    • Hello, did you crate train Yeti? I try to crate train my new samoyed (I leave her for 30-45minutes alone) but she is crying all the time and looks so so scared when I come back home :(. Nothing changed in 5days. I don't know, maybe its normal and samoyed just need more time to get used to the crate? I am asking because I will have to leave her alone 4times a week for 6hours :/

  • I got my samoyed 2 years ago and it changed my life in so many ways. It was a period of my life where I was feeling alone, very depressed, lost a lot of weight but then it entered my life, having to take care of it helped me going through my depression. Even if I have a bad day, I know it is there waiting for me at home. It is my first dog, not easy for sure, but me and my family planned very well and for a long time when to get it and in the end everything worked fine. It's a blessing for sure! Dogs are wonderful creatures

      @YetisPlace@YetisPlace4 жыл бұрын

    @lobster1340@lobster13404 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, Lobster13, you will definitely be ready for a Samoyed. In dog shows, Huskies are always smaller than Sammies. Are you sure your dog isn’t a combination of Alaskan Malamute and Husky? Unless you happened to have the largest of the litter. I love big doggies and your’s sounds wonderful! Yeti is just really well behaved and sleepy when we film. He gets a lot of daily activity. Sammies are super sweet dogs. Huskies are beauties too. Due to both being northern breed, super intelligent dogs, yes, they always ignore us.

    • Samoyeds have at least 4 times the number of hair follicles than a Husky - their coat is much finer. They NEVER stop shedding. Go take a look at a video of somebody combing out a Samoyed, and tell me you've ever seen that with a Husky. I've did fostering for both Samoyeds and Huskies, and although I prefer the Samoyeds (they are quite a bit more needy and affectionate which I preferred) they are also considerably more work than a Husky. Samoyeds can be needy to the point of annoyance. I was quite close to my dogs. When I had to put them down, I always thought someday I'll get another but the more time that passes, the less I want to go through that again. Worst thing I've ever done was put a dog down that I cared for, for 14 years, did everything I could to keep them healthy and happy only to intentionally end it although I had to do it. I don't regret doing that, I would have (deservedly) felt much worse if they died on their own, in great pain. But I can't repeat that again.

    • It is so tough to lose a beloved pet. I’ve never owned a Husky, but have watched videos of their grooming. Either breed has a lot of hair. The lengths are different and they’re both designed for the arctic cold.

  • I so loved my samoyed Polar - memories of him are my treasures. Polar listened well unless outdoors and something caught his eye! Squirrel!!! Everything you say is soooo true: fur everywhere, 30 min of grooming every day otherwise I’d have to do long sessions twice a week and it was hard on him and me; definitely preferred being with us indoors or out (I’d let him out but within 15 mins he wanted to be back in - even if conditions for him were better outside than inside! And the walks... I did 3 long 1 hour each walk in the day and one final half hour before bedtime. Maybe that’s why he didn’t dig? or shred things around the house. I had a baby’s pool in the yard which he loved to paw around in the summer and bark at the waves... yes, he loved hearing his own voice and always vocalized when happy, sad, excited, saw something he wanted me to see too, wanted something, anything. How I loved him! Be prepared for all Yeti’s mom is saying! The saddest thing is to see such a beautiful dog with such a beautiful personality neglected or abandoned because someone underestimated the work & commitment involved.

    • Hello, S Koehler. Oh, those SQUIRRELS!!!! Such a distraction. Chewy, my first Samoyed, loved chasing them, skunks, birds, chipmunks....basically anything small, with 4 legs. He hated spiders and would squeak and bark at them. Samoyeds do love being inside with their families. Wow, you really walked Polar. No wonder he was such a sweet pup. That certainly helped keep him calm. Active dogs need activity. When they don't get it, they become destructive. Your last sentence, is really and truly the reason I wanted to do our channel. Samoyeds are such a phenomenal breed, for the right type of owner. Thanks for dropping Yeti and I such a beautiful, heartfelt comment, S Koehler. We really do love hearing your stories. Yeti perked up when I told him you had a Sam named Polar. I read your comment to him and Yeti was so excited to hear it. I had to tell him not to get any ideas for digging though.

But seeing dogs enjoying themselves and surrounded by loving owners always makes me happy. I found this video because someone mentioned the race and I never heard of it. They sound wonderful and I can imagine how great they can be for the right person. Thanks for educating people about them! With adorable dogs in general and puppies in particular, it can be easy for people to get a dog that isn't a good fit - even after decades of education on the topic. I hope Yeti and you are doing well and can enjoy happiness together for a long time to come!

    • Thank you for your kind comments. Losing a pet is one the most heartbreaking things to go through. I’ve lost a few throughout my lifetime. They give us so much joy, love, attention and so much more. They all have their own unique personalities. Yeti and I decided to start our channel to educate people about Sammies. Too many people buy them, thinking they’re cute. Then their 4 month to 2 year Sammy becomes a velociraptor. The human doesn’t understand why and returns to the breeder or a dog shelter. Our mission is to help people understand what the breed needs, so they don’t become velociraptors. We’ve helped a lot of people, which makes us happy.

    • Hello, Briana. Sammies are certainly very cute, lovable dogs. It takes a lot of training, walking and playing to get your dog tired, so they wouldn’t be destructive. They are active, hardworking dogs until right before they pass away. Happy early birthday to you! Because you’re 17, you’ll have college and your life to start. Getting your own Samoyed, might not be a good fit for you, at this moment in your life. Perhaps after college, you could consider it. They’re extremely demanding dogs, extremely intelligent, with stubborn, with very difficult to train mannerisms. Northern breed, working dogs, are that way. You might want to get a dog better suited to you right now, at this moment in your life. Then, once you’ve owned another breed of dog, you’ll be better able to understand how to communicate with a Samoyed. Best wishes to you!

  • I came here from watching mayapolarbear who is just so cute I feel like i need a samoyed, haha. But she is so well trained and calm I was surprised to hear you mention they're really stubborn and love digging and barking! Yeti does look like a fiesty boy!

    @snowbyul@snowbyul4 жыл бұрын
    • Yeti is really good, the great majority of them, because he is given a lot of long walks. Mayapolarbear is a girl, who can also be quite destructive too. She’s walked a lot too. When they aren’t walked and played with a whole bunch, they take their northern breed energy out, by destructiveness. All northern breed dogs are that way, unless they’re allowed to go on long walks, haul sleds, herd and be utilized for what they were bred to do. If not, they become destructive in retaliation.

    @laurasporleder-dc7bu@laurasporleder-dc7bu8 ай бұрын
    • You don’t want to punish your dog for barking, which is what an e-collar would do. Instead, I would try to understand why your dog is barking. Our dogs bark to tell us specific things. Playtime, potty, more food/water, pet me, walks, excitement, etc. It’s our job to understand their cues, get them to focus on us. The moment they stop barking, give them what they’re asking. They learn so much faster that way.

  • I have owned 3 Samoyeds and each of them has been wonderful. You CAN train them... just make it fun and they learn very quickly indeed, even quite complex stuff. Samoyeds make poor guard dogs, but they can be very protective of children. They just seem to have a bond with kids and will show aggression if a child is threatened in their view. Some are noisy, some are quiet... all are utterly wonderful, characterful and loving. They do talk back too!

  • i just lost my best friend, a white long haired Siberian Husky. She was almost 15 years old. She was mistaken for a Samoyed. She loved to run, was stubborn, beautiful, always at my side. Her litter mate was a large male, who was white as well. He weighed 85 pounds. Their mom was a throw away in a high kill shelter. I adopted her on her last day, before she would have been put down. She didn't look pregnant, but had two puppies two weeks after I brought her home. They used to play together, and loved howling together. I miss them all.

I give Yeti a command and he looks at me in a questioning manner, asking me, Mom what are you gonna give if I do that? They ask for big things. Walks, fetch, play, wrestle time. Treats work, but you only get their attention for as long as it takes them to gobble the treat.

    • Thank you, M Henry, for appreciating our videos. I do not have the okay to release Yeti’s breeder’s name. I had found his breeder, by looking at the SamoyedClubofAmerica.org and searching for breeders. Those breeders are all very reputable and have good reputations within the dog show circuit, for breeding properly and never over breeding. My first Samoyed’s breeder, had passed away, so I had to go with a new one. I did a lot of research and took the time to meet the breeder and their dogs a few times. We were even blessed to meet Yeti when he was 5 weeks old. At that time, we didn’t know which of the 2 boys would be our’s. One of the little boys had been stuck to me like glue and he turned out to be Yeti. Breeders mark their puppies with different colors of ribbons, perhaps nail polish on different areas of their bodies, in order to keep track of their personalities. When you meet a breeder, they ask you questions about you and your lifestyle. The type of personality you want. Those features start to become apparent about 5 weeks in. Good luck and best wishes to you in your search, M Henry!

    • Samoyeds, are normally not the way mentioned. They do love everyone, have unbelievable energy and are normally quite difficult to train, due to being so intelligent. If you’re searching for a dog, who has great temperament, then talkbeautytome, a Samoyed is a good fit. However, they are extremely difficult dogs to train and are not meant for first time owners. They need to be trained to do, what they were bred to do. Brought on a lot of long walks, plenty of playtime, plenty of time to sniff and hunt rodents. If a Samoyed isn’t allowed to do those things, they will literally eat your house. My first Samoyed did that, until I was able to figure out he needed to do those things. Gabriel just happened to have a wonderful oddball, or he knows how to work well with a Samoyed.

As everybody says:”I have a good dog “ It’s true that they shed all year around but they are so friendly they make a good companion for all ages people…I would recommend their breed…

    • There isn’t a mean bone in a Sammy’s body. They love everyone so much, even strangers. They’re not guard dogs. They shed a lot and aren’t good first time dogs to own. The reason is they’re so stubbornly smart, which makes them nearly impossible to train, unless you know exactly how to work with a dog. If you’ve learned how to train a dog, that training doesn’t work on a Sammy. They need a lot of exercise, playtime, mental challenges, or else they get bored. A bored Sammy, becomes destructive.

He would be ok if we left him home by himself all day. He’s 4 years old. Samoyeds are not good for novices. You’d need to have had at least one dog prior to owning a Sammy. They’re very demanding, need a ton of exercise and activity. Or else, they become destructive.

  • I used to do dog rescue for Samoyeds. They are not easy to own. They are gorgeous affectionate animals, but they require a lot of work to properly and morally own. I fostered and rescued for these animals because people who got them gave up on the work and it's incredible work. They shed a lot of hair, and need regularly brushing - like 2 times a week, and when they are shedding nearly every day. They are very affectionate to the point where you might be annoyed by them. These are not easy to own animals, they are beautiful wonderful dogs but they are lot of work to own. You need to realize that owning one may take up to an hour a day to have one. They require a lot of attention in combing out and just being with them. Rescue is dead in my area, which is good, because they are no longer in fashion. I used to take mine to bars and out to dinner, and so on. They are very engaged in your life. For me, the work was part of the adoration I had for them. You'd better really love a dog to own one because I'm not giving you an underestimate to the work. These are very difficult dogs to have, and I did foster for Huskies too - they are aloof and relatively easy to have.

    • Richard, that’s wonderful that you worked at a Samoyed rescue organization. Too many Sams are turned in, because their owners buy them, based on their beauty alone. Once they get them, they realize the dog is an awful lot more work than anticipated. I’ve been around dogs my entire life. Sams are my absolute favorite breed. You really do have to understand the breed and have the time and energy to own one. They’re extremely active, northern breed, working dogs. Without that hard work, which they love, they get bored and destructive. An hour per day isn’t enough time at all. All day and all night. They’re like your shadow. The more I understand how to communicate with a Sam, the more in love I fall. They are so smart. You have to deeply understand your dog, in order to get them to trust you and to listen to you. You have to step into their paws, to train them. Not have them step into your shoes. Yeti is certainly very different than my first Samoyed, Chewy, was. They each have different communication styles. Chewy spoke in barks that were as expressive as human language. He used howls, yips, yodels, barks and everything else, to talk. It was almost like he was speaking English. Yeti, communicates like a dog. Barks, yips and a few howls. He glances at things he wants and bumps you with his nose. It took a longer time for me to understand Yeti, than it did to understand Chewy. But, it’s such a special bond to have. Their coats are stunning. Yes, they are a lot of work. But, I wouldn’t change that for the world.

Sammies have the strength of the Hulk and will literally tear some human ligaments when they see something they want while on a walk. Or if they’ve decided heck no Mom, I’m not going that way. • They would get along. Sammies love other big dogs and all people, especially children. With smaller dogs and cats, you need to supervise them and work with a Sam so they know the smaller pets are family members too. Sams are pretty prey driven. Although Yeti ignores centipedes, spiders and house mice. Curses! My first Sam, Chewy, used to bark at me to get them. Something about them being in the house, makes a Sam feel ok with it. Your Husky and a Sammy would wear one another out. They’d play, wrestle, doing most of the work to wear them out themselves. Quimby and Bigby, 2 family member Samoyeds who live together and are Yeti’s best buddies, have actually turned their energy into stinker filled activity. One of them starts digging or chewing. Sam #2 races over to see what Sam 1 was doing. Then Sam 2 decides to join in, resulting in a giant hole dug in my backyard, large enough to bury a human. They did that in 3 minutes. They also wanted to join their Dad, when he walked into the basement. The door was shut, so they literally chewed a hole through the wall, large enough for them to sneak through.

You also want to consider if there are wild animals around, who would be able to head inside the fence and could hurt your dog (wildcats, coyotes, bears, etc.). Puppies need to go outside every hour to every few hours, depending on their age. You may want to have a family member or friend come over to let your puppy outside. They should not live outside. Yeti is a very active adult dog, who eats twice per day. When he was a puppy, I followed the feeding recommendations for his age and size, on the back of his dog food packaging.

Both are quite difficult when dealing with a Samoyed. Sams are naturally extremely talkative, using different barking expressions and vocal tones. It can be quite entertaining, while frustrating, when you’re trying to do something else, but your pup has other ideas. As far as training, they’re the smartest dogs out there, which means they don’t want to listen to people. Once you understand those things and start thinking like your Sam does, you’ll be a Samoyed Jedi.
