are you really old or in an elevator?
