Sabalenka's ability to recover after bad first sets is really something. She got some flak for being weak mentally earlier in her career but she just never seems to believe that a match is lost until it's over and it's admirable.
I think it was her screaming earlier on in her career for which she received criticism. Leaving behind her shrieks on court, she definitely has become a formidable player on her own terms as you have rightly pointed out. Earlier even I used to be a Sabalenka hater, but she's definitely proven me wrong after winning that Australian title.
Give it some time... we don't know yet. Sabalenka losing against herself is kind of her thing.
Sabalenka has really raised her game this year so far. She looks great. Iga looks great. The final we all want to see.

So nice to see Aryna back in action. It's only been 3 wks since the AO and I already missed her sublime tennis. Ostapenko was extra motivated as the defending champion so this beat down is a major statement from Sabalenka that she's the real deal!
Looks like this is the year when Sabalenka challenges Swiatek for the number one ranking. Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Rybakina all playing well will make it an interesting chase for the top spot!

Ostapenko really needs to work on her attitude in defeat. Of course it's annoying to lose but you can’t project that on someone who you actually congratulated a few weeks ago on social media on winning their first Grand Slam. This really doesn’t make sense too me. You can clearly tell by Sabalenka's reaction also. Aljona literally did the same thing to Kenin at the French Open after practicing together with her and also to Yastremska, who apparently is her best friend again. You cannot act rude just because you lost. Even saying that sounds stupid!!
Ostapenko does tend to be outspoken and she does react in ways that are quite rude at times. I know it's not the correct etiquette expected in tennis, but i like the fact she's unfiltered and there's a kind of rebelliousness there that is entertaining to watch.
And yet Jelena is incapable of growing up.

She's only trading punches because of the added weight. Ostapenko needs to get back to her real weight class. Stop being lazy, and go on your daily runs, like every other professional tennis player.

Don't confuse competitiveness for (lack of) class. Aryna is very competitive, but she's also one of the classiest players out there, rarely ever complains, always polite and courteous win or lose. Ostapenko OTOH...

Umpire was corrupt, you idiot. Follow the rules or don't officiate any match. This umpire got his line calls in second and third sets wrong for most of the time. If you think that Ostapenko's level dropped that much or that Sabalenka's level improved that much, then you are even bigger fool and laughing stock than I thought. If Pierre Bacchi would have followed the rules and called the lines according to the rules, then Ostapenko would have won this match. Only in the first set umpire according to the rules called the lines.

Sabalenka is the only player who could stop Iga!
It really depends on the surface. On slow HC and clay, Iga is unbeatable except once by Krejcikova. But on grass and fast HC she has been beaten by these players in the past 12 months: Ostapenko, Cornet, Garcia(clay), Haddad-Maia, Keys, Sabalenka, Rybakina(twice), Pegula. The Dubai court is medium, but Doha last week was really slow.

Ostapenko reminds me so much of the 90's-late 2000's player Mary Pierce. The way that Mary could just blow a high quality opponent who is much higher ranked than she off the court when she was on? Incredible. When she was just playing avg, it wouldn't be very close. Same for Ostapenko. Either she blows you out, or she can't keep the ball on the court lol.
I never once saw Mary blow an opponent of any quality.

Both ladies with strong strokes. Sabalenka was better with shot placement. Sabalenka is now playing like a young Serena. Mentally, we have to wait and see if Sabalenka wins a few close matches.
Until Ostapenko improves that serve, she will never hang in the top 10. Her game is actually good off the baseline. Very competitive baseline game against the top players but that effing serve. It’s like Dementieva but with a slam in tow.
