The origin of the e-bike from the 1969s?! | Full Restoration of the motorized bicycle VeloSolex 3800

In this video I restore the Velosolex 3800. The motorized bicycle is the e-bike of the time. I had a lot of fun restoring the moped because it is very simply constructed.
have fun watching.

  • I also have one today, in 72 I was 14 years old (legal age for drive this one) and in France they were everywhere, especially in the countryside where bus transport was rarer than in Paris, the technical problem which made me riding a Motobécane moped (chain transmission) rather than a Solex means that in the rain or on a wet road, the drive roller slips and you have to use the pedals to move forward! Very nice work, I was critical when you rise the thin gold strip on the mudguard and I understood that you are a serious guy who likes restoration. More than seven million manufactured, in several versions, from 1946 to 1988. Congratulations from France. 🚲

    • @@nanalcd5628 My father who was in Saigon between 1954 and 1956 told me that he saw a few Solex, but mainly saw small 125 motorcycles like Tero, Motoconfort, Peugeot which were mainly used in town.

    • That is what the compression release lever on the right side of the bars is for. Hold it down to get going without compression, let go once you are moving and it starts running. I worked on these at a shop, and owned 2. Very often the compression valve in the head was clogged shut with carbon and did not work, which was interesting as that was also the way you were supposed to stop the engine. We learned to lean the bike over hard to the right (if memory serves) and it would starve it out of fuel.

  • This looks great from 10 plus feet away. It simply isn't worth doing what needed to be done, though I applaud you for what you did do. I especially liked the pinstriping you did. The entire body needed to be bondo'd to hide all the pitting before painting. You used a rattle can to paint it. Maybe if you spend 10 hours sanding it, you could remove all the orange peel and badness of the rattle can. But it's not worth doing it. It definitely was not worth (especially without bondo repair of all the pitting) using automotive paint. The polished metal is better than nothing. But recall it started out chromed.

  • Good video and well done on the restoration but it wasn't the e-bike of it's time it was just a cheap moped. Some of the really early motorbike designs used similar drive systems but they have never ever been called e-bikes, they are simply referred to as part of the evolution of motorcycles we know today and in that respect the designer of the Velosolex went backwards...

    • As the owner and restorer of one of these wonderful old bikes, I very much resent them being compared in any way to modern ebike TRASH. These are the real deal. They are MACHINES. They have unlimited range, do not have any computerized parts, are not disposable, and will not burn your house down. I keep mine in the living room with fuel in the tank. Gasoline requires an ignition source. Batteries provide their own ignition source. I have ridden mine over 100 miles in one day, stopping only to put more premix in the tank. The Solex was not designed to be pedaled. It only needs to be pedaled to start it. Then you just sit back and enjoy the ride. That little 2 stroke engine purring along at 20 mph is pure joy.

  • Very very very nice. At 27:10 the chain looks to be a little long maybe because of the fact that the original one includes an "half link" or "bended link" that shortens the chains by 12,7 mm. Did you know that 3800 means the maximum engine revs ? And that explains the different Velosolex numbers.

    • Hello @philippejoseph8604, I actually installed a longer chain because the original seemed too short to me. I didn't know that the number 3800 means the speed :) Thanks for the info.

      @restorwerke@restorwerke6 ай бұрын
    • @@restorwerke That's why the "half link" will shorten the distance between the pedal axle and the rear wheel by 12,7 / 2 = 6,35 mm to keep you in the middle of the oblong hole of the frame.

    • @@philippejoseph8604 Oh, okay, I understand. Yes, then I can reinstall the chain without any worries. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.

  • Very good iob, but it would be better to chrome and galvanize all the unpainted parts, otherwise they become rusty after a short time.😉 Greetings from Italy 👋 😅

    • Tahnk you very much :) that is true. But it is very expensive and no company wants to do it.

    • @@restorwerke yes, i know that is very expensive for chrome plating, but for galvanize with zinc is possibile buy kits for doityourself, quite cheap.
