The Late Show's Rockin' 2 Year Coronavirus Pandemi-Versary: A F̶o̶n̶d̶ Look Back
Two years ago tonight, Stephen Colbert performed his monologue for a nearly-empty Ed Sullivan Theater as New York City began to enter the first phase of the pandemic lockdown. Join Stephen for a not-so-fond look back at the past two years and some of the ways we've grown (primarily at the waistband). #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Ever since the Omicron wave started and I went back to my OCD levels of caution, I've kinda been having a bit of nostalgia every once in a while for the past two years. It's odd but it totally makes sense for me when I think about it. I love going out and am social as hell, but not having to figure out all these different engagements day to day week in week out, the consistency was at times comforting. When this entire thing truly becomes endemic, it'll be such a fascinating period to look back on as we're barreling through this funny thing called life.

I actually watched Contagion this week to see how much they got right (I couldn't watch it when we first got the news) - gotta admit, the creators and all the actors deserve Oscars. That sh*t was insanely accurate.
Same here, just watched it again last night. While Jude Law’s character stood for all the bogus denial and profiteering off sham remedies (substitute Hydrochloriquin for Forsythia), that aspect of what did come to pass was sorely underscored. I suppose it’s because the virus was more severe, and harder to deny, but amazingly enough we still have close to half the present population that doesn’t even think this is real. That, and having everyone joyfully getting vaccinated at the end lacked rows of crazed anti-vaxxers holding signs and shouting about how we’re being chipped, while using their cellphone (which does a way better job than a chip ever could).
I told my friends it was going to be years of misery and people dying. what's upsetting is there are millions who have gotten super ill but didn't die, but went through hell, and many still have so much "long covid". please respect the scientists when they warn you next time!!!
A lot of people died needlessly; but for bad information perpetuated by people we are supposed to be able to trust, they would be alive. They trusted, listened and lost their lives. At this point I'm not angry, just sad.
78% of covid deaths were due to obesity. PUT THE FORKS DOWN PEOPLE.

If there's a silver lining to the leaded gas story, it's that we CAN change the world for the better if we put our minds to it. Just like DDT and CFCs. Eliminating these all lead to measurable improvements in the environment in a relatively short period of time.
Clever pun lol.

@@DoctorProph3t I don't even know what to say, except to either be extremely sarcastic or long-windedly angry. I'll do neither. Motherf*cker! Can we do nothing right in this world? Answer, no.

A flood doesn't start when everything is under water. It didn't start in March, it started in January when the WHO warned about the "Public health emergencies of international concern". When countries didn't implement their plans for such an emergency, it turned into a pandemic. At that point, it was too late.
It's funny because I started buying masks in December because I'd heard initial reports coming out of China - the story of a mysterious pneumonia coming out of Wuhan just felt a little too ominous.
One could argue that the beginning was when Mango Mussolini fired the pandemic response task force that had been put in place to handle this kind of issue.

The show only went on because of contractual obligations
My most vivid Covid memory was two years ago walking into Walmart and seeing the the entire paper goods aisle was completely empty leaving a huge void.
Two years already? Just kidding, it's felt like at least 10. Thinking back, I picked up my kids from school after filling my tank and buying "staple" food items...March 13, 2020...and then the schools were like "Don't come back Monday." It was crazy.
I know I've aged at least that much! 😕

I remember I was still a teen when it first came to the states. Got voluntarily laid off work a few weeks after my 20th birthday. It's crazy because now I'm 22 and I still work where I worked then. I mean, I've also had alot happen in my personal life in those couple years too though.
It simultaneously feels like it's been 10 years but also just a few months. Perception of time has been destroyed.
I actually don't remember much that happened in the past 2 years. The few things I remember I tend to mix them up. Not quite remembering which happened when It's been a terrible 2 years. I lost my mom and aunt within a space of 2 weeks due to Covid
When he said 8 weeks a literally lmao! I had totally forgot that was the original prediction...but then again I also decided our guest bathroom needed a full paint job (which eventually spiraled into the renovation from hell) and consumed a large amount of alcohol in that time frame so its mostly a blur.
I think that was a forecast for how long the lockdown would last, not the whole pandemic. Here in Spain, after only six weeks we were allowed to leave the house for up to an hour each day to get exercise, staying within 1km of our homes.
"I'm not stupid, I was exposed to a lot of gasoline as a kid." pretty much a valid excuse lol
It actually makes to me now. I have always wondered what the F is wrong with the average American. With Qanonites and your MTGs
Colbert and Evie definitely helped me get through the early pandemic. And while things were scary and we had to adjust our lives, the first 5 mos were kind of nice at our house. Our kids were home from college and high school, studying remotely, and we were working from home. It was like a long vacation where we cooked together, watched movies, played games, and went for walks around the neighborhood. We hadn't had that much time together with our kids probably their entire lives, so we look back fondly on that part of it. They're both back at college now and we miss them dearly.

I've waited 9 years for this story about Leaded gasoline to come to mainstream media! What they failed to mention was the 22-Year Curve; the correlation of lead exposure to violent crime rates. 1969 was the peak year of Lead exposure from Leaded gasoline in America, and 1991 had the most violent crimes in America. The annual Lead exposure curve and the violent crime curve correlate almost perfectly in the 20th Century, albeit with a 22 year delay.

A bit off-topic tonight, but anyways, since people have encouraged me to continue sharing, here goes... Several days ago, I shared a story that made the headlines all over Norway (I'm Norwegian). I'll share it again, and then add a new story that made headlines yesterday: A young Norwegian man, 18 years old, was on his first day of work as a crane truck driver. This was in the town of Tromsø, far north in Norway and not that far from our shared border with Russia. He was finishing his work when a man from a Russian fishing boat came up to him and handed him an envelope. The lad, a bit confused, glanced at what was written on it. It said in handwritten letters: "Human help for the Ukrain" He asked the man if he wanted him to deliver it. Yes, that was what the Russian would like. The young Norwegian told the press that he stood with the envelope in his hands for a moment, shocked and very moved. "This shows that they want to help", he said. After conferring with others in the trucking company, who also were so moved that they actually took "time out" from work that day to let what had happened sink in, it was decided that the envelope will go to Norway's Red Cross in Ukraine. The lad was no less moved when he learned the content of the envelope: 5000 kroner, or 558.44 US dollars. Moved by the fact that a man, whose country is in war with the people he wants to help, chose to trust a total stranger with such an amount of money. In the same Norwegian town, a man has now started a fundraising campaign to help the Russians on the seven Russian fishing boats docked in the local harbor. The reason is, he says, that since Visa and Mastercard has pulled out from Russia, it will not be possible for them to continue to provision themselves during their stay in Norway. He has talked with a few of these men, and they admit that the situation is difficult. He says he is surprised and heartened by the positive response his campaign is obtaining, that while there are some who are saying that the fishermen deserve to starve to death "because they are Russians", he prefers to focus on all the positive response and the people who are donating. With the help of a friend of his, a Russian woman, he will find out what their needs are, and the Norwegian tourist company Northern Yachting will provide boats and crew to ship the provisions out to those of the fishing boats that are docked in the middle of the harbor. The CEO of this company, who himself has experience as a fisherman, says this experience is one of the reasons they are helping the foreign fishermen. He have heard they have little food left, and he knows the salary that Russians on that type of boats gets, is a meager one. I'm posting these stories as a reminder of our shared humanity, of the fact that it is oftentimes those with the least who are the first to give, and of the compassion for others that exists across borders notwithstanding any heinous whims from the far too powerful. As a fellow Norwegian replied to my original post: "Thank you for sharing the story. I think there are many who need something positive in all the negative". - And while not being a fan of copying and pasting, I am making an exception regarding this content.
Thanks for doing so
Thank you
the russian people are not the enemy, just the leadership
From the US - Thank you for posting this, and I agree that it should be shared and re-posted as many times as is necessary, to be seen by as many people as possible. I'm sure most people will agree that the average Russian (or any nationality for that matter) just wants to live a long and healthy life, at peace with those around them, and in a world where we can share and exchange ideas freely. The fact that Putin feels a need to block Russian communication with the outside world, while funneling his own inverted narrative to his own people, speaks to this. Freedom of Speech is not just about "I can say whatever I want". It also represents every person's right to speak to whoever they want, whenever they want, regardless of their nationality, and without there being a fear of being consequences for doing so.
@@bullpuppy7455 It is true what you say. Pootin, who is doing his darnedest to earn the title "Deranged Dictator", has been used to oppress free speech for a long time, and sadly many Russians have become used to it. But what he is doing now, enforcing laws that will put people in prison for up to 15 years just for using the words "War" or "Invasion" and otherwise just speaking up about reality, might have even some of the more brainwashed (the older generation mainly) reacting and question things. As might the results of the sanctions. If not to them, it is plain to the World that these new actions by Pootin to suppress the truth speaks of a scared paranoid egocentric individual without a smidge of compassion nor respect for his own people. Besides waging war against the people of Ukraine and their country, that sick individual is also, in many ways, waging war against the people of Russia and the country itself.

I just had a horrible flashback from the 80s/90s. Anyone else remember cloth rolls of towels in the gas stations? You pull the lever, and some clean towel comes down, but it is still connected to a reel. When you finished, you just left the dirty part hanging, and the next guy would pull the lever for a clean bit, and your used old bit would roll up into another reel. A company would regularly come by, collect and wash them, and then we would REUSE THEM AGAIN. How we didn't die from that I'll never know.
I have no idea, I hated those things, they were thin and icky and very often used up. Did they actually get washed and used again? I hope they were washed with something industrial strength. They never changed them often enough either. Anything in the air would be all over them too. *shudder*

Steven Colbert helped me get through the pandemic 😁 😎 😷 🙋♀️
Also Trevor Noah doing his show from his living room
My morning routine became watch Colbert, Seth, Kimmel, Fallon and Cordon opening monologues lol It was such a weird time.
Thank you for being there during the pandemic.
Beautiful. I got tested positive on the second anniversary! Great fun.
We’re you vaccinated ? But it’s sucked anyways getting covid
8 weeks...yeah. Remember when we all thought our fellow human beings were at least marginally capable of rational thought?
8 weeks turn into 8 months 8 months turn into 2 years
My brother in law died about a week or so before lockdown and we were just able to get a “Celebration of Life” in before lockdowns hit our area. Even then, not many showed up

you did well on the one year quar-anniversary. you said you HOPED that we'd have nothing to commemorate. you didn't say we wouldn't.
Happy Pandemi-versary!?
To you too?
Yaaaaaaay… here’s a present for everyone 🦠
😷 🎂 🎉 😀 🍾 🥂 🍺🍺🍺🍺 🤪
Pandemic Stephen will always have a spot in my heart
Yeah, you sound pointless.
Spring is here. 30 robins here, eating last years apples from the tree. Some of them hanging upside down, others passed out on the lawn.
I know this is unrelated to the monologue, but why haven't they made a Funko Pop of Stephen Colbert or Jon Batiste? it would make my life a little better
I adore this man. That's all.
Coronavirus is a flu
One day Therese will wake up.
Some people adore Hitler some people adore dumb coughs some people adore Biden. But they don't have everybody fooled. Biden is a dumb coff.

I actually prefer a triple layered cloth mask. Been using it since. I tended to my daughter who caught Covid but came out unscathed
Oh how optimisrtic we were 3 years ago thinking this would only last a few weeks or a few months. Still, I have gone through a lot these past 3 years. Thanks for keeping me informed and entertained through these 3 years. One of the things I look forward to doing now that the pandemic is winding down is to come to a taping of The Late show again. The last time I was in the live Audience I had so much fun!
The whole toilet paper shortage thing was such a joke for us here in Thailand who haven't used TP for a couple of decades. The butt gun rules! ;-)
When the pandemic started, I had only recently (like, in September 2019) been forced to learn what a bidet was and how to use it. I didn’t even know what it was called. I had seen them on trips to Europe, Africa and Asia, where it seems almost every toilet features one, but I never knew what they were called, I guess because I wasn’t interested enough to ask anyone. In September 2019 I was staying in a hotel in India where it was obviously not customary for housekeeping staff to leave toilet paper in guest rooms. This was strange, as it was my first hotel in India, although I had stayed in several hotels in Nepal and always enough toilet paper was provided without having to ask for it. At this Indian hotel, however, every day I had to request a roll of toilet paper, and every roll was maybe 1/10 the size of a roll of Charmin. So one morning I had to go really bad, but unfortunately I had sneezed a couple hours earlier and used up my daily allotment of toilet paper. Nobody was at the hotel desk so I ran around the ground floor and my floor looking for a housekeeper. Eventually I couldn’t wait anymore, and thought “I’m gonna have to figure out how to use that damn nozzle”. So I did. Moments later I asked and learned that the damn nozzle was called a bidet. Amazon delivered mine promptly and it was waiting to be installed when I arrived back home. Now, toilet paper seems gross to me, and I really hate the rare occasion I am not at home and must use it. Americans are dumb. I challenge you - try a bidet sprayer. Save money. Save time. Enjoy life without underwear stains. Laugh at empty toilet paper shelves. You’re welcome.
Steve you are a GENIUS
"this might go on for the next eight weeks!" HAHAHAHA! thanks for the LOLZ
Colbert: Rockin 2 YEAR drought Batiste: Yes, INDEED!!!!!
I don't think it's fair to blame _exclusively_ leaded gas for the lowering of American IQ. I can think of quite a few other things 😄
Leaded roadside dandelion greens were a 1970's heavy metals salad experience
Ok when you said the 8 weeks thing, I actually shed a couple of tears. Fuuuck I forgot how hopeful we were
