History repeated itself this year with Gonzaga v UCLA. It was literally like watching a replay.
Facts!
UPDATE + Couple of corrections: I made this video before the Sweet 16 ended... so here's some updates :) -Florida Atlantic is GOATED! 2nd 9 seed since tournament expanded in 1985 to ever make the Final Four. Dusty May is a legend. -5th time ever we've had no 1 seeds in the final four, BUT the first time ever we've had no 1 seeds in the Elite 8... Corrections: - Oregon State made the Elite 8 in 2021 (don’t know how I missed this) - Wichita St got bounced in the round of 32, not the Sweet 16 in 2014 - Florida Gulf Coast's S16 run was 2013, not 2016 - Steve Nash led Santa Clara as a 15 seed in 1993, not 1997 - NC State won the title in 1983 as a 6 seed, but I focused on 1985 and on because that’s when the tournament expanded to 64 teams. Looking back I should have included them. Too iconic to not. I think that's all of them :) My promise to each of you is to always get better and better each video. Please always correct anything you see in the comments. I read everyone of them and it only makes the videos better. Thank you to everyone who’s enjoyed the channel so far. I'm amazed that Butler went to the championship in back-to-back years, which has got to be exciting as a mid-major program at the time.
Yup and the second year they had no Gordon Hayward. Brad Stevens 100% deserved that Celtics job lol
Could be the yr. Mid major could win it all. FAU (C-USA) or San Diego St (MWC). 🏆 Gonzaga (WCC) screwed it up, losing to UConn. Same with Houston (AAC) losing to Miami. . Last mid major to win it all, 1990 UNLV (Big West Conference) ran Duke off of the court in the National Championship game. Almost made another NC the next season, lost to same Duke team in the Final 4. Then Duke won their first NC (1991) against Kansas.
@@jeffreekoch9298 Well, if you want to be technical, UConn was in the AAC when they won in 2014. Though I can understand why people wouldn't count that as a mid major championship.

Correction: 3 #6 seeds have made the title game (1983 NC State, 1988 Kansas, 1992 Michigan), and two have won it all (NCST & KS).
The first ever sports event that I remember going to was UConn vs Syracuse in the Big East Tournament. Kemba made me a fan of his and I will never forget watching them win it all and being so happy for him

I thought Oregon State also made the Elite 8 as a #12 seed in 2021.
They did, he left a comment saying that (but didn't pin the comment for some reason) but he said he doesn't know how he missed it lol

My dad is a huge syracuse fan and when they are in march madness, he always picks them to win. When they got final four as a 10 seed, he was one of the few people to get them correct in the final four

Hell of a video man, mad respect from a Cuse fan and DC native. I think the most impressive 11 seed run is the 2006 George Mason team (a little DC bias of course). It really helped out the university but also compared to the UCLA team, they were not stacked with elite talent (UCLA is a historic powerhouse and this current UCLA team is still good).

2013-14 Wichita State only advanced to the Round of 32, where they lost to the eventual runner-up in 8 seed Kentucky. UPenn was the first (2nd overall at the time of this video, 3rd overall now with FAU) 9 seed to make the Final Four, doing so in 1979, the first year for seeding. Oregon State also made the Elite Eight in 2021, becoming the second 12 seed to ever do so.

That 12th seed Missouri team was stacked and ranked in the top 5 at one point. They massively underachieved most of the season but got in as 12 seed and finally figured it out.

I’m thinking UConn, but I’m still hoping that my Aztecs can keep pulling off upsets and make more history. And here is an interesting fact: there is a possibility this year that we can have 3 teams make the Final Four for the first time ever. Either SDSU or Creighton will make their first appearance, and FAU with a win over Kansas State could do the same. Finally, Miami would make their first if they defeat Texas.

This is now the fourth year in which all #1 seeds missed the Final Four. And the first year none of them even made the Elite Eight. How embarrassing for the Selection Committee.

Yes they did!! I focused on stats from 1985 on for the lower seeds because the tournament expanded in 1985 to 64 teams. But you’re right!

2023 is by far the craziest march madness. No 1 2 or 3 seeds in final four! FAU and San Diego state both Cinderella's making their first final four and one will make their first championship game. Simply the craziest

This year might be the first 11 seed to make title game. NC State is going off with DJ Burns and DJ Horne. One of the best miracle runs in tournament history. Going from winning the ACC tournament to get a bid steal and going all the way to final four. Reminds of the kemba walker run, but a much lower seed

It's pretty crazy that we've seen a 15 make the elite 8, but not supposedly better 13 and 14. The best chance a 14 had was in '86 when Cleveland st lost to a David Robinson lead Navy (7 seed!) 71-70. By the way, CSU beat 3rd seed Indiana in the first round, and this upset is memorialized in the movie "A season on the Brink".

One thing you do see is that there has been a lot of parody between the top schools and the bottom ones in Div 1 as the gap is much closer that it used to be. Just look at 15 seeds there have been 11 15 seed wins ever since 1985 since 2011 though there have been 7 15 seeds that have advanced to the round of 32 (sure 2012 had two occur in the same year but still the point remains and also another point is the last time a 15 seed won before that date was 2001 which was Hampton vs Iowa State) also another thing to point out 15 seeds advancing passed the second round has only occurred after that date this is also the same time that the only 2 16 seed victories have occurred. Also it is worth mentioning with 12 vs 5 there has never been a year where no 5 seeds won but there has been a few that got close as there has been 5 times that 3 12 seeds won that year and only 2 of those are before 2011 with the earliest on happening in 2002. Intresting thing was if a 12 and a 14 seed had won this year it would have been the first year that each seed had a represenative in the next round. But what this all means is that these lower seeds are getting better so expect more upsets and potentially more lower seeds to make it further in the tournament

This video is only a couple of weeks old and could use a lot of updates after what happened in the 2023 tournament! Some notable things that happened this year: - UCONN winning as a 4 seed - The final 4 not having a single 1, 2, or 3 seed and not a single 1 seed making the elite 8 - Two 5 seeds and a 9 seed making the final four - a 15 seed making the sweet 16 (Princeton) - a 16 seed defeating a 1 seed (FDU vs Purdue)

UCLA was cool, but VCU was the most unexpected tournament run to a Final Four in my opinion. They also started in the First Four. UCLA has a historic history, VCU was a nobody, beat Kansas. They deserved more praise IMo

I think Princeton has a seriously good chance to make the elite 8. They just have to show up on defense like they have apparently done all year. It was interesting to see how well their defense translated to bigger-conference foes thus far. Their OPPG is 59, **and** they held Arizona to 55. 👀 I still doubt they could make it past Bama tho.. But anything is possible; as my father likes to quote when the odd are slim, "so you're saying there's a chance." 😂
