I tried installing a Ring CCTV camera security system, but found someone else owns our land!
Hi all - this week I documented how I installed a complete Ring security system to keep a watchful eye on our property because we've found someone keeps opening our gates, even though we know we've closed them! The system consists of a:
👉 Floodlight Camera
👉 Doorbell Battery Plus (which I later wired)
👉 Stick up battery cameras around the bungalow and stables
👉 Chime Pro wifi booster
And what we caught on camera was surprising!
Note, we bought all of our kit during Black Friday when Amazon had discounted them by about 40%, so keep a lookout for deals throughout the year!

Is Ring something you'd invest in, or do you think there's something better?
I'm using Arlo cameras and doorbell but TBH their monthly subscription cost is getting out of hand. I'm looking at Reolink with no need for subscription.
My ring subscription was £25 a year when I first got the doorbell, I was happy with that and also purchased the alarm system a year later. First they put the price up to £35 per year which was annoying but I accepted it because it kept footage for longer. This year it will be increasing to £50 per year for no other reason than blatant profiteering. I'm canceling it before renewal and no longer buying any of their products. I would urge others to do the same because they'll keep increasing prices if we accept it. Lesson learned
@@fishgrimsbythis is the problem with cloud subscriptions. The alternative is you have an on site recorder but then you’ve got to factor in the burglar could steal that and your recordings are gone and it cost power to run it. If it runs at around 20 watts per hour then it’s going to cost you about £50 per year in electric at 29p per kWh.
TCD, I’d be tempted to look at the reolink 180 deg cameras as they can be run through Power over Ethernet so you only need to run a network cable, no mains to go wrong, have 180 degrees of vision and are not Amazon so not going to put up the subscription and show you adverts (kidding about the adverts) Paul Hibbert recently did a review on a 180deg camera recently so worth checking out there are a few on the market.
@@davideyres955I get that, but thanks for giving an example alternative with some figures. My point is more to do with the fact that Amazon have increased the subscription cost 100% over the span of a few years which isn't acceptable, and as they like to increase profit year on year it probably won't stop. People should be aware and look at products from other companies, subscription price increases are ultimately inevitable but not to that degree.
I’m a sparky, you’ve made the same mistake everyone makes, on the first light you fitted you put the cable grip on the inner cores of the t&e, they are meant to go on the grey insulation as you are at risk of damaging the cores of the cable the way you have done it, not hard to go back and fix but it needs to be done properly especially as you are putting on the internet for all to see and use as a guide for fitting theirs 👍🏿

Also at 14:49 when she was making the cable 'hooks' for the screws on the back, I think she wound the wire the wrong way so it wasn't following the turn of the screw, meaning it was going against the wind of the wire and would naturally loosen as opposed to naturally getting tighter around the screw when the screw was tightened.
Yes I agree but the makers of a lot of electrical do not always leave space for this to happen, all wiring should be inspected by a professional before use as per uk laws
@@jimstelfox6120 I had a professional install my kitchen wiring, he gladly left the oven connected to the ring main. Even when I'd asked him to change to it's own fed from the consumer unit. I eventually managed to get him to wire it safely and as per regulations, as he would not listen to me when told time and time again. That a 4.8 Kw oven was never to be connected to the ring main.
@@jimstelfox6120 I get inspecting the main power but the UK requires inspection for low voltage as well?
For boosting external wifi, I'd suggest running an ethernet cable up into the loft from your router and set up a power point up there. You can then run a series of access points internally if you want better wifi inside but more importantly externally use Ubiquiti UAP-AC-M (mounted as high as you can externally) I find externally I get a wifi signal upto around 100m from the house. You can also run them in mesh if you want signal further from the house.
Hard wire the lot with POE. Wifi drops out just when you need it.
@@UberAlphaSirusnot so easy when they're not in the same building. One of my cameras (which is ethernet only) is connected to the main network via one of the UAP-AC-M in mesh and it's rock solid. There's a big difference between the WIFI you get from a ISP router and a setup like the ubiquiti systems provide.
I weighed up all the pros & cons of different types of cameras and after lots & lots of research POE recording onto a NVR was what I went for. A lot of money up front but by far the best system for me. Obviously all hard wired with CAT 6 cable but no subscription required and I can view whilst away from my property as well.
Hey Vikki I’ve got the ring doorbell too and it’s really easy to use and very effective. Seeing you using the cameras has helped me as I’ve been thinking of getting one for inside my workshop and the garden too so I’ll definitely check them out. One thing I would say is that I quickly bought a spare battery for the doorbell as I found when it needs charging you obviously can’t use it so I always keep one battery charged and just switch them when the bell is low. As for your Wi-Fi signal don’t buy those crappy plugin boosters as they halve your bandwidth. I bought a mesh system with three discs that allow for signal in the workshop so it’s way better. The one I got was BTWholehome. Not cheap but worth the expense. Looking forward to seeing you in May if you’re going to maker’s xx
Interesting setup! I have a badger track through my garden too. I've been looking into these kind of cameras recently, but I would only use IP cameras that require no subscription. For the last few years I have had dashcam cameras at the front and back, which work well. Cost £30 each, virtually zero running cost.
we have a camera on our front porch and it's interesting to see what wildlife is visiting. During the day it's usually a squirrel and in the evening the neighbours kitty pops over for a scout around. lol
Brilliant work Vikkie and Mr tcd, Get a TPLINK Wi-Fi extender, you plug it in where it’s in range in the house nearest to the barn for example, let it set itself up and you’re done, they are about £20… How beautiful seeing the foxes and badgers truly wonderful 😊
We have all tapo items smart plugs smart lights & CCTV we have 4k hard wire cctv & the tapo is better that that

We have a ring doorbell but what I was disappointed about was the monthly subscription, which spoilt it for me as we don't want any extra financial burden of a subscription.. So we lost some useful features. We have another 'free' to use security camera setup, the ring doorbell is just really a means to answer the door when we're not in...😊

Yes, I was just watching this and screaming that she should be going for a proper NVR and POE cameras. Wifi and batteries always have problems when you need them, also a wifi jammer is a thing now and burglars are starting to use them. As most of the cameras are close to the roof you would only need to run most of the cables up there and a single cable to your main home network and you are sorted. You would have much better camera quality and easily view at least eight at once. I'm not even sure it is much more expensive. For the barn, you may have to rely on wifi, but if you do have power out their you could use a powerlink setup and then POE connect cameras there too.
Reolink system is very good. Affordable, feature rich, scale-able and most important subscription free. Also compatible with Amazon Echos

Nice work. Next time go with Reolink as their cameras are awesome and with their new duo 3 16MP POE 180 degrees FOV you can see it all 😊. Their 5MP WiFi wired doorbell is also amazing. All their wired cameras have people,pet, vehicle detection.

Nice video, all good info there. My choice for getting the wifi down to your outbuildings would be a Point to Point (PtP) bridge. Having tried wifi boosters and mesh systems before myself, I wouldn't bother with these. They rely on the existing wifi signal and then repeat it. If that repeater does not reach then you'll need another (or more) along the route. As long as you can get an ethernet cable to the bridge then this is a far better way of doing it. The signal can travel several miles as long as it has line of sight. The one I use is the Ubiquiti Nanostation 5ac loco. You will need 2 of them (transmitter and receiver). Once you've beamed the signal down there you can set up a completely separate wifi network if you want.
I use ring products. However, it wasn't long before I hard wired everything. Charging the batteries became a pain in the arse, and the screws on the doorbell for releasing it wore out quite quickly. I am frustrated that it is a subscription service, though.
Well they do last about a year when new , but usually people have spares to replace whilst charging them , this would be a bit costly in buying extra batts thou. Still a good video mind. 👍
Tiny tip (and not worth putting right in this case) ....... The Security Light / Camera. When you wire in eather T+E or Flex the strip you screwed on last was a tension bracket. It is supposed to go over the outer insulation of the cable. I know, no room, but if you put a small loop of the inner cable in it allows you to fit it and gives that little bit extra (just in case). As I said not important on this, but good to know for future events! There are two ways (usually) to extend your Wi-Fi. 1. Boosters ...... Just plug in to a socket half way and your signal will go further (but you do lose bandwidth) 2. New (better) router. Routers provided by the IP are the cheapest they can get away with so look for bigger, better ones. I used to have this problem a my home but changed my supplier (better deal) and was provided with an Eero unit by my new IP. This punches through two double brick external walls with impunity ..... Eldest Child is eternally grateful, or at least has stopped his wails of anguish when the old signal dropped out several times a day! So not all routers are equal! We even have 5G on this beast saving a small fortune on phone data! They have written to me thinking I run a business from it though ...... No! Just 2 kids and a Wife! ;o)
You will need cameras for the bird feeder or nests as well to catch those cheeky robins. 😊

Strongly recommend the TP Link Deco mesh WiFi systems. They come at a range of price points depending on which features you need but a three pack costing around £100 easily covers my house and garden.
German Shepard is great security system, but does sleep a lot! LOL.

Hi, I have several ring battery cameras too, but on a two story house the batteries were a pain, invested in the solar panels for them, not cheap from ring, but work well. After market ones are available, but I'm not sure how good they are. Just like one of the other comments, the wireless cameras can be disarmed with a radio jammer, but it would have to be a serious thief to go that far. Overall ring are fairly good, I have had issues occasionally when they decide not to connect. But fitting a mesh wifi system did help. All the best looking forward to your future projects.
I will suggest that you get an extra camera battery or two. Then you have one fully charged one to swap into a camera when the installed one gets low. No need for the slow 'remove, charge, replace' dance.
We have a Ring Video Doorbell and a few cameras dotted around the back garden and workshop, we also have door/window sensors and PIR detectors linked to the Ring Alarm....we think it is a great system!
For the doorbell you could have just extended the existing wires with some basic bell wire as a temporary measure. Until you redo all the wiring properly in future to make it look nice. It's only low voltage and saves you the hassle of battery charging.
Great job Vikkie but as you mentioned you could have taken that terminal block off the light and just used wago connectors,I have an Aosu door bell and it's great as the chime comes with a micro sd card to save the video footage so you don't have to pay for cloud storage

For wifi extension I can recommend from personal use the TP-Link EAP110-Outdoor. Has everything in it you need and if you locate it in the correct place will mean that you won't need to move your camera.
Did you consider knocking it down and starting again for the VAT benefit plus everything else from new build?
We have ring cameras all over the outside of our house, we have just got a stickup camera with a solar panel so we don’t have to worry about charging it or where to put the wiring. We have WiFi boosters for the cameras that are far away from the router.
Hiya, Vikki we use Riolink CCTV camera's (poor man's option) and we need to do the same as you by installing a camera away from our existing wifi signal. After alot of swearing,alchol & headache tablets we bought a TP Link Mesh system (as we were have to boost our wifi within our property anyway) adding one of the Nodes to the rear of the property which in turn boosted the wifi signal to the cctv camera that we were having the problem with and it is working fine now, also i can now watch your great video's in my out building ; )
We have a TP-LINK Deco M5 mesh wifi setup with 4 nodes that cover the house, office & workshop. Very easy to set up and it just works. It's nice to have stable, uninterupted wifi everywhere in the house & garden. From personal experience, mesh wifi would be my reccomendation.

Good bit of kit and the battery last a good time, it's the screws are bit awkward, specially with chunky fingers 😁
One tip I could offer is that when you are screwing things up using the electric drill/impact driver is that you can easily strip the rawl plugs/hole etc due to the power of the drill. Personally I use a small ratchet from a socket set with a small extension bar and the adapter for screw bits. I use the electric drill/driver for the main tightening and then the ratchet for the last few turns so that it doesn't strip the rawl plug/hole, but you can still get some good torque/control on the screw, and it's better than a manual screwdriver for this. This is also handy if you find yourself with a difficult hole that has been stripping the heads of the screws from the power of the electric drill/driver.
Or a drill/driver with a clutch

Ring doorbells or similar, not for me, most delivery drivers just bang on the door anyway after dropping the parcel in the porch. A few neighbours have alarms which when activated nobody takes any notice, police aren’t interested.
Wait till they mist up in the damp weather then ring advises not to mount above grass glad to get rid of them much better makes out there

Looks like you have every angle covered! It's worth bearing in mind that monitoring cameras live will shorten the battery life on a charge. I only have a doorbell currently and tbh thats just for parcels when I'm working in my office at the bacvk of the house or working on a project in the garage. I went with Eufy as it's subscription free but stores the footage on a hub inside the house rather than an SD card in the camera itself. It's pretty good but well worth reading up on and making your own mind up as there was a security concern with footage being uploaded to a server (in China) If you have thumbnails enabled with notifications and that server was pretty easy to get into. For me I'm not too bothered as it only shows out the front of the house which is straight onto the street, I probably wouldn't have any of their cameras inside the house. I may add a camera to the garage to keep an eye on my motorbike but otherwise I already see too much of the neigbours I don't need a live feed of them to my phone as well! 😂
The problem with wifi security cameras is that thieves have learned to use wifi blockers to disable them. You're better off with wired cheap PoE cameras and a self hosted NVR such as Frigate.
Exactly. A cheep £50 all in one pc running freenas/truenas and frigate. All your storage, no subs, no spies. Cost's 1/4 the price.

@@Ragnarrok2023I bought a "HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Desktop Mini" from Amazon for about 125 pounds, with 16GB RAM and 512GB disk. It is an ex-business PC, a few years old and more than powerful enough to handle a couple of PoE cameras. BlueIris is an alternative to Frigate that is quite good too. It runs on Windows but you need a license for it. Cameron Gray has a recent YT video where he sets up some cameras with BlueIris
@@Ragnarrok2023 You don't need to get an all in one. Almost any old PC will do depending on the number and resolution of the cameras. My 12 year old HP Compaq with an early i7 easily handles eight Dlink cams at 480 plus two at 1080. The 500 GB hard drive will hold 45 days of motion-activated footage for three cameras, 22 days for six cams, 15 days for 9, etc. Many TVs have a VGA port for the display. Something new isn't required, but if it is, LEDs are cheap these days. If you don't need remote viewing, it doesn't matter much which version of Windows you have security wise, as long as the software is compatible. To be clear though, I'm not recommending Dlink. Their cameras are okay but their customer service doesn't appear to exist. Check around for a computer shop that resells old office PCs. You should be able to get something decent for cheap with a fresh OS install plus guidance for your particular needs.
It all looks great - so incredible to catch wildlife too - not sure how to do that on mine - we have so many foxes here - Mine is definitely higher than 1.2 metres - totally should have read the instructions haaaaaa
You might want to look up your model of Wifi router as most makers have wifi extenders that are available to work with it.

Cheap way to boost signal is to get a access point and connect your existing router to the access point using a ethernet cable. On the access point you can use the same WiFi Name and Password as your current router. Good way to increase internet coverage in the home and garden.
Nice videos of your latest project - However, be careful because, although we may love badgers, they also love routing about for worms etc. especially in soft soil of raised beds - I've had my beds and vegetables destroyed by badgers over the years. Even my neighbour's lawn looked like a ploughed field every morning until he fenced it off.

I think the only way is to fence it off - However, before going through that expense maybe you could take a chance and see how it goes. I'd fill them up first (obviously lol) and see how it goes. If there's any evidence of digging then the only way forward will be a sturdy fence. It's just something to bear in mind because it can be very disheartening. @@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
I used a mesh system to give us Wi-Fi coverage all over our thick walled cottage and workshop and garage.
IT geek here. Regarding the stables, running an Ethernet cable there (say cat7) is your best bet. WiFi is pretty unreliable (and can be potentially jammed). If you’re getting your house rewired I’d run shielded Ethernet everywhere. Alternatively, if your stables have electricity supplied from your house then you can run internet over your power supply (called power line adapters). That will be almost as good as hard wired ethernet
I think all the Ring cameras are wifi only. There is nothing to plug an ethernet cable into. You could use it to power a remote wifi access point though and connect that camera to that network for a stronger signal.
Install outdoor access point(s) to boost the signals. Make sure its POE. Alternatively use Powerline Adaptors with built in wifi. Dont buy boosters or repeaters, they are rubbish. For general CCTV your better off using wired for the best connection.
There are two choices, wireless extenders and repeaters. Extenders are largely for internal use and probably dont have the range and tend to be built into a plug. A repeater is a point to point device which is focussed and directional - this is very important as we have a power limit on UK devices, so to get the range you need a narrow beam.These are waterproof and more likely to meet your needs. I dont have a current model. But I will check and post information if I can find a UK one.

Text only no link.WAVLINK AC600 Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Access Point, Outdoor WiFi Extender Ideal for Garden with Passive Poe/Weatherproof/Flexible Installation, Dual Band 5G + 2.4G This is a repeater/ access point with aerials that can be aimed in the right direction. It is very confusing as wireless names are interchangeable. If it looks like plug then it's a indoor one. There are others that are more discreet than the one above. At least the above can give you some idea of what your looking for, that about £70 I think.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUKAnother thought is, if you have power in the barn, use ethernet powerlink plugs to get wired ethernet in the barn and then add a wifi access point to that. Would give you much better wifi around the barn on all sides.
Hi TP link wifi booster are good and you can hard wire them or your Internet provider may sed you wifi disc boosters for a cost but they work well we have a Tp link and it covers a blindspot in our house and gives us full signal.
What resolution are your cameras ? bet it's 720p (low res) you really need 4K to see far off details (car rego plates etc)
We have a Yale system its all wireless bar the Cameras that work off it are usb plug I had to fit USB sockets for the camera but there are no fees Not looked at ring but the camera's are quite smaller looking with integrated light and siren

We have the ring doorbell but the lag from the doorbell ringing to it notifying me on my phone is shocking. I was debating the Chime Pro but wasn't sure if it would make it much better. Would love to know others opinions x
Agreed.
It's much easier to attach the new cable to the old one and pull the new cable back through the hole. That twin & earth looks a bit too heavy duty for this job. It's not dangerous but, as you've found, it's difficult to get into switches, terminals etc. And also harder to route around obstacles.
Bought and installed four of these a few months ago and love them.
I needed to boost my Wi-Fi signal to my workshop as my Alexa location is as close to the house as possible but wouldn't pick up signal inside however if i took it to the other side of the wall outside it worked fine so frustrating lol anyway I used a TP Link plug in Wi-Fi extender and now it works fine inside the workshop👌
consider having your flood lights on a motion sensor. having bright lights on all night is not good for humans or wildlife and contributes to the lack of dark sky. migrating birds use the stars to move along the sky at night :)

How did you test for dead?
My ring door bell has been awful (Cheapest model). I get notifications 30 seconds after they should occur. Its not my wifi I even tested with an access point right next to the thing. I don't pay for their storage. Maybe that's the issue.
Have a look and see if the furthest device is using 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. It should be using the 2.4 GHz bandwidth as that gives greater distance. If you don’t have 2.4 GHz then you have to go into your router settings and split the SSID so that it enables the 2.4 GHz, then reconnect the devices to the 2.4 GHz bandwidth.
I bought security cameras as dodgy stuff was going on behind our old house. We now back into a canal and it's all wildlife. I've even installed one inside a bird box 😂

I'm going to point out: Check all the small print ( Terms and Conditions ) on Ring cameras and the like as in the last few years there's been serious controversy on the access of data: sound and vision via the creators of Surveillance equipment and it's use/access by the Authorities in legal action/s!!!!

Unifi or Reolink is also a good option. Edit: Unifi also has options for boosting your wifi.
Add a mesh WiFi system: I have the tp link mesh system which is great in my house as means my man cave end of the garden which is what 30 feet from the house gets me on the WiFi. If not talk to your service provider as some will send you a faster router or like virgin plug in wall boosters:

I had a similar system to operate the main gate and monitor the less secure areas of my garden. Within a week it had been stolen ... NB I'd be very wary of anything Amazon. It's constantly listening and will dob you in to the cops should it hear the wrong thing.
There is no point stealing a Ring camera because it cannot be transferred to a new owner until the previous one has deregistered it.
@@silver_stained Thieves often have no clue what they are stealing, if it can be moved, it's gone. As to Amazon products, mine wasn't - the same applies to Kindles and, to some extent, iPads. They still get nicked.
That is why many wildlife critters have claws, so they can have a free hold on the land.

Nice work. I have Reolink devices which are battery powered, but also came with a solar charging panel and mount which generally perform well. I had four of these camera at one point, but over three years, two have gone faulty. These were inexpesnive devices at the time, but if you buy cheap you buy twi ce lol.

Alternatively just loosen the first screen rotate the plate out of the way then drill the second hole. Save wasting those precious few minutes looking for the plate you just put down but managed to disappear!
You may even catch an unscrupulous postie or delivery driver taking a leak on your driveway 😵💫 this has happened a few times though not on camera as it's a bit too far away from the house to catch - I caught an Amazon driver doing it as I happened to return on my bike and had the camera on as I confronted him on audio - he was apologetic when caught, but assumed no one would see it even though there's a toilet at the petrol station across the road - Amazon were also very apologetic when I sent them the footage...🤨

I did note the door handle on your door is not very secure and perhaps you should look at changing it also.
Isn't it better to drill into the mortar rather than the house bricks? That way it wont leave a hole in the house bricks when it is eventually removed or replaced. Mortar is easy to repair, bricks are not.
I've not always found this the case. Especially when mortar has been too soft for a hold.

Why not DIY your IT infrastructure (self-host it)? In addition to all the usual DIY benefits you also get the performance benefits, stability, no monthly costs and trust. It is your own data you are giving away after all.
I wouldn't touch ring unless you don't care about your privacy. They also don't need permission to take your feeds or even watch them. You data is also not secure on the servers.

Why didn't you attach some cord to the old wire, pull it through, wire up the camera, then attach your new wire to the cord and pull it through to the loft.
Or just attach the new to the old? Saves a step.
