Lake Mead Update - April 2024 | Sharp Fall in Water Levels Projected
Hello and welcome to timeBomb. Engineers recently discovered major issues with the pipes that release water from Lake Powell. How will this issue impact water levels and future operations at Hoover Dam and Lake Mead?
In this episode we begin with a review of the current Lake Mead water level statistics. But the Lake Mead statistics only give a small view into how the Colorado River is performing. That is why we also provide statistics for Lake Powell, the reservoir located just upstream from Lake Mead. Operations at Lake Powell directly impact water levels at Lake Mead. After that we take a look at the storage capacity of the entire Colorado River system. I’ll give ya a hint, water levels are not heading in the right direction for this time of year.
Next we take a look at the latest water level predictions from the Bureau of Reclamation. Even though the snowpack in the Upper Colorado River Basin is above average, engineers are predicting below average inflows into Lake Powell.
Then we shift our focus to the broken pipe issue at the Glen Canyon Dam. These damaged pipes could drastically affect water flow to Lake Mead.
