    • Don't just give it a treat and stop, get its attention once attention is on you then treat him/her, then continuously give them a treat every few seconds whilst it is still around the object it is barking at, it's these treats that teaches the dog to be quiet, then next time try to add a few more seconds between each treat and so on

  • I found your site just by accident looking through KZhead. It has been very helpful. I watched it three days ago and have been applying the principles to my two dogs. The great Pyrenees weighs 124 pounds and is used to barking to protect her flock. We don’t have a flock so she just likes to bark. Our 100 pound year and a half old lab joins her and her chorus of barks. I’ve been doing the steps that you suggested and I would think that the barking has gone down over 50 percent. I will look at some of your other information to see how we could help us tighten up our obedience with the dogs. The next step I really need to have them do is to be able to come and stay by me even in a distracting situation. We are an older couple and these huge dogs can topple us over if we don’t get them trained.

  • I can take no credit for this, but we had a dog who would stop barking if you thanked him. It helped if you went to see what he was barking at. He was 2 when we got him, and either did it naturally or was trained before we got him. He was not perfect, but he was that one dog that will always be my favourite.

    • why not play with him to go into his crate, putting treats or toys in it or praising him a lot when he goes in it, first with your assistance then by himself. This playtime should take place during the day when you've got time and step by step. It may take more than 1 go but make it a pleasurable experience to go into his crate. Then try to get him to stay in it longer and longer by himself, still step by step, making it a rewarding experience each time by giving his favourite motivation tool for each success as little as it can be. Good luck! ☺

  • My dog is very well behaved. He's a year old (as of yesterday) and is pretty great when it comes to the basics: sit, stay, come, paw, lie down. If you tell him to stay, toss a treat, and ask him to ignore the treat and come, he'll do it perfectly 95% of the time, only going for the treat when given permission. However, no matter how I try to get his focus back on me, he'll still bark. If I catch him before he barks and tell him to sit, he'll sit and bark. If I pet him and praise him and give him treats when he's quiet, he'll usually bark a little less, but it doesn't stop. If I grab his muzzle and tell him "NO!" for barking, he'll switch to growling, if he stops barking at all. Now, he's a sweet pup and I know his barking is absolutely always because he wants the attention of whoever he (thinks he) hears or sees, but he's so loud that it scares people and frustrates me. No idea what to do.

    • I never sprayed water in the mouth--just at the back of his head and I said "Quiet" at the same time. It took 2 sprays and he got it. Only problem is, I have to pick up the bottle and threaten him with it each time he barks. I haven't had to spray again, but having to jump up and go show him the bottle every 10 minutes when the kids are walking home from school gets really old. Lately, I've set my phone alarm to when the kids start walking home from school and close the front door and the front blinds. He doesn't bark at what he can't' see.

  • Hi Zak - you are sooo good at this - just a suggestion though, to be even better at communicating your knowledge, which is terrifically good (and you have a great personality) :} Talking to us while you're with the dogs and showing us more of the training would be better for teach your training (the scenes are too short now) - if you don't want to do it yourself, slowing down a bit and showing us how you help an owner to develop the ability to train their dog would be really great. There is a professor, Robert Sapolsky, who teaches psychology at Stanford. He is very intelligent and talks very briskly. In his case, it works cause the knowledge the students need is communicated through speech (and even he uses visuals). Using more hands on material like an elementary school teacher would enhance your training vids a lot. Cause, in your case, your intelligence and knowledge is best communicated with hands on demonstration. Also, all the verbal instruction in the world will not create a good therapist or teacher - only working with people creates experience to be good. Being educated at Columbia Teachers' College gave me excellent intellectual material - BUT, it wasn't until I was in my own classroom, by myself, that I really learned how to teach a group of kids - and it took a while to get the knack. :} I'm looking forward to checking out more of your vids! Between you and Cesar Milan - one could become a genius with one's dog, even if with nothing else LOL - alexa :}

The dog was peeing and sh.tting in his flat and barking all the time, when he was not at home (I have to say, it was sometimes annoying even for me). But another neighbour with a little baby was complaining a lot because of that dog. I know, that he really tried to teach him, to be quiet, went out with him pretty often (he said me that 5x per day), used some methods that he saw on youtube, nothing helped. That dog was just stupid af. I dont know, where that dog ended up, but probably adopted by someone else or in a dog shelter.

And all I want to do is get back to sleep for a few more hours, because I only got 4-5 hours of sleep the previous night to get up and work another 10 hour shift at my job? Kind of like right now? Getting woke up, because neighbors are waking up to start their day, and they are making sounds outside, so she starts in on it: Laying down on that ear piercing bark, that just drills right into your core!! And now, I am up, trying to learn how to shut her the fuck up so I can get adequate sleep for my job, while right now, she is silent. Absolutely not one peep out of her.

    • Tire her out before you get her to sleep. This should give u at least an extra 2 hours of sleep and make sure you wake up for five mins every 1-2 hours to take her for a potty break if she sleep inside. If it's still a problem try take a few barking lesson as that can help ALOT. Also take into account that if it's a brand new puppy who has just been separated from it mother and/or sister,brother it is VERY common for barking and whining to occur. Hope this helped :)

    • I've found it really helps to get the timing of your last walk with her just right. Too early and they're restless all night. I take my two out on high-energy off leash walks for at least an hour a day or they'll not be tired enough and play up. Your dog may need more. If the barking is purely for attention, you MUST ignore it and not give in. Never reinforce nuisance or demanding barking.

      @TeslaNick2@TeslaNick27 жыл бұрын
    • Plenty of walks, absolutely. NEVER reward unwanted (by you) barking. Try this: a combination of positive and negative reinforcement. 1. have a spray bottle of plain water at your bedside. 2. have a handful of kibble bits at your bedside. #3. Have a light you can turn on instantly at your bedside. #4. dog barks. You turn on light and say, firmly, GOOD DOG. You toss a couple pieces of kibble. Dog eats them. You say GOOD DOG. Dog barks again. You say, firmly, ENOUGH! Dog barks again, you spritz with a stream of water. Dog shuts up for a second, you say, GOOD DOG and toss a piece of kibble. REPEAT. REPEAT. REPEAT. REPEAT. REPEAT. Dog will eventually get the idea that when you say, ENOUGH, it is to shut up or else. Don't stop giving kibble reward too soon...not until dog has been reliably shutting up on ENOUGH for a week or two at least. Then you can taper off the treats. Good luck. This DOES work but it depends on YOU doing it all one more time than the dog wants to bark. That can be hundreds of times.
