  • This may very well be the hardest female song in contemporary MT. I'm in tech week right now for LB as Elle and lemme tell you THAT SONG IS NO CAKEWALK. If anyone thinks anything less of Laura bell bundy for breathing halfway through the last note I will personally fight you because it is SO JUSTIFIED. First of all this is not a power ballad where you just stand there and sing. There may not be much dancing, but the level of energy required to pull off this number is otherworldly. I'm out of breath before I even get to the last note. It's INSANE. Laura bell is still the best Elle I have ever seen and can't imagine anyone being better than her.

    • feefifofum Also "The Phantom of the Opera" from, well, Phantom of the Opera. Christine's is also exhaustingly hard, but she doesn't have much intense choreography, not like Elle. I'd even put up her role on the same league as Elphaba.

    • Hell Nah! Defying gravity goes from vibrato, to head voice, to belt throughout the whole thing. You don't hear the vibrating of notes at the end of that last huge note. In DG almost every note is belting and the hardest thing to do is to make all the BRING ME DOWNS vibrate at the end. You really have to place your voice in a specific place to make all your notes have the right pitch, placement, and then vibrate at the end. This song is hard especially with how much breath that last note takes, but theres a little more technique in DG. The role is a less spontaneous and wacky so the sining should be superior for Elphaba.

  • I love this song.. it starts with Elle being cautious and questioning that they really chose her, ”does someone know that i exist”, ”is this s mistake” and then her confidence just starts building up until she know she’s the boss ”and soon you all gonna know much better”. The energy is so unreal!! I always listen to this song whenever I need a boost to my confidence. Not to mention how hard this song is to perform on stage, it’s so high energy it’s crazy!!

    • I think it's pretty common for them to do this in musicals. It can be hard to hear the words clearly so important plot points need to be in the songs several times so the audience knows what's happening.

    • Yes! Normally rhyming something with itself is really bad, especially in musical theatre. However, they are doing it in such a way that makes it purposeful. As stated above, the first one is repetition, which is super common all throughout musical theatre history. The second is for wordplay which is also valid. The only reason this works is because they rhymed the whole phrase. If they just rhymed "again" with "again" or "you" with "you," it wouldn't have worked.

    • Really? Personally I like the original British casting of Elle for this song as she has a much more powerful voice and is slightly more energetic in the cast recording (a live one) than LBB here

    • Also LBB messes up quite a few notes here ie the "doing" in "doing something right" and the backing vocals aren't that great but it was probably MTV cutting costs by not having the backing cast or something of the sort

  • Laura Bell Bundy is so talented! My best friend played Elle before and she nearly lost her voice in this song. I also got to take over the role for the second show, she came back on closing night, we had a cast party and it was so fun!!!!
