Krakatoa volcano explodes: spectacular huge eruption two months before 2018 tsunami

Krakatoa volcano explodes in a spectacular large eruption with a small lateral blast on 17 Oct 2018. The place shown in this video no longer exists: on 22 Dec 2018, the summit cone of Anak Krakatau island, seen here erupting, collapsed into the sea in a massive landslide, triggering a devastating tsunami that killed hundreds of people.
Video was taken during a VolcanoDiscovery expedition to Krakatau from 13-20 Oct 2018. In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred as lateral blast that excavated a pit crater beneath the southern lid of the crater, at the same location the September lava flow had overspilled from the crater. By 19 Oct, this new pit had merged with the main crater, enlarging it.

  • In hindsight you can really see how Anak Krakatau was setting itself up for the collapse and tsunami later that year. The vent system migrated towards the flank that eventually failed with the added material on the flank, plus being on the edge of the 1883 caldera left the whole thing poised to sink. As terrible as the tsunami in December 2018 was, I wish that was caught on camera.

  • Now imagine back in 1883 when it first blew its top. The percussive blast was so powerful, it could be heard 4000 miles around the earth. Plus when it did explode, the entire island was decimated to sea level leaving only fifteen feet of land left. 200 + years later, it grew back to this size. The fastest evolving island on the planet. During its first eruption however, it wiped out over 160 villages and killed over 35000 people while those who survived were left deaf permanently. These guys are lucky since the island is made up of more softer material to cushion the blast. In 1883 it was made up of dense compacted granite, which was why the explosion was so loud. Much like Mount rainier of today that scientists are watching very closely. If that mountain blows, it will wipe out both seattle and tacoma combined. Volcanoes are incredibly beautiful to look at during its clearance phase, but one could compare them to - a subatomic time bomb. You just never know when one will wake up even with the best equipment.

  • Krakatoa, or Krakatau (Indonesian: Krakatau), is a caldera[1] in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesianprovince of Lampung. The name is also used for the surrounding volcanic island group (Krakatoa Archipelago) comprising four islands: two of which, Lang and Verlaten, are remnants of a previous volcanic edifice destroyed in eruptions long before the famous 1883 eruption; another, Rakata, is the remnant of a much larger island destroyed in the 1883 eruption. Anak Krakatoa or Anak Krakatau (one in the same) means child of Krakatoa. Per wikipedia. Krakatoa is gone long gone from the 1883 blast if I read that correctly.

    • It's name even in 1883, was Krakatau. Evidently some educated 'IQ0,' '(what's new?), at the news desk of 'The Times' in London, decided to make the name more 'easily pronounced by their readers. Since then the name 'Krakatoa,' has been in common usage. It's new prominence is called 'Anak Krakatau! Anak Krakatau periodically erupts in vulcanian explosive eruptions hurling massive blocks about 5 km in to the air. The 1883 explosive eruption created the present submarine caldera. There is an excellent, well researched book 'The Day the World Exploded Krakatoa,' by Simon Winchester. It contains a lot of information that nany of you seem to not know!

      @Volcano-Man@Volcano-Man Жыл бұрын
    • You didn't. The new Krakatau is exactly like the old one in magma chamber, potential, and viscosity. Otherwise the recent eruption of Hunga Tunga Hunga Ha-apai should now also attach an Anak before that name now.

    • The 1883 eruption destroyed Krakatau, leaving three small islands. Anak Krakatau started to form almost immediately as a submarine volcano, and what we see today is the rapid rebuilding of the volcano. It is not small by any definition of small as it grows by several thousand cubic metres year on year.
