  • Thank you for including deep dives in power consumption in all of your reviews. Lots of people may not care about them but it makes a real difference when one part is significantly more expensive to run while also being harder to cool for marginal improvements in performance. Especially for production work like in Blender, Intel is indeniably better in a lot of scenarios but the power required is so huge it makes it hard to like. Hoping the chiplet architecture comes to desktop from them soon, a low end meteor lake i5 apparently beats the 7640HS while using 15w instead of 45w so it's promising

    @deneguil-1618@deneguil-16187 ай бұрын
    • There will be no meteor lake “i5” remember Intel changed their branding of CPUs to core 5.

      @somebodyrandom2800@somebodyrandom28007 ай бұрын
    • @@somebodyrandom2800it's still the same thing. I believe their new marketing is however more misleading, because core count is a totally different thing than product line branding and I will refuse to say "core 5", when it's actually a 6+8 core configuration... It's just bad. They could have called it anything, yet chose "core", a word that already has a meaning.

  • Thanks for the review! People may not care about power consumption, but like you said, the cost of the coolers, the trouble of worrying about your cooler and PSU being enough... That's meaningful to me, personally. I am biased since I care a lot about power consumption, though. And yeah, you can run this CPU cooler by tuning it. But if you lose any of that 3% gain over the 13900K, what's the point of spending more? So, I hope these are actually better-binned or better-built CPUs, where the efficiency lets you hit good performance even when undervolting or setting a lower wattage limit. Otherwise this really is just a higher factory overclock, which would be silly as the basis of an entire refresh line. The added E-cores lower down in the 14th gen CPU stack are the only stand-out thing that could make a large difference compared against 13th-gen. But that's not in every part, only a couple get more E-cores. Anyway, it's still going to be some time until Arrow Lake, so yeah, intel wants to stock those shelves with higher-priced CPUs for the holiday season... Oh well. Like you said, at least it doesn't perform worse than 13th gen. (Unless it turns out harder to tame to lower wattage than 13th gen, in which case it would actually be a worse product for me, since I care about efficiency. I doubt it, but those out-of-the-box numbers are actually concerning, so I'll believe it when I see someone try and tune them. I won't buy it just to mess around with it, I don't have extra money to waste on 3% performance gains or "for science".)

    @MrSmitheroons@MrSmitheroons7 ай бұрын
  • What I really appreciate in the review is the power consumption values at higher resolution, since independently of AMD or Intel, most reviewers just strap the power at 1080 normally with a 4090 , what does not represent actual use for more than 90% of the audience of those reviews. Going from almost 300 watts at 1080 to 160 at 4k is like halving the consumption . ps, I also advise anyone that buys either the 14900 or the 14700 to fiddle with the bios settings and limit power, particular in Asuss and MSI mb, and if possible undervolt , since apparently that will result in negligible performance loss (that can even be 0 at higher resolution) in exchange of temperature drops of up to 20 degrees and around 30% reduction in consumption.

    @Solrac-Siul@Solrac-Siul7 ай бұрын

It’s generally smoother when you look to the side and see other cars and scenery as well. Everything is running stock, so just giving you my thoughts about it. I’m obviously not affiliated with Intel and I I’m definitely gonna go with the full AMD in my next build …using asus hero maximus and 4090 latest speed/latency ddr5. Anyway, just wondering your thoughts because I realize that the frame rate differences are the same across bench test - do you think it’s the VR? Latency and frame rate improvements.

  • Power draw seems a bit scary on these newer Intel chips - and not just on the i9. I just upgraded from a 12600K to a 14700KF yesterday and with default BIOS settings and no OCing whatsoever, that thing drew up to 330 Watts peak in one CPU benchmark. Cinebench 24 wasn't quite as ludicrous but still pretty ludicrous at 270 to 300W. Since I'm on a 240mm AiO and not about to upgrade to a 360 just to run benchmarks, I went into the BIOS and reduced PL1 and PL2 to 253W (default on my board was 4000-something/no limits) and things got a lot more manageable with temps staying below 80°C - and performance only dropped very slightly in CPU benchmarks. Funny thing is that, according to XTU, going higher on the power-limits didn't result in performance gains. I let XTU set PL1/2 to 300W and max current to 400A ("quick auto optimization") and according to XTU's internal benchmark, results were identical to the lower, 253W, setting. Temps and power-draw went up though, so I just left it there and slightly raised the current limit to 360A. Even at the medium, 288 or 285W preset on my board, max current would've been 500A. Should've done a bit more reading, I guess, since I never had anything faster than i5 level of performance.. :D

    @1SaG@1SaG6 ай бұрын
    • Is that below 80°C in gaming or even benchmark? I'm thinking about getting the i9 or 7950x3d and basically for the i9 I'm afraid of thermals (have good airflow and meshed side panel with the option for extra fans supplying straight fresh air to the radiator), but only space for 240mm AIO. And for the 7950x3d I am afraid of Ram compatibility, as it seems that it struggles with high clock speeds and potentially high capacity. And I want 96GBs of DDR5-6000

    • Both are very good at both, it'll really come down to how many hours of on-time / light use time you'll do as well (where Intel wins a bit), and how much your power costs as well (AMD becoming relatively more interesting as power rates go up). Also going AM5 will let you upgrade your CPU next year, maybe even in two years. 14th gen will mean a future upgrade will require a new board. But I don't really think there is a wrong option there either.

  • Thanks for including higher res as most people will not be gaming on 1080p especially with a 4090. I went with a 13900K a few months ago as I knew the 14th gen wasn't going to be much of a change and will be at a higher price as well. Intel isn't going to discount the 13th gen that much as that will alienate their 14th gen CPUs which would be a nightmare for them. I wanted to initially go with a 7800X3D or 7950X3D but I wanted to run faster DDR5 ram speeds. AMD was having issues with their RAM this year as well so I just didn't want to deal with it even though I like their lower power usage vs Intel which I'm not a fan of. It was just a little more to get a 13900K for me over the 7800X3D and when you balance out the higher cost of the M/B + RAM overall for AMD it was around $75 more to go Intel. The 7950X3D is a much more expensive CPU and I didn't want to pay that much to have less gaming performance than the 7800X3D.

I had mine on and it made the cpu draw up to 450W in very small bursts and push all P-cores to 5.8Ghz. After I have disabled it the max power draw doesn't go over 300W at all and it's cooler. • I have to agree with Moore's Law is Dead and his video from last night.....Arrow Lake better be a STUNNING improvement. We already know they are going to get a huge boost from using either TSMC 3nm or their 20A (2nm) process; depending on which leak is correct I guess. But dropping hyperthreading.....AMD hasn't done that. AMD has some great products out now, but Intel needs to stay competitive so as not to have another "Kaby Lake" situation, but with the companies switched this time. Thanks for the review.

    @mattirealm@mattirealm7 ай бұрын
    • Considering they basically skipped a generation now since this are just rehashes of improved silicon then they better be working on something good since they need so much time. TSMC 3nm though isn't proving that great if we go by the new iphone chip. The 3nm didn't show much improvement for consumption and power on that chip. Most improvement came from the architecture improvements. I also heard TSMC is still struggling with their 3nm both on yield and make it perform as it wants. If Intel isn't doing anything better with their 20A then things aren't looking good but if they are then that may give them that extra card they need against AMD since after AMD sold their faps they have no alternative other than TSMC(there's Samsung also but those guys are even worse). AMD better be praying TSMC gets on top of their 3nm issues until their next launch.

  • Actually, you can reduce maximum power consumption significantly without losing performance by approriately adjusting LLC and AC/DC loadline. If you do so, 12900K, 13900K, and 14900K turn into efficient CPUs for light and moderately demanding tasks owing to their number of e-cores.

    @osardegozar2581@osardegozar25817 ай бұрын
    • You can definitely tweak them for improvements, might be something for follow up content. But 10nm Intel won't magically outperform 5nm TSMC/AMD in terms of efficiency.

    • @@TechTesters I agree. That's certainly correct at such a general level, and I was not contesting such a general statement in any way. I qualified situations/use cases where 12/3/4900K can become efficient. Let me elaborate what I suggested a bit more: a voltage curve tuned 12/3/4900K can be efficient in such a situation as processing light-load tasks in the foreground and processing moderate or somewhat heavier tasks in the background, leaving them to e-cores. For instance, you may work on a WORD document while converting your PPT slide into an .mp4 file in the background. You may browse the web while running an app in the background that performs demanding calculation on data constantly received from an external source.

Both are super fast, sometimes Intel a bit faster, sometimes AMD a bit faster, etc. But AMD runs so much more efficient and you need less of an overkill cooler. If you use your CPU for work and gaming a lot, AMD makes sense imho. But if you use your PC all day every day for light work, and then only game / do heavy work a little bit, Intel will make more sense. Either way you're in for a big upgrade :)
