  • As someone who has watched every year since 1992, I think I am qualified to comment. When I started watching the Contest was still dominated by ethno-ballads, there was still a language rule compelling all competitors to sing in a recognised language in their country accompanied by an orchestra and there was only 25 countries competing. All that, except the ethno-ballads, as gone now. It is a MUCH bigger thing, topping out at 43 countries mid-2010s. Those of us who stuck around did so because we were being introduced to other country's music traditions, encountering new artists and acts who might be worth checking out further and watching around 40 different performances, each one different and creative in its own way. As the Contest expanded, the technology available to support ever more ellaborate and immerse stagings exploded and English-language songs dominated thanks to rule changes and a drive towards finding songs that could have some kind of commercial after-life post-Contest became part of the business plan for Acts who took greater creative control of their entries, what actually happened is a silent declaration of war for the soul of the Contest between the 'identitarian' crowd who split down the middle between sending songs that are ethnically relevant to that country, Ukraine's 2004 and 2022 winners for example, and those who tend to treat the Contest as a Pride event but can also all about the cultural identity side of things, the 'we want a party' crowd who just want pop bangers all night, the sillier the staging the better and the 'quality with content' crowd who want a well written, well produced and well staged entry, that makes them feel some kind of emotion, good or bad and would like to see songs that represent the cultures that send them. Most years have a nice blend of all three - that's what makes people come back. The key to a good entry it to touch each point of that triangle - it is possible to have a queer-influenced entry that also happens to have quality - Italy 2022 which is a love ballad that happens to be sung between two men and is sensitively executed, coming 6th in Turin. You can have an ethnic pride entry which has a great deal quality about it - Ukraine 2016 won in Stockholm ironically with a song written and performed by a Crimean Tartar singer, Jamala (who is Ukraine's Jury spokesperson this year), about a Soviet era ethnic cleansing and is an emotionally affecting and artistic piece. Israel's winner in Lisbon 2018 and Russia's last entry in Rotterdam 2021 managed the rare feat of being ethnically orientated feminist fun bops, with Russia being the more intelligent in its visuals and more musically challenging, a bilingual, folk-hip hop fusion feminist slam to be precise - as such, along with being my personal favourite Russian entry, came pretty close to capturing all three of these points. Indeed, some countries, Portugal, Italy, France, Ukraine have developed reputations for sending songs that actually sound strongly from where they are. You can usually tell its the Israeli entry because the instrumentation usually has subtle nods towards traditional Jewish music. Azerbaijan has recently started leaning into their traditional styles with their non-qualifying entry this year utilising a traditional singing technique which is protected by UNESCO. Norway has sent something this year I think we could categorise as Nordic. If you want something culturally specific and effective, try giving song number 2 a go this year - Ukraine. Of course this IS an entertainment show, it is SUPPOSED to be a fun and there will be fun. If you want silly, try Finland's 'No Rules' (song no. 17 tonight). There's NOTHING wrong with fun, especially if there is actually a message hidden amongst the silliness (which there is with Finland). Sadly, most country's broadcasters AREN'T proud of their country's traditions and therefore do not short-list songs that do lean into national identity - compare Denmark's recent run of 3 non-qualifications, the last Danish entry most people care for is back in 2018 with Rasmussen and 'Higher Ground' aka the one with the pacifist Vikings. Olly doesn't have that, he is trying to have his cake and eat it, stuck with a fairly commercial track that could come from anywhere and is intended solely to sell records on streaming platforms, performed by a disposable artist. The only way he can overcome that IS to emphasise his identity, without the thoughtfulness of the band Vesna who came 10th for Czechia in 2023 or the brother-sister team of Salvador and Luisa Sorbal who set records for Portugal winning in a land-slide in the Kyiv contest of 2017 with a Portuguese language bossa nova influenced piano ballad which was genuinely lovely. It's telling that France, Italy, Ukraine, Moldova most years, perennial underdog-turned country to watch out for Portugal, Israel and some of the Balkan countries have all built brands by doing the EXACT opposite of that approach. Hell it's telling that Sam Ryder took us to 2nd in Turin in 2022 because he was both entertaining as a performer, the staging and song worked and because he was reaching back into British traditions - specifically the 1970s glam era, to represent the UK. Olly and the BBC are NOT doing this, they are doing the OPPOSITE and they have nothing EXCEPT Olly and Olly's identity to reach into because the BBC DOES NOT actually like Britain and does not want to send something that sounds or feels actually British or likes the British people at all.

  • The Eurovision song contest has always been a load of nonsense, even when it was just about the songs. Most songs that won it would never had been big hits if they hadn't won. Thats not the fault of the artists, it was just the bland nature of the songs that only got the radii and tv exposure due to them being Eurovision entries. Nowadays it's not even about the songs, its just a load of virtue signalling camp nonsense. I'm sure there are many people who probably do enjoy this but I am not among their ranks and wont be watching.
