Getting to know a German on an intimate level can be challenging but when you have a Canadian who is more outgoing and open it some how works. we have been married 8 years now and I would say we still have talks about how we culturally view things differently. for example as a German being too direct can be a little hurtful or beating around the bush as a Canadian is frustrating for a German, we´ve learned to be a little of both now.

    • Reason is probably the language barrier, when they want to invite their girlfriends to meet the parents. I actually had 2 girlfriends that weren't German, I dated long term, but both were fluent in German as well. If you're living in Germany for several years and are getting fluent, the barrier shouldn't be that high anymore. Unless you live in an expat bubble or parallel society with different religion of course. Then there are other obstacles as well. That would probably explain why she actually had dates, but it never went far. People are attracted to her, but she probably is not fluent in German. That fits to what the guys also said in the video as well.

So all these videos look the same, the only thing that make some stand apart are interesting personal stories of the people that are interviewed, sometimes. Of course falling in love with a foreigner happens everywhere, its just life.

I have 8 cousins, of whom 4 are married to a foreigner. Half of my childhood friends is also married to a foreigner. So from my personal experience I would say that Germans really are very open to marry a foreigner and the ideal for us is not someone from our culture, but more someone we have enough in common to be able to agree on fundamental things and enough difference to be able to learn from each other. But maybe my experience is flawed, because I grew up in Munich, where 25% of the population are foreigners, so foreigners feel familiar to us folks from Munich. I could imagine if you grew up in Zwickau it's a bit different.

    • I believe this is only true for people from a closely related culture like Polish or Dutch as the problems with misunderstandings and different cultures would still persist e.g. with a Muslim person born here. Of course there would be much more familiarity however at least to me this seems like opening the same can of worms of cultural and value clashes they are wanting to avoid (e.g. I just learned recently that Muslims aren't allowed to touch dogs or have them in their house which would be a deal breaker to me, though of course it depends on the person and how secular and integrated they are. But since this is about preferences I think that a preference for dating someone from Germany is primarily about dating other native Germans or people from related cultures that the people feel like they understand and are familiar with)

But if you had a Hindu Indian or Chinese Buddhist, for example, with a German person there's a greater chance they will meet you in the middle.

  • oh my god i kept laughing everytime they said that Spanish and Latin American cultures are more open minded. I’m Mexican and American and it’s more that some people outside have a fetish of Latinas that isn’t talked about and also Mexican and other Latin American countries are very traditional and conservative. Because I am also American it wasn’t a problem for my family that I brought my boyfriend over to sleep with in my own room, but in a Mexican household normally this would NOT be allowed unless the couple is officially married…and only by the church. I have a lot of family in Germany and it was honestly a nice experienced to suddenly not be met with so much caution as Mexicans are constantly stereotyped in the American media here, but please do not assume other cultures here are necessarily more open-minded, it’s more so we are very social cultures and we prioritize family. You WILL attend every single social event in your city, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the family very well! 😂 If you don’t like to socialize well too bad, you will make a terrible impression 😂

  • It super much depends on the region. Most things happen in the West so the picture of Germany we get is mostly Bavaria and Frankfurt-Düsseldorf area. In the East it is much different. It is far less diverse there. Therefore people really have no idea about what foreigners are like and how German life in the West is. The East-German racism can be partially explained that way. Most East Germans are very nice people though. I noticed that a lot of German middle aged men are dating women from Eastern Europe right now. In the North, lets say in Schleswig Holstein and Hamburg people are living close to Denmark and are heavily influenced by Scandinavia. About the video I can see the points. A lot of people in Germany are very rooted to their homes and from German perspective other countries are like dangerous and very chaotic places. The girl from Israel put it well. Mos German guys I know want a woman to live a safe and simple life with and when they learn there are complications or that they might need to move to other countries that scares them away.

    • Some other cultures might not be that respectful towards women, that's right, but I wouldn't say german men are completely respectful towards us either....especially when they're drunk. In any case, I think it depends on each man specifically, rather than only the place where he comes from. I am with a guy of a "warm" country and he's more respectful than any other man I've ever met, plus, he makes me feel alive haha. When I dated germans it was so boring all the time. It definitely depends on taste :)

I would go to big stores like Rewe, Rossman, Lidl, and most of the time they couldn't speak or understand it, it was so annoying and I'm from a "third world country" man. • Germans date every day people from all over the world with all kind of backgrounds. Germany is the dominant center/base of Europe with most borders to other countries in the EU (and most relevant ones in Europe). And because it is the economic powerhouse in Europe (surpassed now again like in old times Japan and being ow Nr. 3 Ecoonoy in the world after USA and China) with the biggest population in the EU and together with its neighbors also the most populated one and the wealthiest spot in Europe, there is always a high fluctuation - more so since Schengen free movement (but also due to the 21. century exchange). If people are not able to date one then its more of an individual problem (or with their own culture). True is that the attitudes are culturally a bit more individual and different (not just from Germany but in general central Europe and its neighbors) than in many other cultural spheres. But with a bit more knowledge about the globe you have much more problems to date one in Japan (outside of the international bubble). They are way more strict and still much more ritualized. Or people in especially Western Africa (especially Muslims. There you often still have the backward/ultraconservative mindset of not just about Islam but also about where you come from. Somali tend for instance only to marrage other Somali - similar here in Germany with many Turks. They usually would never marrage a black one). Quite similar in Afghanistan, Tchechenia etc.... general rule: Westernized people who have problems to date other Westernized people have INDIVIDUAL problems! Or in some cases its to remote, location etc. which lowers drastically the opportunity. But the German province is by far more urbanized and connected as for instance remote spots in Africa, Russia, US, Canada, Australia, Brazil etc..
