Rewind: When 60 Minutes went aboard the Moskva warship
The flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, the Moskva has sunk. Ukraine claims a missile strike; Russia says it was a fire.
In late 2015, 60 Minutes was invited aboard the warship as it began providing anti-aircraft defense for Syria.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

The cruiser is now underwater as is reclassified as a submarine
Hehehehe

Doesnt Ukraine have ships? I'd consider that a navy or are they just national guard types

The russian flagship was commissioned in 1978 in Ukraine and in 2001 was retrofitted and renamed the moskva and in 2022 the pride of the russian fleet was renamed again to the Snake Island Memorial Reef.

Love it!
what snake island memorial? lol... you might wanna catch up on your facts since Ukraine themselves said all soldiers from snake island surrendered and were held in Russian captivity. also, since about 4 hours ago - Kiev got struck by another kalibr missile as a retaliation for the sinking of Moskva. so, by you tryna be funny on KZhead - more people died as a result of that. with many more to come, unfortunately

I love that Ukraine released a new stamp of the Moskva with a Ukrainian soldier giving it the middle finger with "Russian warship, go f*ck yourself" just 2 days before they sank it. Ukraine needs that kind of morale boost right now. Also that Russian political analyst lady got it exact right, it was all a show for Russia to thump its chest in Syria.
Ukrainian soldiers are untrained and ill disciplined, that also barely have any supplies. This "strong" ukrainian army your talking about couldnt defeat Donbass militants for the past 8 years.
Good start
@@eliasziad7864 "Ukrainian soldiers are untrained and ill disciplined" How much more pathetic Russia looks that it can't take over a country with untrained, ill disciplined soldiers that are carrying away Russian tanks with tractors because they've run out of fuel! LOL "that also barely have any supplies." BUT ENOUGH ABOUT RUSSIA'S ARMY ba dum chk* the supplies we do know the Ukrainians had 'before' the war started included Bayraktar drones and Neptune missiles. The exact things that did this. But if the USA or NATO gave them equipment better than that to do this WE CAN ONLY DREAM. Funny that Russia claims the ship only sank because of a storm, boy such a desperate looking sea in those photos hahahahahaha. Also funny that Russia is now moving their fleet further away from the shore into the Black Sea from satellite photos. Shorelines must cause ammo stores on ships to explode... PS: Russia's nukes don't work. You have to service them yearly to make them work. Russia hasn't serviced those things in decades. Their nuclear stockpiles looks just like their army, likely worse.
Ukraine: We sunk a Russian warship with a missile. Russia: No! It was a fire you idiots! Ukraine:….a fire, from our missile.
No! It was sank when towing... After the fire... After our rockets hit it.
Ukraine: We sank the Moscow! Kremlin: No, WE sank the Moscow...oh, wait.

@@yawos9024 russia is very clever to send their 'weakest' flagships first for the ukrainian military to sink with their missiles... once the ukrainian military has depleted their missiles sinking all the weak russian flagships, then russia will send their 'good' flagships in but only once all the weak flagships have been sunk... putin plays the 3D chess guy!
Yeah, like that US submarine F-35. Which is now performing a permanent underwater sea trials and secret missions in the south China sea. I wonder what will become of its enduring mission😂🤣🙄. Mariupol has been liberated from Ukraine Nazis 🖕🖕🖕🖕
@@yawos9024 Mariopol was expected to loss in the first week, it can last this long is actualy testament of how poorly the Rusian army operated.lol
After going on board a Russian Ship "destroyer" in Norfolk many years ago that came to visit. The first thing I saw that made me think that these ships were death traps were the lack of compartmentalization. In other words, not enough areas to seal off in case of flooding. wide open spaces with very few water tight doors unlike American ships. One could tell that preventative maintenance was not in their vocabulary.
The ship was destroyed by two Ukrainian Neptune missiles. It was then scuttled in deep waters.
I was thinking the same thing. They should have been able to seal off enough of the ship, counter flood to prevent it from rolling over, and pump out everything else long enough to get the ship back to a port. They'd probably be better off giving credit to the Ukrainians instead of admitting how poorly designed the ship is.
I believe I remember seeing a report that Russian/Soviet surface vessels were 'glass cannons' that were basically expected to, in the event of a war with NATO, expend all of their munitions to do as much damage as possible before they are sunk. So they are way overarmed, way under armored and I'm expecting that survive ability was not a priority with these ships. Now I'm not an expert so i can only regurgitate what I've heard, but can you imagine how the Russians must feel if the Ukrainians really did sink this ship? I mean it's one thing to die gloriously in battle against your hated foe NATO... They won't even call the invasion of Ukraine a war.
Ahhhh didn't know that, interesting & very unlike practical Russian design. Maybe the waterproof door factory closed down ? lol #SlavaUkraine
Parade material, not anymore.
It was both a missile attack and below deck explosions of ammunition. That’s what happens to a warship armed with explosive ordnance that is hit with a missile. That is what happened to the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor. The bomb stopped on its deck didn’t hurt her. It was the powder stores and other explosive materials that the bomb explosion ignited that split the Arizona’s keel.
"The Moskva has not been sunk. The Moskva is now carrying out a special underwater operation." --Putin
You see: Russia does have successful operations, this one didn't fail.
When will Putin meet his own six feet under soil operation?
a mission that Moskva will never resurface again
Right, it was actually a submarine and when attacked it submerged. If Putin had thought of that he would have announced it to the world. No lie is too outrageous if the notion pleasures the great one and allows his followers to feel good about another lie.

Putin: "the Moskva, due to Great service history and excellent performance, has been promoted to submarine." 😂
With controlled fire due to planned maintenance.
I wonder how Putin and the Russians are going to spin this? There is no positive way to spin this. Like either it got destroyed by some seashore missiles from Ukrainian held territory of there simply was a fire and they had no way of protecting against it. Either way it looks terrible and the other sailors in the black sea will probably know/find out their flagship no longer exists lol.

I wish they didn't keep calling group names that ''Russia targeted'' because in reality Russia cared even less about civilians in Syria and kept randomly bombing cities for years while killing tens of thousands civilians!! They even began bombing Turkmen majority cities like Azaz in 2015, however Turkey shot down their plane and said nyet in it's own way, since then Russians stopped targetting Turkmen cities and groups...
Pretty sure they re released it due to the ship sinking....

What an amazing looking submarine. Its got that sleek look from the 1940's an now it has advanced boyancy where it can stay completely submerged for the duration of its life. Amazing technology.
I think the best news of all is that most of the sailors escaped safely and the flagship is at the bottom. Best of both worlds.

These Russian soldiers are slaughtering children in Ukraine. And you think it's OK they escaped? I would comment what I think of you but that would probably get me kicked off YT.

As a former US Navy sailor I wonder how much training the Russian sailor gets in damage control and fire fighting? On a US Navy ship everyone is a firefighter!
Yes....my uncle was a machinist on the USS Forrestal during the Viet Nam war. He was on board when there was a catastrophe. Anyone interested can read about it on Wikipedia.

Russia: It blew up by its self and sank in a storm. Stop asking questions.
Only we are powerful enough to destroy us!

Their excuse is actually worse than saying was it was hit by enemy fire
If it had blown up by accident, why do satellite photos show that other Russian Navy vessels nearby immediately moved away from shore ? The only reasonable explanation would be imminent threats of further attacks from onshore defenses.
Telling the world that it sank on its own isn’t the flex they think it is. Hilarious that they come up with that rather than admit the truth.
The Russian missile cruiser Moskva heroically destroyed two Neptune missiles with its hull. For this heroic act, it was promoted to the rank of submarine! 😆
Very good👏👏
I bet it looks spectacular on the ocean floor. Strong, capable, and imposing.
The Ukraine war really puts a new light on everything the Russians did in Syria. Same propaganda, same ruthlessness, same arrogance. I loved it when one of the wars architects claimed they were supporting Syria because the Russians wanted to 'restore Statehood', something they're trying to destroy in Ukraine. I also laughed at his criticism of the Syrian military with its low morale and its inability to properly coordinate attacks. This is exactly the criticism of the Russians in Ukraine.
I now am laughing at claims about Israeli success vs the Arabs in the wars to poor equipment sent and poor leadership inferring the SOVIET be better. For the big wars in 62, and 73 the Israeli tanks and equipment was even older than the Arabs stuff.

It just hit me, the guy at 7:40 is their special military operation press release spokesperson.
We currently have no idea how deep the Moskva sank. (UPDATE). US military reports the ship sank in 300 feet of water. It is a Soviet era 40+ years old ship. The Back Sea is up to 7000+ feet deep. It would appear recovery is economically unfeasible. While we currently don’t know if the fire was the result of an accident or the result of a Ukrainian weapon (UPDATE). Now we know. Two Ukraine missiles sank the $750 million ship. Either way it reveals a continuity of weakness in the Russian military. Morale will continue to sink with Russian ships.
I'm guessing the other Russian Captains left on the line are going to be a little less aggressive now that the best equipped and maintained ship in the fleet has gone to Davy Jones locker.
True, but signs point to the Ukraine claim being true. After the 'incident' other Russian ships in the Black Sea quickly repositioned themselves much further from the coast.

In the meantime back in 2005 for test purposes the US Navy purposely sank a retired USA Supercarrier the USS America. The aircraft carrier was pounded with explosions for four weeks. After detonating all the planned explosions the aircraft carrier refused to sink and they had to board it and set more explosives to finally sink it. The design of that older supercarrier is still classified. They used what they learned from that test in the designs of the new Ford Class Supercarriers.
The USS America was a fine ship but she didn't have fuel or munitions onboard during the scuttling mission. Looking back to WWII shows that most carriers were destroyed by the combustion of their own fuel and munitions. Just one or 2 bomb strikes was enough to sink some carriers because it set-off the onboard munitions.
That is so AWESOME!
@@ericmcleod7825 Reminds me of the Hiryu, Soryu, Kaga and Akagi.
@@ericmcleod7825 truthfully a few of the USN carriers and other ships lingered on the surface after being critically damage..USS Hornet was only lost because the US fleet had to leave the field of battle due to a looming superior IJN surface fleet. We tried to sink the Hornet with guns and torpedos but it ultimately drifted unmanned for in excess of 12 hours before the IJN found her and put more long lance torpedos into the sides to put her down. USN ship construction is some of the best in the world today as a result of all lessons learned during WWII.
@@ericmcleod7825 Yep and the Carrier they used in Atomic Test had to have it's water tight doors opened to sink from the 2nd Bomb which was put underwater as the first bomb mostly a failure at damaging ships. Wrong lessons drawn from those tests because it got rigged that way.

The missile silos of the Moscva sit above the rail; all NATO warships keep their missiles in a standard hold below the main deck. That must have been a horrific fire.
Those deck tubes only hold 16 missiles; most likely anti ship ones. The bulk of the missiles are stored vertically in the deck like most missile cruisers. And it held 8 8-rotary missile batteries. That's up to 64 S300 anti air missiles.
@@evanrobinson7657 in the port and starboard side silos there will be a concoction of two-stage propellants and munitions that will easily weigh in at over five hundred pounds a piece. The accounts of liquid-oxygen and kerosene disasters from the early forties made me squirm in my chair. All I could think of was sea-rash on top of second-degree burns for the survivors. Moskva did not have that going for it; there was no need to blast a hole in the main deck.
Those 510 crewmen were sealed inside a 600 foot metal container full of tightly packaged rocket fuel, ammunition, kerosene, and missile warheads. The "evacuation" story never seemed believable.
