I was given a couple of rats as a gift once. I'd never considered them as pets, but they won me over with their charm and intelligence. Mine even took great care of each other. One of them got a bit sick, and the other one brought her food and kept her clean and comfortable until she got better.
Awww how touching.

To those not in the know, Edgar recently passed away. He went in his sleep, and was found by his family in the morning. Rats, unfortunately, do not live very long lives. Most typically only live for about 2 years, 3 if you're really lucky. Edgar made it to a good 2 or so, despite some heart problems. Rest well squish man. EDIT: for clarity, I am not Edgar's owner, just a follower of his family's Instagram account.

To everyone who may not know, Fergus has now passed away as well (Edgar passed unexpectedly in February 2023). Fergus was almost 3 years old, which is elderly for a rat. I followed their owner on Instagram, and it gave me so much joy to watch these sweet babies grow. Rest in peace, sweet chaos potatoes ❤
Thank you for the update. RIP handsome lads.
RIP you gorgeous boys!
I hope the owner is comforted by the fact that they led a beautiful life. Since I believe animals have souls.....God bless you Edgar and FErgus.
Chaos potatoes! Hahahaha!! I am the owner of many hamsters, gerbles and Degus.

I used to have rats and my mother always said they are gross and disgusting. When she visited us and i showed her how my two girls were sitting on my shoulder she just melted. She was genuinely surprised at how tame and clean they were. She always thought of them like the little critters running around in cities or in barns. Her face when she picked up one of them for the first time and my rat just held her finger and started to clean her. That's such a beautiful memory.
Same, my mom loved them and would even argue in arabic with her family in another country over how clean and precious they were
And now when your moms home gets invested by those things she is traumatized when she has to hire an exterminator 😂😂
Same, my mum always said 'no rats ın my house' but when she saw them she just melted
My father brought my mom a rat as an insulting gift but it backfired because we all fell in love with her. She was a wonderful pet that we allowed to run free in the house. 50 years later and we still remember her fondly and share our memories of her adorable antics.
Lol insulting gift? But why?
Aww my mom got me a rat for Halloween and she was full of surprises and such mischief lol she would always climb on my shoulder and nuzzle herself into my hair and would just go everywhere I went. It wasnt until we had her for a few months then she started to give birth to nine baby rats but unfortunately she ate them due to being stressed out by my sister's cat that knew how to get into my room. She later died. Her name was Marcella. ❤️
@@deniserenee1066 That's the only downside with rats. They only live a few years.
@Bruce D yeah but they super smart. Mine always hanged out with me on my shoulder. My mother left her coffee on the table without realizing my rat was there and the next thing you see is a white rat with a black face running 😄
@@Kt-cn2rq LOL. As children my sister and I were given a pair of adult rats that classmates no longer wanted. We took them out every day after school. Mine would travel on my shoulder and sleep under my long hair xo
In high school a friend's sister gave me the rat they had recently got and couldn't care for anymore.. His name was George, and he turned into my best friend. They're so sweet and so smart. He knew his name, never used the bathroom outside of his cage, and was always clean. I had no idea they had such short lifespans. I had him for almost 3 years. He's still the best pet I've ever had.
It really is a tragedy that they have such short lives, they always seem to go just when you are at the peak of appreciation and love for them, and it always hurts.
Thank you for sharing! I had a pet rat in HS too; she’s escape her cage and night, make her way onto my bed, and sleep on my pillow. They’re affectionate and sociable.

Rats deserve to live longer
100%❤
I understand the sentiment, but it's a bad idea. If rats can love for a lot longer, the whole ecosystem will be fucked. They reproduce like crazy, and can easily overpopulate any areas they breed in. Cities would be the most affected by this. Rats are already impossible to get rid of. Do you want them everywhere in your city? And this is not even considering the transmission of diseases
@@magicalnoodlesI think they meant domesticated 'fancy' rats
they reaaally do it breaks my heart 😭
same could be said with domesticated dogs or 'fancy' dogs, they still carry biological diseases though, except they can be used for service for disabled people, and for work like pulling sleds or sniffing out substances, etc. on the other hand rats are generally unlcean so unless you're into exotic pets who may or may not carry diseases in the day and age where there's a new virus everyday, I doubt you would want to actively domesticate them. and plus they dont contribute to the ecosystem except look cute and eat and spread their rat herpes, compassion and kindness is a trait most warm blooded pets have so there's nothing special about rats @@EG-hy9mv
I was a very lonely and awkward child, so when I finally talked my mom into getting me a rat, it was a dream come true. My “little rattipoo” became my best friend. We absolutely trusted each other. I would set her down in the grass, walk away and sit down 20feet away, and she would come bounding across the lawn to land in my lap. She was a truly special little friend.
Rats have little brains the size of half a peanut. Except for biting you, rats don't have enough brainpower to be anywhere near as malicious and antisocial as humans.
how sweet!! that's the best friend you can have!
I had a pet mouse in the mid 60s I named Him/her "Mickey" Mickey died on Pearl Harbor Day (Dec 7) because my boyfriend hated him and gave him rat poison... I found out ten years later because he told people at a party. They were not amused. I was working in a night club to support him thru college. He was cold in his running wheel which Mickey loved. I would come home after work and cut newspaper squares for his little cage let him run thru my hands for the tunnel game. I always think of him on December 7th. He was just a little brown mouse. I let him free roam in my appartment. I put his food under the radiator in the summer. The cat was always peering under the radiator I would put Mickeys snacks there. I loved that little guy so much, and still do over 60 yrs. later. I'd feed him cherrios and corn flakes, then we'd play. How I wish I had a picture of him.

For folks interested in a rat as a pet; GET TWO. NEVER have a lone rat. They are social animals and they do best with at minimum, one packmate.
Rats make for amazing pets and are very smart. They can show empathy which is rare in a lot of animals. They can learn their name, learn routines, recognize voices, learn tricks, etc. They are very amazing pets and once you bond with them, they're your best friends until they pass away. Male rats tend to be more lazy and snuggly + bigger, whilst females tend to be more energetic and more eager to learn tricks (plus smaller.) The _biggest_ downside to having fancy rats is their lifespan. They live 2-3 on average and they are also prone to a lot of health conditions. I still recommend them. They're amazing little guys
Sounds like chickens. Never get just one chicken for that is just cruel... 😊
Yea unless ur rat is a hamster.. those little fellas are territorial af
I was going to say the same thing. Please get at least two.
Not only get two, but give them free range time in a enclosed area either outside or in your home. Reducing stress is important for keeping rats healthy and this is the best way to do it.
My daughter, Heather had a rat. She brought it home from school. Ruby had brilliant red eyes. Heather had her for quite some length of time, and Ruby became a member of the family when Ruby passed the whole family mourned. She was a very precious creature. There’s really no better feeling in the world than when someone or something runs to you unafraid to embrace you. Something about gaining the trust of an animal or child to where they love you and know you’d never do them harm and seeing you is the happiest part of their day is just everything.
That was the most perfect way to say that.
Perfectly put. I am a 37 yr old male and am completely in love with my Russian dwarf hamster. We got our last Hamster on a whim and he stole my heart. It takes months to slowly change them to realise you are love and food but it's a wonderful process

Oh those two are so very cuddly! Yes, I too know about the awesomeness of rats! I had three that were very dear to my heart. They all three lived together and all died within the same year. They are only expected to live around 2 years. Mine all made it SEVEN YEARS!❤️❤️❤️
Hi Norma... I like rats too but I've never had the courage to cuddle with them. I feel unsecured about health issues. I am not very informed about this matter. My mind goes straight to the rats in general. I feed birds and I have fun when clever rats pop up from the bushes. How can I get serious informations about...? I mean about the health issues. Is there any respected site where from I can get the right informations and not be afraid of transmitted diseases? It's sounds to you propably ridiculous but this is something that I have to deal with. I would love to overcome this issue. Thank you ❤️
@@veroniqueboulvard6315 If you keep rats as pets, they carry no diseases. Like any dog, cat or rabbit. Especially when you buy them from a breeder or pet shop. Only the free living rats can be dangerous, like all wild animals they can carry pathogens. Rats and mice are more dangerous because they live in our cellars and stables and can spread from there diseases to humans. Other wild animals usually keep their distance but they could make humans sick too if they'd lived closer to us.
That's a reason why i never truly thought of caring for a pet rat. But if they can live longer... i might reconsider.
SEVEN years! That's wonderful and amazing🥰 My oldest were a white lab rat named Rosie that was to be killed after she was spayed by a veterinary student and my baby Catnip. Catnip was bought as a tiny "pinky" as snake food. My daughter couldn't do it! She usually fed her snake frozen little mice. I pretty much raise her from a little pink blob. They both lived 'til four years old. Unfortunately, neither was bred for a long life, but it was twice as long as I had hoped for❤️ May I ask what breed of rats yours were?
It might be that you kept them together. In some reptiles males will live longer than females (eg chameleons) and I think that's common in mustelidae too because of the draw breeding puts on the body. As for the health issues - as long as they're captive bred they'll be fine and harmless. I'm allergic to cats but nary a problem with rats. Do *not* get them from the wild, they can carry some spectacular diseases that are zoonotic including all three plague varieties (orientalis, medievalis and antiqua). Y.Pestis.medievalis is pretty much confined to Madagascar and be happy about that. 60% fatality rate in humans. There's a Flores giant rat (think trainee black/grey capybara) but I doubt you'll find them as pets. PS if you have dogs in the south western US be aware plague is kicking about and get them checked. Dogs don't get sick but they show an antibody reaction - and you can get it from them. If you see any small mammals acting as if they're drunk, be somewhere else, do not give them a hug, you may well end up looking like a Torchwood extra. Luckily it's more likely the milder orientalis strain.
Back in college, almost everyone in my dorm had a pet. Sometimes it was a dog or cat but it was often something less common. Since I remained in the dorm during holidays I had the dubious joy of taking care of many of them while their owners went home on break. I learned to appreciate and even love all sorts of pets: mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, birds and even Deeny the Chinchilla. Rats are quite loveable and incredibly smart.

True. I saw a video about a woman with pet cockroaches!!!
Caution to people watching this and wanting to have rats as pets. They make great and wonderful pets and everything this lady said is correct. However, they have short life cycles and its about 50\50 that they develop serious health issues after a year. I loved my little guys, I had rats for about ten years, always kept three, but it weighed on me emotionally because it always seemed that I had a sick one and that dilemma of when to put them down was a constant.
🥺
You got that right. We had up to 20, huge cage, many just ran amuk but it was semi-organized chaos. But eventually they got tumors or after 4 years just worn out and died. But smart, maybe you could say clean, but with that many you can't avoid their odor regardless of how well you muck out the cage. They dribble.
I've been told that if you want a pet rat who will likely live a good amount of time and wont developed tumors/health conditions you need to purchase from a breeder, do not go to pet stores. A few years ago my mom purchased a rat from a pet store whom she named Lucy. Unfortanently Lucy passed after 2 years due to very large tumors. From what I've been told, these pet store rats are susceptible to these health conditions because they're so inbred - they arent intended to live very long so they arent kept in high condition.
Yeah, I completely agree. Mine would develop weird neurological problems and had to be euthanized. A biologist friend of mine explained that it was because of inbreeding; the vast majority of rats inherit the same genetic abnormalities.
Try not to attach to anything in life, because nothing stays forever. There is a time you will have to say goodbye.
Rats are acually great pets. They almost never bite and they are super friendly and funny once they get used to you. Also very smart animals. Just make sure to get atleast 2. Since they are very social animals and can get lonely and depressed being alone.
Every living creature on this planet deserves love. They’re all as individual in personality as humans and are so much more aware than ignorant humans give them credit for. ❤

They're adorable 😊 My daughter has 3 rats... They are very loving and sweet
I have had them as pets int he past and they are amazing friends. They call them "pocket puppies" for a reason.
Man, why do these lovable creatures have short lives. 😔 They deserve more years being loved. Edit: We had 2 hamsters and both passed away few months ago. I miss both our bacon and beans.
I used to have rats as pets. Only reason I stopped they live to short of lives and there easy to get attached to.
They have a fast metabolism because of the type of species they are. Everything is quick, like their teeth they just grow and grow non stop. If they lived any longer we would be overrun with wild rats and mice. 😭 They scare the shit out of me the wild one's don't think I've ever been around a pet rat, the still frightened the shit out of me.
It’s kinda sad but, since they’re easily preyed upon, their bodies are built to reproduce as much and fast as possible before they eventually get eaten.
Same with ferrets. Both are intelligent af, lovable, and cute. It's really not fair if you ask me.
They deserve more years being hated 🤡
I had a rattie I adored named Ember. My daughter left her when she moved out & that made me angry. Suddenly I had responsibility... soon I discovered how adorable she was . Unexpectedly affectionate & playful. I learned to sew in order to make hammocks etc for her. It broke my heart when she died.
And the amazing memories with her will forever keep her alive
I can empathize with you. Sadly mine died after 3 years. They don't live long and leave their tiny paw prints on our heart.
That's a pretty ironic story for a video about a rat
it really is sad when they die.. my rat sam got out and lived on the streets for 9 days because her and her sisters lived in our laundry and sam got out of the window by climbing, i made sure to have it a little open but she still got out and it was my fault but after 9 days, we someone found her and got her back 😳 but she unfortunately died on my sistes lap in february 23rd- i cried for a long time
They are very cute! Every living thing just wants to be loved ❤️
Rats are the best pets! I have two 6 month old boys and they are precious! ❤️🐀
I used to be utterly terrified of rats, but looking at these two dudes, my heart's melted. They're just little fluffy friends!!
It is understandable why people fear rats. They unfortunately have a bad reputation. And of course people hate and fear mice, and they see rats as bigger, more terrifying versions of mice. And though you don't want wild rats hanging around, the domesticated versions of rats are a pure joy to keep around. They really are one of the most perfect pets. They're like a combination between cats and dogs. Like a cat a rat can be trained to use a litter box - not perfectly, but definitely much better. Like a dog you can train your rat to do many really cute tricks. All three pets are Snuggly. But most of all Rats are full of cute antics. We had our rat cage next to the TV and often found the rats much more entertaining. Sadly, it is their short lifespans that is heartbreaking. For anyone considering a rat as a pet, please do your research. It is vital you understand their healthcare needs and be ready to pay the price - vets are expensive - and not all vets treat exotic pets so make sure you have vet that treats rats in your area! And finally, one thing for sure to know is that eats are social creatures and MUST have at least one other companion...a three pack of rats is even better!
Well some..
@@katrubie3 indeed, mostly because humans are really stupid (not checking facts or take to effort to learn about an animal), shortsighted, and human are just really fear based naked apes….nothing more. Not worthy of ‘sapien’ in homo sapiens. I prefer a rat to a human every day.
This video shows exactly how destructive a rat can be in a domestic setting. Destroying houseplants and chewing through plastic that's harder than a person's skin an bone is common behavior for the American domesticated rat. They're extremely expensive and only live for a few years. I'm not sure if rabies vaccines are recommended for them, or what kind of diseases can transfer between house pets given the existence of feline HIV. Some people think these vermin are cute while other people use them to feed tarantulas, amgry frogs, big lizards, and snakes as well as to train feline Mousers and game hunting dogs.
As a former rat owner: domesticated rats aren't anything to be afraid of. 🐀
I had a hamster that was definitely more dog than hamster - he would “protect” us - if my sister and I play fought he would get up on his hind legs and squeak at us until we stopped. He would get between us to break it up. He was incredibly intelligent and knew his name - he didn’t need his cage locked ever - we just let him roam because he loved us soo much he would always just follow us around. My mum, who wasn’t an animal person fell in love with him. She even had us take him on our family trips away - he loved it. When he saw his travelling shoebox he would run up to it and jump in squeaking excitedly - he loved being in the car. He lived 5.5 years and was so loved, We held a proper little funeral for him and buried him under a beautiful cherry tree in an enclosed Japanese garden where there weren’t too many animals could get in, and we made him a little headstone - that was 20 years ago and it still hurts my heart. No one could understand how losing a pet that small meant so much to us all at the time but they didn’t know Jack!
Such a sweet story. which kind of hamster did you have, one of my first times hearing they live that long!
@@sailorisa awe thanks. He was a long haired golden coloured Syrian - they usually only live about 2 years, but he lived so much longer and was a proper little old man in the end.

No way I could have these gorgeous kritters as pets. The short life span would just end me. They're darlings.
Edgar coming when he's called is the most adorable thing.
My late husband had a pet rat named Spike that would respond to his name. Spike was enormously clever. He would stay in my husband's hoodie while he worked in the garden and climb on his shoulders all the time. My husband's hobby was cooking and when the film Ratatouille came out we absolutely ADORED it! We had a real life Ratatouille who "helped" my husband cook 😊We had Spike for a very long time. @@Bommelle wrong its a very relevant question and with one simple good search u will get these answers: can you keep rats on their own? Rats are social creatures and need the company of other rats. They use their sense of smell to recognise others, finding out about where they've been and what they've been doing. As rats are social animals, they can get depressed and develop abnormal behaviour if they live on their own. Do rats need company? Rats need company of their own kind; it's unfair to keep one alone because they're social animals. Single rats can even become depressed. there are two examples if you still don't believe me look it up yourself but PERSONALY as a rat own MYSELF commenting on a topic you know nothing about not only makes u look stupid but u also help to spread misinformation about rats which leads to unhappy rat lives just because u may have seen one rat happy alone doesn't mean that goes for all rats I can assure u a rat by itself will be a million times happier with a friend and since rats can get depression and suffer from loneliness they can die because of it and that's why I bought 2! the simple things u can learn but a 1 second google search I will happily go into extensive detail if u need further information do better.

I had one rat when I was young, probably one of the smartest animals I have ever had. One day when my family and I were out, she learned how to get out of her cage, and ended up dragging an entire loaf of bread from the kitchen all the way back to her cage(witch btw was on a table.) She managed to carry it up the table or chair right next to the table, and then figured out that it doesn't fit in her cage. Found her sleeping happily inside the loaf of bread, that was wedged into her cage.

My best friend bought me one for xmas 30+ years ago. My mum went mad. Ricky was as small as a mouse and jumped like a flea!( only a baby) He became the most precious thing . @Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
I used to have a rat named Tiffany back when I was in middle school. I gave her the name after the fancy jeweler because I wanted to give her a high class name and not a street rat name, lol. She was so smart. She knew her name, she was litter trained, and she could do tricks. I used to take her everywhere with me. I cut a hole on the inside layer of my double layered hoodie so she could climb inside and she'd just stay in there, snuggling. She was great. My heart rat. I loved her so much that I faked being sick one time because she was sick and I wanted to be there to nurture her. Luckily she recovered. I kinda think my mom might have figured it out, but she never said anything. She loved that little rat, too. RIP sweet little Tiffany. You were the best rat I could have asked for. 💖

I had two pet rats. I didn't expect to buy them but I saw them being sold as snake food and just had to save them. They were both so loving, smart, adventurous, and just all around amazing friends. They are up there with the best pets I've ever had. I always recommend them to people with little kids and they look at me like I'm crazy. It's sad they only live a couple years.
giving money to people who sell them for food incentivises more breeding of them for food. Its just how buying a chicken from a meat farm incentivises the meat industry by giving them more money to invest in expanding the business

@@lil_weasel219 they aren't just food, they are being fed to snakes that HAVE to have live rats, and the thing is they don't constantly ear either.
I'm no ecological idiot, but I don't have a big problem with rats in general. I don't like the wild ones in my apartment because of the damage they do, but I'm not freaked out by them either. My neighbor didn't like them at all, and would beat them to death with a golf club when he got the chance. He moved out, and another neighbor moved out, so their rats moved into my place. At first I didn't have a problem with that, as they cleaned up bits of food left around the house. But I finally had to draw the line when one of them climbed on top of me when I was sleeping. I blocked up the holes with rocks and haven't had a problem since. They're more like people than dogs - not a problem unless you get too familiar, then they start taking advantage of you.

So sad to hear everyone lost their babies. There really is no better family addition, in my opinion. To answer the question about how long they live, my pair of dumbo eared sisters lived for about 4.5-5 years. I acquired another baby rat by chance I guess, but she was bred as a typical white feeder rat. Old acquaintances of my ex husband bought her to torture her basically (absolutely horrible, I hope they burn in the deepest layer of hell) and I saw her with them one day. She was lethargic, terrified, in bad condition and she was so small, definitely still a baby. The plan the whole time was to rescue her but I needed them to physically hand her to me first. I asked if I could hold her and then once I had her, I told all of them to unkindly FUCK off, I wasn’t giving her back. She only lived about 1.5-2 years but had an amazing life after escaping those sadistic, disgusting cretins. I truly hate them all to this day.

I've kept rats and each one had such quirky demeanor and personality. One insisted on grooming my beard constantly. One loved being in my coat pocket. One kept a secret stash of stale chips in the lining under the couch. One named Marilyn even went on to be adopted by an exterminator, got her own Barbie car and was featured in his ads. She lived fat, had a couple of kids. No joke. Rats are the best.

My son has always had rats and they truly are sweet creatures and just funny little clowns. 🙂
I visited a pet shop in Philadelphia years ago, We past the rat cage and made some comments. A girl working there told us to try putting our hand in the cage. I was blown away at the rats behavior. They were very curious and very sweet, they all came to touch my hand, I could tell they were being very friendly. It really changed my view on rats.
It makes me happy to see them happy and comfy, especially knowing how hard of a life many mice and rats have (even ones that are pets...so many people just leave them in a cage all day and forget about them). I really wish people would give the same empathy they give to dogs to all other animals like these guys. Every animal has their own personality and loves being loved and giving love. ❤
My thoughts exactly!
Thumbs up to your post. Most rats and mice have bad lives. Many are experimented on in horrible ways as they live their entire lives in cold laboratory cages. Others are killed in gruesome ways by snakes, cats, birds, and other predators. Many are exterminated by humans in horrible ways - traps that drown them, poisons that cause slow deaths, etc.
Yes!! Great comment
@@billsmith7673 I was on a forum completely unrelated to animals, and literally a day ago I came across this random story by someone who had found a nest of baby mice in an inconvenient place, and she somehow happened to come across a wildlife ranger that took them from her, but never told her what he would do with them. She said they squealed when they were picked up. Then they were trying to trap the mother with a glue trap. It's that type of casual dismissal of life I had in mind. People literally treat them like trash, and it makes my heart sink. I've also heard personally from someone whose roommate worked on mice in a lab. I hate to even utter what he told me. These are all precious and individual lives who deserve so, so, so much better. It truly is a crime that humanity can never atone for enough...the scale of cruelty and lives lost in terms of what humans do to animals is a travesty that our species will carry forever as its legacy. It's why it's so important that we good people who "get it" work 100X harder to help animals...the wicked don't sleep. We have to work overtime to undo the damage wherever and whenever we can. We have to find a way to be better at helping than the people who are succeeding at causing the cruelty.
@@ncorp2668 Now imagine the cruelty, abuse, and horrible living conditions factory farm animals have to endure just to ultimately get their throats slit or heads bashed in because you want to enjoy a burger, x-mas turkey, or bacon for breakfast. ...or is it okay because those animals are just food?...
