    • Aries Targett Mads was very, very good in his role as Hannibal, but I understand exactly what you mean because I feel the same way. Mads did the best thing he could have done, he took the character of Hannibal Lecter and made the role his own by playing it in a completely different way, and his Lecter was amazing. Had Anthony Hopkins never played the role of Dr. Lecter first, Mads portrayal would be the one we all think of when we think of one of the books or films. It must have been quite a challenge to take on a role that had already been totally captured and "owned" by another actor. I must give Mads credit for even taking on the role, the same as Julianne Moore taking on the role of Clarice Starling. "Silence of the Lambs" is such an epic film that the thought of anyone else playing ANY of the characters in a sequel or prequel made me uneasy and a bit resentful about seeing them for the first time. I truly believe the only reason I love "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon" is because Anthony Hopkins again portrayed Dr. Lecter, if he hadn't neither film could not and should not have been made, they just wouldn't work. I'll also give a nod to Brian Cox, the very first to play the character of Hannibal Lecter, albeit in very few scenes which actually left me wanting to see much more of his portrayal while watching "Manhunter". Cox too made the character of Lecter his own, but I'll say it once more, there is only one actor that actually became Hannibal Lecter and is hard to imagine playing any other role, and that is and will always be Anthony Hopkins.

  • Mads is amazing as Hannibal, but they both have such different styles. Anthony will forever be immortalized as the best Lecter for me, not because he was the first but because he scared the living shit out of everyone who watched Silence of the Lambs. The way he doesn't blink, the way his eyes shine with madness. His melodic voice and the way he can turn it up into that creepy sneer, going from polite to horrific in .o seconds - "Did you breast feed her?" Mads is too charming. He hasn't scared me yet, hasn't made me lean back from the screen like; "holy SHIT." the way Anthony did.

    • +xenowhore Well, Hopkins's Hannibal always felt like he's the _old_ Hannibal, locked up many years ago, and not really caring about his dignity anymore. He's more of a beast, whereas Mikkelsen is still the young Hannibal, he still has the much of both the beauty and the beast.

      @Descalabro@Descalabro8 жыл бұрын
    • Sorry to be the one to tell you this but Anthony Hopkins was not the first Hannibal, Brian Cox was in Manhunter (The red dragon) from 1986, and we'll a better portrayal psychologically of Hannibal Lecter then Mr Hopkins. From the original novel by Thomas Harris. I do feel mads (my favourite Lecter) and Brian Cox, get Hannibal perfect he's a psychopath. And has research as shown us through the years. psychopaths are not crazy. There more less really charming, have beautiful IQ.... That's what makes them scary, that's why there called psychopaths, you could be sat I a room with one, start a nice conversation, laugh even. But in there head, they are God and you are an ant. Mr Hopkins however... Come across bat shit crazy, even when he's not locked up, you spot him a mile away. Which is hard for me to say because I love Anthony Hopkins, he's one of my favorite actors and his voice is like poetry to me.

    @carljthatsme94@carljthatsme9410 жыл бұрын
    • I think that lends more weight to his performance as Lecter. These days, Oscars are rarely given to people who completely deserve them but Anthony Hopkins' Lecter is just as beloved now as he was when he won his Award 28 years ago. Have you ever noticed how rare it is for Oscar winning performances to be remembered years later? Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was the last Academy Award winning performance that became iconic. Every other Oscar winning role in the last 11 years has either been forgotten or caused people to wonder if the Academy is biased and isn't really looking for the greatest performances anymore. I hope that changes soon. Rosa Salazar deserves an Oscar for her portrayal of Alita just as much as Heath did for his portrayal of the Joker or Anthony did for his portrayal of Lecter - I guarantee that Alita will become iconic, just like Ellen Ripley (which earned Sigourney Weaver an Oscar nomination but not the award itself) and Sarah Conner - but she'll probably be overlooked in favour of an inferior actress.

      @normustafa87@normustafa873 жыл бұрын
    • @@normustafa87 Yes but that movie came out after I made my previous comment. Joaquin Phoenix is the first actor since Heath Ledger who won an Oscar that people will actually give a damn about years later. Even Gary Oldman and Leonardo DiCaprio, who were both amazing in The Darkest Hour and The Revenant, aren't going to be remembered for their Oscar winning performances as much as Phoenix will be for Joker. The Darkest Hour and The Revenant were great but not the kind of films that people will keep going back to whereas Joker is more like a Stanley Kubrick movie - the ending in particular reminded me of The Shining - so people are still going to be watching it decades later.

The only argument people have for him being the best Hannibal Lecter, is the fact that he won an Oscar. That's it.

      @SteampunkCentral@SteampunkCentral8 жыл бұрын
    • I hadn't known he'd won an Oscar for it. I don't generally care about the Oscars, I've seen too many bad decisions there. He's not the most accurate to the first book, but future books were written with Hopkins in mind. (Because the character's popularity took off, Harris was pressured to put out a novel shedding more light on Lecter's character- hence, Hannibal & Hannibal Rising. He didn't care for that, Hannibal was born not made, but did it anyway.) I enjoyed Hopkins' performance mainly because he's just that charismatic. I liked him as Zorro as well, what can I say?

Lecter.. the bad guy...gets a happy ending, not the usual incarceration or death most stories would have ended with... the movies did not follow the books in that respect...

    • I would not say this. Lecter is a psychopath, even being somewhat fanciful. An idealized figure. They are like gods. They just do what please them. Concepts like right and wrong don't apply to them. Villain, hero, anti-hero... it's out of question because they don't recognize it. They know what it means, but they don't recognize as part of their world.

    • yes but it is well established in the books(if not the movies) that Lecter is not a psychopath... the final book in fact reveals a great deal about Lecter's motivations.

    • Samuel Atwood When you say final book, do you mean the final book chronologically or the last published one? Both reveal some aspects about Hannibal's motivations, I guess. However, it seems that psychopathology can be also caused by some kind of trauma, like Hannibal's sister's death, and added to this, Hannibal's discovery that he was feeded with her flesh. The psychopathology seems to be not only a condition you're born with.

      @blaeckingceorl4161@blaeckingceorl41619 жыл бұрын
    • i was referring to the book in which his child hood was discussed and yes his sister... in the final pages of that book the author more or less tells us Lecter is satisfied and finished with killing... he is more of a force of balance than a psychopath... his "adventures" were his path to "fixing" himself.... his victims were poisonous people that would have happily fed one child to another just to entertain themselves... he was on a mission to destroy that kind of thinking....

      @samuelatwood8378@samuelatwood83789 жыл бұрын
    • Samuel Atwood I just saw the movies and I always got so much things to read that I couldn't read Hannibal yet. Well, I don't know if I understood, but let me see. Are you telling me that Hannibal eating human flesh (the rude ones) was just a form that he found to fix himself or maybe just mitigate the pains of the past? This sounds a little interresting. Well, I think I need to read this book sooner than I thought to understand better Hannibal's mind. Anyway, I'm afraid that this can become a disappointment. I don't like this idea of anti-hero about Hannibal. I don't like to see him this way. I see Hannibal as something beyond all of this. Maybe like you said, a force, but not of balance but a force completely or practically free of limits with no obligation with moral senses or any kind of conceptions. Like a ghost, a spectrum, a shadow of a god among mankind. The pure expression of nature, like a stormy, a powerful lightning, a tornado, a burning fire which doesn't need to feel sorry for devouring everything because this is its nature, this is what it is. When is said things like "origins of the evil" I don't see it like "Hannibal BEING evil". I see it like Hannibal being the pure personification of what we call/understand as "evil", what necessarily don't mean that this conception applies to him as we understand it. This is why I think this character is so poetic, so beautiful, so great.

  • I met AH is 1993 while he was filming Shadowlands at Great Central Railway station in Loughborough. He signed his book for me and gave me a peck on the cheek. Very quiet and unassuming. There was no big ego or bluster. Just an ordinary guy with a very soft welsh accent. I remember writing to him in 1989 asking him for a signed photo. He sent me several, posted from Kensington beautifully signed. He was acting in M Butterfly at the time in London....and I believe that's when he received the Silence Lambs script. Always loved this guy's acting. Shame that he decamped to the USA but I can understand why

  • Ah Sir Anthony..humble yet such a highly educated man. I love that Hannibal Lecter bore so many talents..literary scholar, acclaimed psychiatrist, deeply immersed in music and the arts. Since learning that Sir Anthony is also a very talented composer and great literary scholar himself it makes the role so much more authentic. One of the most frightening villains of all time and yet he had such a politeness about him that you could almost forget how savage he actually was. Still sends shivers down my spine all these years later! And yes he'd be on my list of top 10 dinner guests..who wouldn't want this man at their table!?

  • Hopkins wonders why this character has caught the imagination of so many people. I think it's because Lecter is so confident in his actions, and he almost always succeeds. Confidence leads to power, which is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

They are attracted to any "protective" male quality, from TALLNESS (YES!! YES!!) to toughness, to arrogance, even to evil. Women think (deny this if you dare), "Well, if he's mean-as-hell to the Rest of the World, and nice to **me**, then I've got it made!"

He's had such a long and varied career, and he's also done some good TV work (The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case). Great actor.

But he's stunning to me in everything he has done! I first fell in love with him in The Lion in Winter, even though I didn't even really realize that it WAS Sir Anthony as Richard (he's so very young! ) And lastly seeing him in WestWorld, where he steals every scene he is in. Thank you , to you , Sir, for sharing your talent with us, so generously.

He's such a sweetie, and at the very top of my list of favorite actors; and I mean ACTORS, not petty movie stars who mostly got rich and famous because of their looks or pseudo-acting "skills". Sir Anthony Hopkins is one of my heroes, I've always loved and admired his work, ever since I was a little girl, he's genius in everything he's done. • One of the greatest performances of all time. when you watch the movies you see Lecter, there's no Hopkins in there. Great actors are those who make you believe in the character without an ounce of their real selves in it. in recent times only Ledger's Joker comes to mind where we forgot about the actor and saw him only as the character.

  • I am a fannibal and not just because of the show. I have always been captivated by the story of Hannibal Lector. He is the boogeyman that can be very real. Hopkins take is the face anyone will think about when you hear Lector, it's just how it is. What I feel like is he's a version you do not want to show fear, even if he calls you out on it. Mads, I loved his take on Lector. It was great to see three whole seasons devoted to the character. While I would fear to be impolite to Hopkins Lector, I feel Mads Lector would kill you in a much more horrific way if you gave him an ounce of disrespect. Hannibal the Cannibal, forever in our hearts...Or eating them.
