He was one of the brilliant minds of the Islamic Golden Age. Often dubbed as the 'Founding Father of western thought', his works left a profound & ever lasting effect on names like Voltaire & Rene Descartes.
i will be very careful of calling him that. a lot of what we call "western thought" often contradict the teachings of Islam. yes we can all agree he laid the seeds for the Renaissance and Enlightenment age but i don't think he would have agree with "West's" conclusion which is liberalism and secularism.

I wanna say that I really appreciate how you as a European and non-Muslim have a very nuanced view of our faith. I feel like both Western academics and our own scholars possess view that rationalism, science, philosophy, etc are incompatible with religion, that Islam can only be one set of beliefs, and the Orthodoxy is infallible, even though for our entire history up this has never been the case Perhaps it is due to your European and non-Muslim upbringing. There was a man in the 20th century named Leopold Weiss aka Muhammad Asad, who was born a secular European Jew who later become a devout Muslim and scholar. When he visited Al-Azhar University, he noticed that the students would sit all day reciting and learning the works of great medieval theologians and philosophers to be taught Islamic law. However this was all they did, and were hardly allowed to become theologians and philosophers for themselves. Asad wondered why these students were being taught this way and could not get a decent answer from the people there. He wrote extensively about how crazy it was to say, in what was once the greatest places of thinking in the world, that only these specific medieval thinkers ideas were correct and that thinking in the modern era was heavily discouraged for seemingly no good reason. Though this problem still is an issue among many Muslims today, but I am glad many people like you, Muslim or not, are still able to see Islam for what it really is
Oh my God thank you for bringing up Leopold (Asad). Road to Mecca and his interpretation of the Quran (+ the very first english translation of sahih bukhari) are AMAZING. His translations are particularly niche because he 'felt' the language of arabic after spending a decade with bedouins. There's an immense difference between learning a language for scholastic reasons and learning a language's 'soul' which can primarily be achieved through experience.
Also this is also the reason why I like this channel. I would still trust a non muslim's interpretation more since the current muslim world largely propagates the same teachings without any independent thinking ( you'll be declared a heretic lol )

I have been searching for a video like this. As an Spaniard, I feel sad because we usually tend to reject, or to at least forget, what Al-Andalus meant for the whole country, and how it went to model our society. It is usually seen as something from 'abroad', and we do not really get to know much of it, and generally from a biased perspective. Of course, views might differ from mine, and other Spanish may have a different impression, but I really feel like we lost a lot when the Catholic Kings expeled all Muslims... They had no right to do so; they claimed being descendents from the Visigoths, and the Moors, invadors. But what were the Visigoths, if not the same? What were the Romans, then, who came before them, and thus the Carthanigians, the Celts, the Greeks, the Iberians, and all those who came before? Islam is seen today as a religion of hate, and that does not seem fair. And I myself am a convinced atheist, I would not change that for anything, but we should learn to see other cultures as having depth, different points of view within them, just like our societies. Spain was once half Muslim, and although we might tend to forget that part of our national history, at least in our language remain a notable amount of words from Arabic; ojalá que la albóndiga esté en la alhacena junto a la almohada.
The Andalucian culture was a huge influence on the entire Mediterranean region, they had arts and sciences and discoveries that are still very impressive nowadays... I find it sad that not only it's been forsaken by its people but that actual foreigners to it like the ottomans claimed portions of it as their own while they made no contributions to its prosperity

I like to think Ibn Rushd IS the reason why Christianity became more accepting of scientific and philosophical ideas over time. Not the direct reason, of course, but the people his work influenced.

I'm an Aussie Anglo-Scot and in my youth/uni i loved my art history esp the European Renaissance and have long sought to understand the Ancients, near Ancients and deep ones alike. I'm into that which presaged the Sumerians and set the scene for all the derivatives! So much came from those excellent Islamic scholars. I 'love' Averroes (Ibn Rusd.) He was/is so astute, sensitive, firm and gentle and keenly balanced especially clearly so in his understanding of the non-duality of gender. Hip hip hooray! WHAT ARE THE SATANIC VERSES OF MOHAMMED? The satanic verses incident is also known as qissat al-gharaniq which translates to the “story of the cranes,” in English. The incident is described in a number of Islamic books and by every Koranic scholar of note during the first two centuries of Islam including various biographies of Mohammed by al-Waqidi transcribed by Ibn Sa’d, as well the tasfir of al-Tabari and Ibn Ishaq. The incident (really two incidents) refers first to Mohammed’s claims first that three of the goddesses of the pre-Islamic Meccans ought to “be exalted” and “whose intercession is hoped for,” at a time when Mohammed was seeking approval for Islam and currying favor with the thusfar unconquered Meccans. After Mohammed recited Sura an-Najm he uttered the following after verses 19 and 20: “Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-Uzza and Manat, the third, the other? These are the exalted high flying cranes, whose intercession is hoped for.” When things did not go well with the Meccans, Mohammed and his followers were forced to flee from Mecca to Medina. The praise for Meccan goddesses then seemed not only unnecessary but profoundly embarassing for Mohammed and so he told his followers that Gabriel had appeared to Mohammed and informed him that it had been the devil and not, he, Gabriel that had revealed the verse praising the Meccan goddesses. Of course this created a further problem for Muslims, as Mohammed himself had told his followers that at least one of verses allegedly “revealed” to him by Gabriel, had in fact been in error. Worse, much worse, Mohammed had revealed that he was unable to distinguish the devil from the Archangel Gabriel, leading many to wonder how many other Suras and traditions had also been diabolically inspired. Realizing the damage that the satanic verses incidents more modern Islamic scholars have attempted (unconvincingly to most non-Muslim authorities) to discredit the incident. Verses were added to the Koran to attempt to abrogate (change) the satanic verses (Sura 53:19-20), Tabari VI-107. Certainly if one looks at the application of Islam worldwide since its inception in the 7th century, it would be hard to argue that its diabolical inspiration seems clear. In its unrelenting quest for world conquest by any means the Islamic ideology has been the worst source of human misery in history. Some sources put the death toll of Islamic wars and slave trade as high as 670 million. The greatest genocide in history was during the Islamic conquest of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of India during which between 60 and 100 million, Hindus, Buddhists and others were slaughtered. The mountain range between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Hindu Kush, in English means Hindu death and commemorates that genocide. The last bastion of slavery on earth is in the Islamic nations. One in five citizens of Islamic Mauritania is a slave even today. It is Muslims themselves who have suffered more than any other people. Despite the fabulous wealth of the Islamic oligarchy the income of ordinary Muslims is a less than half of the world average.

Few people in the modern West realise that Thomas Aquinas' religious philosophy came directly from Ibn Rushd's reading and interpretation of Aristotle. Personally I don't like Aristotle but it amuses me and annoys me in equal measure how Aquinas is cited as a very important figure in the development of "Western thought" without understanding the role of Rushd and Islamic civilisation in that development. Ibn Rushd's attitude to women is heartening especially considering he was a student of Aristotle who had decidedly reactionary views on female emancipation. It is remarkable to think about the high level of philosophical debate that Rushd was engaged in Al Andalus at that time, especially if we contrast it to the limited intellectual life of the rest of Europe at the same period. Today people cite Oxford, Cambridge and Bologna as the first "European" universities without ever considering that of Cordoba, or the fact that those first educational institutions in Christendom were based on an Islamic model and filled (in terms of the curriculum) with Islamic learning.
Averroes was only one of Thomas' many sources, he was not his sole source for Aristotelianism

Thank you for this. I am middle aged and not a scholar, I am semi retired and enjoy travelling (predominantly long distance mountain hikes). These travels have piqued my curiosity about the histories of our societies that are symbiotice with our geographical world. I will never be a scholar, but having hiked through the mountains of Andalucia for multiple weeks at a time, visiting the archeolological sites, the seats of learning such as Córdoba and Toledo amongst many others, learning about figures such as Averroes ignites my mind and inspires me to read more and walk further. A second month-long coast to coast hike across the mountains of Andalucia will start soon, and I hope to carry Averroes and his thoughts with me. Life is good at such times! Good for the body, soul and mind.

@Amperoar Qw As mentioned in the video, it is a mistake to use modern labels on people in the past. Also, I am uncertain that he would classify as an atheist even so. Just because you are capable of thinking for yourself, and not fall pray to established dogma, it does not mean you are not religious at all. I know those who consider themselves christian altho they believe in reincarnation. People are complicated and so is religion. Dont get me wrong. I am quite in favor for atheism, but we must view this from an unbiased perspective (as far as that is possible) in order to get closer to the truth.

But I really will like to know something about Africans and Islam, all of your study is based on Arab people, and nothing on The African Preasants and input in Islam. Don't we have some history in the Islamic world, did we not play a part in the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Was Arabia all people of olive skin ? It's very hard to believe that the people of Africa had not real important role at the time of the Prophet Muhammad, except the call to pray, and the first woman who died for her belief in The oneness of Allah/God. I also love those arguments/counter arguments between Ghazali and Ibn e Rushd and you can agree or disagree with their ideas but the most important thing is that they are trying to convey their ideas with arguments, logic and references which brings up the question that where did that all went wrong as a society and culture and I really don’t have any answer for that but as a Muslim I really appreciate those people who lived and did such great work many centuries ago. I only follow Shayck Albani Aqida, he lived in the 20th century a true Sahaba I only repeat what he says and call other Muslims Kafirs, if they don’t agree with me. Thank you for warning me. I really love your videos, and I thank you for your truthfulness about religion. Am a Muslim from the Caribbean, who knew is muslims from my country, but nothing about Islam 😍 as did most of the muslims in my Country at that time. But when I migrated to the USA I started listening to African Americans giving dua, and I became very interested in Islam.

Ibn rushd was still very influential in the islamicate world as a scholar of jurisprudence. His bidayatul mujthahid was a standard text to many of the usulul fiqh students in many madrasas across the eastern World if I'm not mistaken.

@@abdallaosman5268 what? It still is. Same guy who wrote Bidayat al Mujtahid wrote the rebuttal to Imam Ghazali. Ibn Rushd. It's still the go-to book on Islamic jurisprudence.

@@abdallaosman5268 how was it not his domain? He was a qadi "judge" which means he was very well aware of usul al fiqh otherwise he couldn't become a judge ( or Islamic judge).

Nice video and quite informative. However I personally find the clash of thoughts and ideas between Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd (averrose) very refreshing and interesting. The fact that their attitudes towards each other with all that passionate scientific responses ( regardless if we do agree with both of them on every single detail of their philosophy or not) prove that they had no respect to the status quo when it comes to delivering real knowledge and a solid scientific ground” from their perspective” to their followers, students, and all those who have been influencing down the road.It is something in history we don’t get to see a lot. Especially people of their caliber just being fiercely passionate to that awesome meaningful philosophy without caring that it might just provoke a counter attack on their side that might affect their credentials, or taint their reputation but nope they just didn’t care. Which give us a hint to what they were actually loyal toward representing and what side of success they stood for, True and integral science. actually they gave mankind their best and with no fear of risking their fame and that frankly worked as a brainstorming sessions for intellectuals throughout history. And that all what it matters

So glad I found this channel. Anyways my take is that this person reminds me of Thomas Jefferson. In school I fell in love with his ideas and writings, only to be dismayed that in all practicality he was largely ignored when it came to how the USA ended up being structured. We revere him as a founder but have strayed so far from his vision.
