The U.S. Department of Justice filed a sweeping lawsuit against Apple, accusing the technology company and smartphone maker of maintaining a monopoly by unfairly squeezing out the competition. Just because you can use a third-party part, doesn't mean it'll be 100% up to snuff. I believe it depends on the phone you have. It's a newer practice, so older phones are affected less than newer ones (if I remember correctly). An example of 3p parts (or even 1p parts from another iPhone) not working is you can swap the screen but the fingerprint reader won't work. Just look it up. It's not hard. It’s more about making things worse for the consumer by making it easier to use third party messaging and payment apps so the government can easily get that information from those companies. Imagine a theft happened in your neighborhood. And they create a broad geofence warrant and texting warrants. They right now can’t really do that. But if more people used “Super App” to send messages, they could collect more info with these types of warrants. Don’t think that will happen? It already is a thing with geofence warrants. • Steam does the same thing with games, taking up to 30% but nobody says a thing.

    @alexabreuor@alexabreuorАй бұрын
    • It is not about the percentage, but that Apple doesn't allow other marketplaces and/or restrict them to the point that nobody would use them. Steam doesn't prevent games being installed from other sources in your computer, but Apple DOES it in iOS. "It will hinder innovation" is just an excuse. You can install 3rd party apps in MacOS without problems and they could very well allow the same in iOS, but they want to keep their monopoly for as long as they can.

  • Your choice Apple or Android. They are different work different. If you don’t like Apple don’t buy it. Apple products are expensive, Apple users are cultlike. Android users are just as proud. Not a monopoly but a well designed system that works. It does not have to be compatible with Android.

    • Then why do we even anti monopolistic laws? You think Tesla opened up their super chargers out of the good of their heart? Think beyond a simplistic "other companies should also create monopolies" rhetoric

  • I have a pair of Bose earbuds. My wife borrowed them and paired them with her iphone. It nearly made the headphones unusable for myself after she returned them. Weird software glitches and annoying notifications, some of which remained after unpairing with her phone and pairing again with mine. Eventually sorted things out, but it was way more difficult than it should have been. I have no evidence other than this anecdotal story, but I suspect apple intentionally messed things up. That or they wrote clunky software and I think either way it's pretty bad news.

    • Maybe user error? I used AirPods with a galaxy note 8 when it came out and they worked just fine. So they definitely didn’t lock it down and make it unusable intentionally.

    • this is headphone or user error. apple isn't hacking your headphones to suck. lol they may have stayed paired if they were not deleted from the iPhones bluetooth directory.
