Londongrad: How the U.K. became a laundromat for Russian oligarchs’ dirty money

2022 ж. 5 Сәу.
792 726 Рет қаралды

For years, the UK has welcomed oligarchs with few questions asked about their fortunes. Billions of dollars poured in. Now, British intelligence is warning that Russian money is propping up Putin’s regime -- and that some of it is helping fund the war in Ukraine.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

    • The only anonymity allowed is when the properties are bought by companies, allowing the people who own those companies to hide behind them. I'm a Brit and, when I bought my house, I had to prove who I was in several ways to pass the money laundering legislation. There's no way they would have allowed me to buy anonymously. Yet again, it's one rule for the rich and one rule for the rest of us. Many of us are livid to know that the people these laws were designed to stop (laws that make life difficult for the rest of us) have a loophole, rendering the legislation pointless. Sadly, though, these Russian oligarchs are friendly with our politicians - meaning the latter will never close those loopholes and put things right...

Still, in truth, the United States is currently--and was during the previous administration--attempting to deal with the problem of China without worsening matters further, as happened when Trump embarked on a trade war with China and essentially accused the Chinese of intentionally unleashing the SarsCov2 virus upon the world.

Just look at the way the UK responded to the poisoning of its own citizens along with the radioactive isotopes that were strewn about London in the aftermath. Someone should have STOOD UP to them back then. And the US should have known that if you allow the Crimea invasion, that it would lead to Georgia and Ukraine. No one did anything to Hitler after he invaded the Sudetenland, Chekhovian, and the border. So, he had good reason to believe France and Britain would do NOTHING about Poland.

Now it sounds like you are saying the US should have gone to war with Russia over Crimea. I guess the correct foreign policy for the US is that the US should never get involved except when it should. @kinlika@kinlika2 жыл бұрын
  • This video misses several critical points; 1. Russian money and interference played a large role in the 2016 Brexit vote, Evgeny Lebedev used his newspapers to publically push for Brexit and influenced Boris Johnson to back Brexit 2.The Conservatives initially gave the Russian Billionaires 18 months to move their assets before the sanctions are applied, this was then reduced to 6 months when it was made public. 3. The Conservatives have received an estimated £10 million donations from Russian Billionaires, not the stated £4 million. 4. The Security Services report into Evgeny Lebedev (who was made a Lord) was blocked from release by Boris Johnson himself, MI6 specifically stated he should not be made a Lord and Johnson overrode their objection on his personal authority as PM. 5. Boris Johnson has a very close personal relationship with Evgeny Lebedev, our PM has been invited to Evgeny Lebedev's Italian villa for "party" weekends on numerous occasions, once when Johnson was the Foreign Secretary he secretly went for a weekend leaving all his security staff behind in London. 6. The Russian money that was supposed to be paid in taxes, etc.. to benefit the wider community thus justifying this laundry service, has never reached the wider community, from 2010 onwards the Conservative party have been cutting public funding in every area of government, even now in 2022 public spending (in real terms) has not reached what it was in 2009. The level of corruption in the Tory party is far, far deeper than most realise

    @BigBirdy100@BigBirdy1002 жыл бұрын
    • Social media also works in the wrong direction as well. it's full of websites where evil people can meet and reinforce and spread their beliefs. The South got a conscience after their evil actions against black people were shown on TV for the world to see up close, back when there was no social media but there WAS an "equal time rule" for political opinions on TV. When the Republicans dumped the equal time rule, Fox "News" was born, and more racists who had to hide before now got to come out of the closet, couching their racism in legalisms, buzzwords, and twisted logic. Now, TV and social media are the same, except that there are many fewer TV channels than websites, which may be giving the power back to TV.

And the social media platforms have had to crackdown on propaganda but i think have done at least a fair job. They've even banned trump on Facebook and Twitter and some others. Social media has definitely helped racial inequality. But yes, tv did spread awareness on it early on, like witnessing the beatings on camera. The film serves as evidence, but it still takes people power to bring about change. Like for war crimes, film and photographs is powerful evidence. Citizenship in a different country should always be something that you earn, by working hard, learning the local customs and language. It should never be something that you can just "buy" and then treat the massive amounts of property that you purchase like a savings account. So many Londoners have been priced out from the property market because of these Golden Visa schemes. This really has to stop because if you walk around the wealthiest areas of London, you're unlikely to find anyone who is British and this is a problem all over the UK. For a country that constantly cirticises other countries about corruption, here is the irony.

  • The city of London is outside of British regulation. The golden mile has always had financial independence. It was the City of London that broke the siege of Derry in Northern Ireland, hence the change and controversy of the cognomen of Londonderry. London has always provided from the misery of the helpless innocents.

    • You've got a few of things wrong there. Firstly, there's no such place as "The Golden Mile" in London. "The Golden Mile' is a dilapidated tourist area in Blackpool. Were you referring to "The Square Mile"? If so, then the financial services industry in Britain is well within British regulation, and is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

  • Since you're pointing at the UK, don't forget to point at your own country 60 Minutes. The US immigration system is just as bad, with folks who have money and connections getting the nod in front of legitimate immigrants who waited patiently in line, doing the right thing. I have had the pleasure of attending a few oath of citizenship events, once in a while, you spot some of those folks in the event because unlike everyone else, they are usually have immigration escorts with them, have reserved seats, and are wearing designer clothes. And that's just the regular folks with money, pretty sure the really well connected folks and lots of money don't even have to go to such an event as the event is probably brought to them privately by a sea of lawyers. Not hating, just saying.
