But that evetyone else enjoy the benefits of the walled garden too.. just like there are things in Apple games what Android version still don't have (like controller support in Genshin Impact), and those are only possible because Apple doing things differently like Android.. so what a reat idea to force them to do things on abother way, you will only realze the mistake when you lose something what you can't get back, because of the Walled Garden is gone.. check the Android fragmentation (the Android 10 market share was almost 50% last year, now the Android 13 keep the 26% on top..) so when you need to make things what is compatible with 6 version of Android, 1000 versions of Phone that makes just too many combination to make it possible by the developers... the one OS (iOS is way less fragmented, the latest version is always rapidly downloaded by the users, i mean even if it's 1-2 weeks period, still faster like the 3-4 years for Android..) and at max 10-20 different device still way less combination to test all of them...
I'm mostly happy about this suit - it's about time Apple got held to account for this stuff - but the super-apps part of the complaint annoys me, as imho super apps themselves often lead to the exact same anti-competitive walled garden monopolies, just on the software only side. In China, if you want to text your friends, wechat is basically mandatory, just like iMessage in the US, so allowing these types of apps seems like it could negate a lot of the good this suit would otherwise cause.
Do you know why iMessage was made? Back then, when SMS was the only messaging service- Apple decided to make a software product called iMessage where through the software that they had control over. They could now send high-quality images and long texts because people had to pay per text message. iMessage a solution to a problem and was indirect consequence to the bad messaging service of SMS. Of course, this part of the lawsuit seems untimely and out of date since Apple and mostly every other phone service is switching to rcs in 2024. The fact of sending an SMS message to your carrier is a worse experience than iMessage is Apple, making SMS worse, it’s just how bad SMS is haha This part of the lawsuit is talking about how Apple made messaging worse and unsecure when it’s really SMS’s fault instead of Apple making text messaging worse.

MS does do it with plenty of their services, edge can't be deleted, Direct X only is compatible with Windows, Office hold a monopoly of document files formats, Windows cannot natively be run on no Microsoft approved ARM chips, I could keep going. Everyone just likes to complain about Apple because of how big they are.
Claiming that Apple isn't allowing superapps to exist, as if the DOJ itself would support the idea of a single app handling everything done digitally, is funny as hell.

@@randomguy-tg7ok I'll have to search even I have time (if I'm not just flat out wrong), but in the meantime it is less weird when you think about, anti trust laws aren't primarily about stopping large monopolies, they're about stopping business using success in one market to influence another. And if you control 40% of one market, you've probably got enough influence to push products in a secondary market
I gave up on iPhone back in 2015 because i couldn't fucking use bluetooth to send file to my pc. it bothered me that they limited my choices and i am very happy with android ever since.
I’m mostly on Apple, but I bought a 20 dollar android at a garage sale a while ago. That $20 phone gave me access to hundreds of hours of gaming content that Apple wholesale blocks like emulators and game mods.
bluetooth file transfer is so slow though, it can take a long time to transfer a 1+ GB file

US monopoly law doesn't say how much you need to control a market to be called monopoly. You can controll 99% of market share and still not to be called monopoly if the company didn't use the position to barring other to do business in those market. We will see do apple really obstucted other side enough to be called a monopoly or not in the future.
Another thing they lock down is their browser, even if there are apps for chrome or firefox, they are just skins and not actually chrome or firefox browsers. And it shows, Safari on iOS is constantly years behind on integrating W3C standards, or integrating them properly, they hamper the development of PWAs and their bug tracker is a nightmare for every developer. But Apple doesn't care because they don't have to compete with any other browser on iOS.
Both of my Children moved from Android to iphones because it was more difficult for them to be involved in social connections with their friends. They were missing out on small things here and there that felt like VERY large things to them. I despise apple. Manipulative and evil. I am so glad someone is doing something.
In the rest of the world Apple is rare and the problem is in reverse.
So your kids had a choice meaning that they did not have a monopoly, but chose to switch because of the product. The Apple has. Every other software company has the ability to create products to rival apples; but they just don’t and people can choose what they like more for Apple or against. As soon as government tries to step in, and tell people what they can, or cannot choose is when we have Choice taken away from us. This will trickle down to other companies as well if successful.
Wow you mean people in America are incapable of installing 3rd party messaging apps. Most of my friends use iPhones but some are android, We all use 3rd party messaging apps rather the iMessage because of it. In the EU iMessage has been dropped from its gatekeeper status due most people having groups of people that not all on iPhones so people rarely use it.
i agree! i wanted to facetime my grandma when she switched to android and i couldn't get a good visio call app to make the phone calls from abroad, apple was on purpose making it shitty from my iphone

Not true. While I dislike Apple they are not the only smartphone company in the US. Consumers willingly choose to tie themselves into their ecosystem. So within their ecosystem they are allowed to make decisions to best help their sales. The app makers are not forced to create apps for the iPhone, they choose to so that they could get access to the customers Apple has acquired. I doubt the US government will win. But we shall see. Monopolies to my & other understanding are regarded as an industry practice that removes choice for consumers or developers & Apple isn’t that. App makers could avoid Apple & be exclusively for other smartphone makers. Customers could buy other smartphones if they wish. No one is forced to obtain a IPhone or be in Apple ecosystem.

This case and the EU Digital Markets stuff is about removing the choice to buy a platform that puts users ahead of developers. If you want a developer first platform then buy an Android phone.

You've heard the video's content as well, the DOJ alleges they intentionally lower the 3rd party products' performance and enforce consumers to use specific apps, while deterring them from using others. How is that not monopolistic?
@@mr.x817 burning trust with your consumers doesn't help your company. Apple will learn that if they continue on this path. Forcing consumers to pay more for less will hurt them in the end. I've already seen lots of people leave the Apple environment for a better life outside it. If this case doesn't succeed in the US it'll likely succeed elsewhere. Considering how many app developers and banks are in the EU, it seems very likely that they'll be putting pressure on the EU to force Apple to be a more open platform for the benefit of developers and consumers. Remember there is a big difference between an app not being developed for a platform by a developer and a platform purposefully making it difficult for a app to exist on their platform in the interest of taking more money from those using that platform. Apple need to wake up to the damage they are doing to themselves.
It's always a bit weird to me that market regulators stress game streaming so much, first in Microsoft's acquisition of ABK, now with Apple, while the actual gaming press doesn't really believe in it, as most popular video games are based on timing and reflexes. Maybe market regulators are all hardcore Football Manager nerds?

You would start to literally ban everything that is acquired through money. Also it’s uni- these are adults stop hanging out with crappy people if that’s the case.
As far as digital wallets go, I absolutely do not trust. Individual app, developers, even banks to have that data on this platform. I’ve already experienced how bad mistakes banks can make.

We really should find other terms than "monopoly", as it unduly restricts litigation like this, having any company that controls over half an entire market means they have huge sway, and generally speaking we tend to have duopolies now, it can also be argued that Apple underperforms globally due to their blatantly anti-consumer practices - and for reference, I am an iOS user so I'm not just trying to rag on them over some stupid tribalistic dislike, but rather of genuine concern.
I think EU legislation calls it "Gatekeeper" now, when someone is so large, they can affect way more than just their own direct business
Monopoly means a company is big enough to dictate to the market. Nothing to do with market share necessarily. Go and look up the proper legal definition of "monopoly" instead of just using "common sense" definitions.

iPhones may not be a solid monopoly nationwide, but they aren't evenly distributed. There are lots of areas where they are almost the only type of phone anyone has, and if you live there then apple is like a monopoly

I've never been interested in trends and pop culture, so I was never tempted to buy anything from Apple. I recently revived an old V3 RAZR, and have been using that to make most of my calls. Somehow, doing so didn't cause the world to end.

This is very true that Apple is playing monopoly. I recently switched to iPhone last year from Samsung because of Apple ecosystem. I think the android interface was better than iOS, but i was forced to switch because of the integration between Apple devices like iPhone, MacBook, and iPad. The other main thing was iMessage for me because using group chat on Android was pain when other parties are on iPhone and most of my friends and co-workers were on iPhone. If Apple had played nice with Android, I would never switched to iPhone. Also, I really like Google products like Google One, Google Photos, and Google Drive compared to iCloud. These Google apps run very lame on iPhone. Google Map also doesn’t work that great on iPhone compared to Apple Map. This forced me to switch to Apple services and Apple owned-apps which I think is inferior to Google app & services. This lawsuit is beneficial for consumer market, and it will allow Android to co-exist alongside iOS.

How is imessage better than other messaging apps? I find it very hard to believe. Like animation, emoji, functionality wise, even if I get an iphone I would never use it
There should have been a bit about the warranties and repair services. They have done something similar with hardware. Specifically serialization was a bridge too far. You cant just replace your broken camera module, it needs software to allow it to work in your device. Then they have a whole scheme going where they have to authorize you to do what would be basic repairs if they didn't intentionally make it difficult.

If I remember correctly, the rule of thumb for what can be considered a functional is around 30% market share. the equation for monopoly power also doesn't bode very well for apple because we all know their sticker prices are insanely higher than the marginal cost price

problem is not the apple watch it seems, if someone has a bit tight budget and want to go for a normal one apple's ecosystem should allow usability for that 3rd party watch without intended software limitations

The fact that anyone still buys those anti-consumer, slave labour, sub-par, wall gardened devices is absolutely astounding to me.
I'm not defending Apple or downplaying things but just for your information a lot of some of your electronics are unfortunately already made by slave labour regardless if you have an Apple product or not.
I don’t want to defend them, but some of the reason, or at least for me and others that think, like me is because they prefer the accessibility features on iPhones to those on android.
No problem with Apple trying to build "stickiness" - this is essentially the spirit of capitalism and what the West subscribes to. The problem is anti-competitive behaviour, some of which are mentioned in this video. It's one thing to build an ecosystem to entice customers to stay, it's another to remove features of third-party apps and devices. The case against Apple is really, really strong. It doesn't matter Apple isn't in fact a monopoly now, it can very well be if this is allowed.

This lock-in effect and the greedy practices regarding upgrades are a shame, because at the base level, iOS and macOS are, in large parts, designed very well, and the build quality of their devices is usually excellent as well. (There are of course some stinkers in the Apple realm too, like the bendy phone)

Great information, I have a back up non-Apple watch with an app you have to download to upload all its fitness info on my iPhone, but its not a Apple Watch, and I haven't had any restrictions so I'm wondering if compatibility blocks by Apple are only with well known competitors. Apple is a monopoly, but so is Google, and Microsoft. I know Microsoft has gone through many monopoly lawsuits so it makes sense that Apple is up for a monopoly lawsuit. Every trillion/billion dollar company should be checked as consumers usually get the worst outcomes of a monopoly.

9:25 65% of the market is way more than enough to be a monopoly in all but the most literal sense of "single seller". Standard Oil never had more than 20% and the courts broke them up regardless.
This is not how monopoly work. Apple did not prevent other businesses from existing.

Signal uses a Open Source protocoll (xmp jabber) due to it being Open Source.
On android (flagship) my text convos with iphone user friends (and group convos that include iphone users) sometimes disappear, like the messages only go back a month or less sometimes, which has made me resolve that my next phone will be an iphone just to not lose text history. Pretty monopolizing and anti-consumer. In my previous attempt to switch to the iphone 12 at launch, the perimeter of the screen was unresponsive, an issue I later found a similar article about regarding a user who switched from android to an iphone 6 using the android to iphone transfer app. It seemed that in their case and mine, a bigger iphone screen was only responsive within dimensions that matched the size of the older, smaller android screen they were switching from. I don't know if the switch was the cause or the screen was defective, was thinking the latter at the time, but the genius bar said the software scans came back normal and suggested I return it (had had it less than a week) which I did. The "it just works" moniker has irked me since.
Specifically, they said I could pay $300 to replace the days old screen they claimed was perfectly functional despite my demonstrating otherwise, or return it. They also said "congratulations 😏" when I purchased it in store at launch, which I assumed they'd been instructed to say and was standard, until complaining about the patronizing tone of it to my iphone user friend who said wtf they'd stop buying iphones if someone said that to them.
I know that all those are much bigger problems then mine, but did u guys ever tryed to take ur Fotos out of an Iphone? for real, is a hurdle to save fotos on to a external drive. wtf!?
Honestly, if they allowed jailbreaking this whole lawsuit would be invalid, because it allows you to circumvent all of these limitations. But they’ll never do that because it means giving up control.

Most of the points of the lawsuit is already void as Apple have implemented or will implement many of the changes sighted before the lawsuit.
You have not mentioned that it's free to move your phone contracts & data from android to apple but if you want to move from apple to android & you have to pay.

As somebody has has moved many times between iPhones and various anroid phones, inlcuding Samsung, Pixel, Motorla, OnePlus and many others, this is a very blatant and needless lie. Why would you pay? What for? Everything transfers for free, of course you can also chose what does and what doesn't. You can transfer all data, apps and settings or none of those things. Contacts, messages and call logs including. Between both systems. Why would you lie? I prefer Android and hate Apple and their strategy, but why lie?
