How to shuck and clean cockles for chowder

  • All you have to do to open them is get 2 cockles and put their knuckles together like a lock and then twist and 1 will open. That's how I snacked on them while collecting as a kid.

  • I'm from the Pacific Northwest and I clam all the time. The easiest way to open any clam ( especially cockles ) is to lay them in your sink and Slowly pour boiling water over them. They will pop out and leave a clean shell.

  • I purge them overnight in sea water with some oatmeal and then boil them unti shell opens. Much easier.

  • Holy crap I just watched again. lol. Just harvested a limit of these with my little man and a buddy at Netarts Bay, Oregon. Gonna make clam linguini and a chowder. Check out some of the other clams Netarts had to offer if you get the chance. Great bay clamming there.

  • Wow! what a waste. Obviously they've never been to NZ. You do the cornmeal thing over night or until they are no longer spitting out sand (change the water daily) then chuck them shell and all into a pan of either boiling water or butter and eat. Or you can add some white wine to the pan of butter, simmer and allow to reduce, add in some flour to make a roux, add some milk, coconut milk/cream or cream (whatever you like) add some fish stock, some finely cut carrot, chunks of fish, shrimps maybe and you've got yourself a seafood chowder. What is with American removing the Orange tongue from scallops too its the tastiest bit.

  • I have a question for everyone. Why aren't Cockles seen in Restaurants like Razor Clams? You don't see them here in Oregon only Clam Strips and Razor Clams. Also is there any place in Southern Oregon or on the Coast where you can buy Cockles? I for one would love to be able to buy Cockles in the Store like you can other types of Clams.

  • I'm betting you don't do this often, 'cause the method you use is way too laborious! I agree with other commenters who suggest that there are other much easier ways. Besides, unless you're using your clams raw, who bother shucking them? And only a novice would shuck a cockle and eat it raw. Do you also eat oysters? The whole thing? Well, if you eat every part of the oyster, why not eat every part of the cockle? A cockle and an oyster have essentially the same digestive system!

  • Seriously? This takes WAAAAAY too long to get the meat out and clean it before eating!!! Here's a much faster way . . . Put cockles in a pot of boiling water. In about 1-2 min (max), the shell will open up and the foot (edible meat) will detach from the shell and slide right out (remove meat immediately or it will be too tough to eat!). Cut off the "head" and slide finger down into the "tube" to get digestive tract gunk out. Rinse in water until gunk is out - VOILA! Ready to eat!
