"The Last Train" - all six episodes - ITV 1999 Television Series COMPLETE!

Six-part British post-apocalyptic TV show from 1999. Was a very compelling series at the time.
Visually a great romp around some choice grim northern England locations. My favourites included the Butlins summer camp and the abandoned power station. Has the occasional awkward acting and story-line moment..... but very decent overall.
Apologies for one or two sections where the music was muted. I did this using youtube's tool to avoid copyright issues (I think one of the song was Cliff Richard.) Also seems to be blocked in the UK, bu nowhere else.

  • I worked on this series as Visual Effects Supervisor, camera operator, motion control supervisor and second unit director. It was great fun but very hard wok as many of the locations were very harsh indeed. Especially Butlins in November!

    • Good work, Peter. I was surprised at how young certain faces look and that Matthew Graham wrote it around the time he, Tony Jordan and Ashley Pharoah were throwing ideas around for what became Life On Mars.

    • Great stuff Peter, and thank-you. I was just reminiscing about tv series that I used to watch back in the day, things like Battlestar Galactica, and I watched an interview Katie Sackhoff where she mentions a project she was going to be working on called "The Last Transport" and bingo "The Last Train" lit up in my mind like a firework. I remember being absolutely transfixed by this series (I was 14 when it was released) and to see this now on KZhead is fabulous - I get to watch it again after all this time. Also, how absolutely bizarre that yourself and David are commenting on this, the same as me, all within 6 hours of each other on the same day about a series that is 22 years old and was only uploaded to youtube 4 months ago?!

    • I vividly remember this series from when it came out. I loved it! Such a great classic sci-fi trope - post apocalyptic stuff. But rarely told in film or TV from this perspective. We usually just get Hollywood blockbusters with lots of special effects showing the world being destroyed and the main characters surviving, or we get zombie apocalypses. This was different and intriguing. Really brave of ITV to invest in this sort of production at the time - although I guess it didn't work out that well as we didn't see too much else, unless the remake of Survivors counts (I didn't like that one). Anyway, good job on the visuals Peter. Given this is over twenty years ago and working with TV budgets the world building looks very realistic. It's kind of how I'd imagine Britain to be 50 years after the absence of humans.

I never saw it on US tv not even PBS when we used to get lots of shows, like Benny Hill, Are you being served, Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers but now it's all on Brit Box and you have to pay. Can't wait to see Butlins where my father spent his summers as a kid. 🙂

  • Good lord, everyone is so emotionally fragile in this. Nicely grim though. I like that. Still, what is up with (in the real world) these lists of "people chosen to survive" an "incident". It's really real. The problem is, you get Jamestown afterwards. Not one self important idiot in power seems to recall this lesson of history. To survive you need: Farmers, craftsmen, tradesmen (of the useful kind like tanners, hunters, butchers, miners), and laborers. What you don't need many (or really any) of are: Scientists, People with Doctoral Degrees, Politicians (even one is just too many to keep around, replace politician with a nicely trained Project Manager and you've got all you need to keep things organized), etc, people with useless trades like goldsmith but a good blacksmith is a keeper. But you see Jamestown in the colonial era forgot this too.. and they all died, ever single man woman and child. A politician is not a good farmer. To keep complex systems working you don't need a excessively trained engineer you need someone with practical experience, the grunt, the one who keeps the water plant operating.

  • Watching it for the first time in 54 mins and 42 seconds and I’m already engaged lol. It has got to be one of the best hidden gems I found while searching up “The 4400 TV Series” (when I ended up typing “The 1100 TV Series” on accident to later find this). If I didn’t mistakenly type that out, I would never have found this hidden masterpiece. While I didn’t capture what happened for the first few moments, I later understood as I went through what it was about and rewatched previous scenes. And then I got engaged because The Last Train gave me the basics of what happened. An asteroid hits, a bunch of survivors get frozen, and they wake up to find the world in complete ruins. The best build up I’ve ever seen since 2K’s Bioshock with Rapture. Efficient. Powerful. And Believable. While I was unaware of how long it has been, assuming about 7 years according to the decomposed bodies, I was shocked to realize it’s been *13 years* since the asteroid hit. That right there is enough for me to get engaged already. Although I call this a masterpiece, I’m surprised it lasted for 6 episodes, assuming it gets wrapped up later on. But aside from that, to me, a masterpiece is something you can always look back at like it hasn’t changed a bit and feels so brand new. Though the show does reveal some of its age, the scenario and the situations along the way felt brand new because while we do have other things like that (like I am Legend or The Last of Us), but not as mysterious like this (or have twists that reveal the lore behind the show). This gem to me is timeless and I’ll keep watching for my own time. (Also, I like how the supposed time they’re in happened to be ‘The End of the World’ when we’ve surpassed it lol). On a side gig, for the entire 54 mins, it even reminded me of Lostprophets’s Last Train Home. kzhead.info/sun/fMqafpGPrX-eZas/bejne.html

    • Pls be very careful about romanticizing any nation, esp. from TV shows or movies. Although the UK *was* a lot more advanced than the US in may ways, it has been on a parallel track with the US for the past 40 years, and it has declined in many of the same ways. Its PM, tho much smarter than djt, is an egocentric, incompetent, anti-govt hack who is more interested in personal power than in the good of his nation. His inept policies on COVID led to a death rate that's even higher than ours (and we're one of the highest in the world) -- and he's preparing to re-open the country even though cases have spiked bc of the Delta variant -- he refuses to accept the science on this issue. And as is the case with the US, there's an enormous wealth gap; a lot of poverty; white nationalism; and hostility to racial justice. For a more accurate sense of the UK, read _The Guardian_ newspaper -- there's no paywall. And btw, England is not a synonym for the UK. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises four countries, one of which is England. (Great Britain = England, Scotland, and Wales.)

    • @@timothyleebrown1593 Totally agree with the comments made. @dw999 No where is perfect because humans always spoil it. I live in one of the best places on earth, yet it is far from perfect apart from nature. Also, though America has it’s issues, the general population are okay. Trump has gone and as I write this in September 2023 who knows what will happen in the next two or three years. Life is a series of sliding doors. We go through one then another and our path changes. *It is the present moment that we need concern ourselves about* … *what you do in the next 5 mins could alter your life forever and then on down through the ages* . Children that would be born if you go one way, will not be born if you go another etc. Many religious people say we have our lives mapped out but if that is true then there is no free will and that is an utter contradiction in terms. Not logical. Nothing is mapped out, nothing is decided that you or someone connected you cannot change in the blink of an eye. No one, even for one second should regret the door they go through, even if they go through to disaster, for the other door could have led to even greater disaster. If life is good for you, you may have chosen a good path, but you can easily change that and the future of any unborn children. That is why the *‘holy trinity’* *thinking before acting* and *being grateful for what you have* whilst *striving to be the best human you can be* are the only important things we have.

  • Well, that was ANNOYING. I have way too many unanswered questions. Specifically, WHY did the children of the Ark think their babies HAD to be born at the Ark? Why were there fertility problems and stillbirths? What made them so confident that this pregnancy/delivery of Hilde's was going to be any different? What in the hell was the matter with Gettes, beyond Narcissistic Personality Disorder? What's with the weird blue light room that Hilde gives birth in, was it some kind of healing chamber?? Moreover, I don't think it is plausible that in one generation, or one and a half generations, that the descendants of the "best and the brightest" members of English society would degenerate so far as to forget what society is all about. Other than all that, it was a good flick, definitely fun to watch, memorable characters even if there was some forgettable dialog. All in all the miniseries is a great representation of the genre and a nice break from the Mad Max and zombie tropes.

  • Finally a imaginitive creative story. Glaring logic errors and storyline issues but great special effects and acting. Several questions. Why did one train car survive so long in a tunnel that just happened to collapse as soon as they began to awake. Second, why is the Scottish area still heather and mowed fields while southern England is tropical. How does a domesticated pig run around alone, not in a group of other pigs? How is a panther trapped in a factory for 40 years and not eat the pig? Just a few things that bother me. Why would babies live if born in the ark but not outside of it. Yet at least there was originality, a rare bird these days indeed.

    • The panther prob from the zoo.off spring from the zoo.the pig was one from a group that were gradually all eaten .use your imagination. Train moves more cuz the people are moving around and shifting it.

  • Thinking that in 1986 there was about 5 billion people in the world. 2023 it is about 8 billion people. Like the Story of how the small group copes and interacts. Almost unconceivable but quite possible that something like this actually happen. Doom for most people. How fragile life can actually be. Count your blessings and be grateful. Good watch. Enjoy. Thank you.

  • The holiday camp scenes were filmed at the old Pontins Tower Beach camp in Prestatyn North Wales. It's a housing estate now. Also I think some scenes were filmed at the old Trawsfynedd nuclear power station

  • An unexpected gem. The plot and its developments are a non-stop unavoidable watching reaction . From small details to the (excellent) claustrophobic / survival environment, a glimmering sequence of acting, editing and naturally directing. And looking back, all of that 23 yeras ago.. Amazing, great, great global job. That´s one of the strong features of British movie and TV industry - the unexpected becomes a bright constellation. Is there any other hidden "Train" I may find in KZhead? Please send me whatever you found. Thank you.
