I genuinely don't think Murray even did much wrong in this match, just a devastating display of all court tennis from Federer. Probably the best example of the 'he could beat you every way possible' thing

Great performance from Fed, this was probably the end of his prime. The work on the backhand to drag Murray off the court was marvelous.

Yep. And the thing that nobody acknowledges is that - nobody stepped up to challenge those two. Since 2010 tennis has had a steady decline in talent. That's just a fact. A lot of good players but no great players. Between 2010 and 2019 we had an entire decade where only 2 other guys won Slam. If not for the lack of great talent then the 3 of them wouldn't each have 20+ Slams. The best athletes these days simply just do not choose tennis, can't afford tennis or have never had the opportunity to be exposed to it. Frankly they have cheaper options with sports that pay more money.
@@jollymolly2521 I personally don't agree. Novak and Rafa are once in a lifetime type of players with their consistency and longevity. The same questions about the level of competition didn't arise earlier due to sampras agassi or even the legends before then not dominating across surfaces for years. Murray, stan, delpo, thiem, Medvedev, zverev or even tsonga, Ferrer, Gonzalez, davydenko would have won slams in that era of tennis. And if you see the matches except Rafa on clay, there is not that much of a difference between Nole Rafa and the rest of the competition. It's just their clutchness and focus when it's matters the most! That's the differentiator!
@@jollymolly2521 Are you saying Fed played against stronger opposition between 2003-2010 or that Nadal and Djoko took advantage of his declining (but still often high-quality) game from the 2010s on? For my part, I believe Djokovic benefitted the most from the Fed's "decline" in the 2010s, especially over 5 set matches. Sure, Fed was still capable of beating him (RG2011, Wimbledon2012), but the difference in their ages, Djokovic's improved stamina and relentlessness and, perhaps most importantly, the huge difference in the "match-miles" (Fed must have had at least 3 times as many as Djoko by 2011) is what allowed Djoko to _just about_ beat Fed in the slams and in some of their really tight matches. It's why I think the "in-match" stats between the two are so telling. Fed trails 23-27, but leads or is equal in these five categories: points dominance (1.02), games dominance (1.01), total points won = 50.2%, total games won = 50.4%, total sets won = 50%. It shows that Fed was able to stay with and even outplay the Djoker "in match", all the way up to AO 2020, their last match. He just lost the ability to "close" the match as he grew older and Djoko grew more confident about Fed's propensity to get nervous. Also - *there is **_no_** other rivalry in tennis history, especially of such a long duration, where the player who's lost more has all these stats in their favour.* It's really quite remarkable and provides an insight into the type of player the Fed was, all the way up to the very end. The more "superficial" win-loss and total titles records won't reflect any of this, but those who've watched their matches, both the ones before 2011 (19) and the ones after (31), know that the match was on the Fed's racket 8 out of 10 times. They also know that Djoko began to win when - 1) Fed began to decline (relatively, of course) and 2) when Djoko stopped trying to beat Fed at his own game (he used to go into the forecourt and volley and all that much more in their early matches) and decided to become a full-time baseline attritionalist, who waited for Fed to make the error...which he did more and more frequently. On those days he didn't (usually in 3 set matches), not only did Djoko lose, he was often blown away, e.g. Cincy 2012, Shanghai 2014, Cincy 2015, and WTF 2019.

There's never been a better show in tennis than Roger Federer in full flight. The forehand, the serve, the backhand, the defense, the insane footwork and crazy shot making from anywhere on the court? That's why I call it "Roger Porn." Still, I feel sorry for Andy Murray. In another era he probably would have won 7 or 8 Grand Slams instead of 3.
Yessir! And there will _never_ be a better show. Because a sport only gets one chance to incarnate itself and, luckily for us, it incarnated itself in the Fed. He single-handedly elevated the game, by creating and revealing a new aesthetics for it. He also, in his golden period from 2004-2009, *was simultaneously its most prolific winner, greatest shotmaker, and aesthetic touchstone.* Fed is the *only* other athlete in _any_ individual sport to have ever done this. That he did it in a sport as physically and athletically demanding as tennis is what makes it even more astonishing. He is Mr. Tennis and the sport's forever and irreplaceable gold standard. Tennis will go on, but it will never be the same with Fed. He was the rarest of rare things: a never-before-never-again phenomenon. P.S: Want to hear something funny? I commented on another video about Fed being the only athlete who was simultaneously winner and aesthetic touchstone and someone countered with...Phil Taylor. 🙃 I didn't know what to say...and so I didn't say anything.

Yes! Like someone said a few months ago, once Fed retires, *_every_** one of his matches (from 1998-2021) should be uploaded **_in full_** and in the highest quality available.* (Ideally, they should do it for free but they could even charge a small fee if they wanted to and millions of people would pay.) It's the least Tennis TV can do for a player who single-handedly elevated the sport and whose like we will _never_ see again.

Murray was so poor in this match. He didn't play bad but his tactics were inviting trouble the whole time. Such short balls on both the FH and BH side. Federer was always going to capitalise!
