Yep, cowboyin' ain't all glamour & gunfights. I had an uncle that decided he wanted to be a cowboy on a working ranch and let's say that Hollywood misled him. Great episode, Santee!

Me,too. In the early 80s I was on a relative's oil/cattle ranch & it was eyeopening.Dirt bikes instead of horses to herd with & the camp cook didn't know what the Hell he was doing.Thank God we could ride to McDonalds.
I have a nephew that lives in Northern Utah. He's in his 40s now but from the time he was 17 to about 22 he worked as a ranch hand in Wyoming. That kid is the real deal.
My father's brand was "Lazy S O" and I always said that since I was his only Boy, I was going to register "Lazy S O B" but I became a doctor instead of a rancher.
HAAH!
One branding iron I saw growing up in Colorado was a '2' followed by a '2' on its side and then a 'P' . I was told it meant 'too lazy to pee'. Not sure if it was a real brand or just a joke.

Not about branding, but about herding cattle with patrol cars. Many moons ago as a young police officer working night shift at Clemson University, cattle escaped from the dairy farm. We laboriously herded them back using lights, sirens and spotlights. They bottlenecked at the gate. At the gate was an old character cop, kind of like Fish from Barney Miller. As soon as they got to him the cattle picked up a trot and literally sprinted through. "Hey W.W." I asked, "How did you get them to go in?" "I sang to them," he replied.
That is a really cool memory, Greg! I wish I coulda been there.

My mother is grew up on a farm in northern New South Wales. Growing up in an old Victorian house in San Francisco my friends would comment on our branding iron by the fireplace. Our family's farm brand was D.R. , for "David Rankin". Now the cattle wear plastic tags on their ears. Of course us kids would brand the under and backsides of all the furniture...

Thanks again Santee & Co. I was in the navy as an Operations Specialist . Every enlisted rating has a symbol they wear on their sleeve and is a pictiogram of the wearers' job . For instance , crosed anchors is Boatswain's Mate . crossed cannons is Gunner's Mate , a ship's wheel is Quartermaster , a rangefinder with lightning bolts is Fire Controlman , etc . Add wings to the symbol and you have the aviation version of the rating , such as Aviation Boatswain's Mate . This video made me consider that sailors wear a brand of sorts . I'm glad I didn't have to come under a red hot iron , though . My ' brand " was an oscilloscope with an arrow , symbolizing direction and rangefinding via radar . Next time you see some sailors in their dress uniforms , try playing a game by looking at the symbol on their left sleeve and guess their job . Guess these jobs : 1 two snakes on a winged staff , 2 a pair of headphones and an arrow , 3 a flaming bomb with wings , 4 a torpedo , 5 a harp . Well , See Y'all down the trail !

The Chisolm Trail Heritage Museum had such a great idea for the brand contest. I was very pleasantly surprised when my brand arrived in the mail and very appreciative to the museum. I hope they can come up with some more western oriented ideas the public can participate in. And thanks to the Arizona Ghost Riders where I first heard about the contest.
That is awesome! The museum folks definitely have the education part down pat. If I lived there I'd be hitting Bryan up for a job!

It process hadn’t changed much until the 1960’s when I worked (played cowboy) on my college roommate’s folks’ ranch in Wyoming. They were old school castrating, inoculating, de-horning, and branding on the ground. My job was either castrating or holding the calf by the rear legs while someone else did the deed. The calf sometimes baptized me with manure but Rocky Mountain oysters hot off the angle iron branding iron support made up for the smell. I still have my stock knife..... 🤣
I wouldn't doubt the calf would poop during that ordeal. Good memories nonetheless.

Request: Can you do a video on explosives, blasting caps, fuses and etc in the Old West? What materials were used? Who used them? What was their availability? Was there any legal restrictions? How did the explosives work? Or not work? How often did accidents happen? How often were they used maliciously? How did explosives for better or worse shape the Old West?

You remind me of Mrs Chisolm. A 87 yr old lady living in grand rapids mi. Back in 1985. Was either the grand daughter or grand nice of John Chisolm. She had a black and white photo album of places and people. They lost most of the large fortune in the 1929 market crash. She was still living in style though.

Nice video Santee, Jo-Ann and I used to help a Wyoming Rancher brand his cows every year. In exchange he used to let us hunt his ranch. We looked forward to branding day because after the branding was done they always put on a huge meal , complete with home made ice cream and all sorts of home made pies.

Howdy Santee! I just watched an episode of "The High Chaparral" where Big John Cannon yelled at his son, Blue, who was branding a calf: "You're suppose to brand the calf not barbecue it!" Lol! It may come as a surprise to you, BUT I helped to brand cattle when I was a kid, yup, in the sixties. I handed the branding iron from the fire to the branding guy.

I made a brand to represent the ranch in the fantasy western novel I wrote. I got it done up as a tattoo over my left ankle. I'm quite sure that was less painful than getting an iron put to me haha!

The old timers around here close to medicine lodge ks. Say some guys would use a pair of pliers and the d ring on there cinch as a running iron got to where the local sheriff was checking saddles at the local sale barn for discoloration on the d ring.

My wife’s Uncle had a big ranch in Honduras (central american cowboys) growing up and she says it smelled horrible when they would be branding cattle.
