O’Sullivan: Cyril knew about allegedly corrupt Police Chief Masemola before appointing him.

The key question from this cracking interview with forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan is whether Cyril Ramaphosa’s appointment of SA’s “very high risk” Police Commissioner was the result of neglect, incompetence or wilful deceit. Despite being provided by O’Sullivan with hard evidence that Fannie Masemola spends much more than he earns, overlaid by concerns that he’d spent six years as deputy to a corrupt former boss, SA’s president still appointed him Police Chief. His endorsement was included in Ramaphosa’s Nation Address where spoke of his confidence that Masemola was “more than up to this task and responsibility”. In this powerful interview O’Sullivan explains his detailed investigation ahead of the appointment revealed six of eight candidates were unsuitable, Masemola among them having been described as “very high risk”. He says a Sunday World report over the weekend that reveals Masemola’s corrupt practices should spur Ramaphosa into action as “this has the potential to be much more damaging to him than Phala Phala.” O’Sullivan spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews.

  • It is such an unfortunate situation, that in South Africa today, we have a black government, who supposedly hated apartheid with a passion, but who in their very existence, strive harder and harder each day, to entirely vindicate Hendrik Verwoerd and the proponents of apartheid, in all of their dire warnings of what was to be, should the black person ever be given power of government. Surely there cannot be a bigger insult to black excellence and black intelligence than this ANC government, yet the silence from black 'academia' and other black groupings who should be dying of utter embarrassment, is stiflingly deafening...

  • I used to be a very loyal and dedicated cop, lived for my work. A squeaky clean record, ex VIP protector for the State President and one of the youngest officers ever to attend a candidate officers course. In 1998 I started the new Garsfontein Police Station in the East of Pretoria, a life long dream and a privilege. Within two years I got worked out after Selebi kept on hammering me with 23 inspections, high-level visits, investigations, audits etc in a period of 12 months. Highly unusual and not known to areas outside of Pretoria and other provinces. I raised my concerns with my Area Commissioner, who kept on assuring me that, although there were instructions that I be investigated and charged, there was no substance in any report. I applied for a transfer, which was declined by my Area Commissioner. One sudden unexpected call, and I was transferred to the Central Firearms Register. I got tipped off that Selebi knew everything I said and did. I got replaced by a lady of the same rank (Supt/Lt Col). She did not posses a drivers licence and had no prior station experience. After some investigations I found out that she was Selebi's cousin. Within a few weeks some members of the station inquired about Tea club funds being misused. It turned out that she was given a Merc (Reg 80.6 car), and a appointed sergeant to drive her to work and other official duties. She got some unofficial driving instructions with the official car and made a accident, which was not reported. She used tea-club funds to repair the car. She never pitched up on crime scenes, etc because she stayed to far (Soshanguve). Selebi's investigation/inspection team followed me to the Firearm Register, and the same audit/investigations continued. After I found irregularities and a clear pattern with licence applications from a station in KZN (Umlazi) and a specific gun-dealer franchise I went down there to investigate. The Station Commissioner refused to meet with me (a director/brigadier) and the gun dealer became immediately suspicious. A few days later I was called into my new commanders office, a full colonel who was a warrant-officer under my command just a few months prior. A whole reaction force was standing behind the door. They jumped on my back and arrested me with the "necessary force". I got informed that I was arrested for corruption and fraud with firearm licences. They had a "warrant of arrest" which they refused to give to me. The head of the team was Capt Fanie Molapo. The same guy who arrested the head of the Jhb War Museum, the private gun collector from Fouriesburg (mr Barret), and some other top cops, etc. Selebi's right hand. I was detained at the Kameeldrift Police station and appeared in the Pta court. In total 13 arrests were carried out at the Firearms Register, all whites except for one Indian guy. My disciplinary hearing took two years to conclude during which time I was suspended. A lot of information was coming through, and it became clear that Selebi was calling the shots and that he was directly involved in the processing of fraudulent firearm licenses, and the main hub was Kempton Park Police station. (Remember the drug dealing episode?, Kempton Park was his base) Eventually I was dismissed from the Police Service in the most corrupt hearing, a one sided affair. I appealed successfully but my sanction was changed to dismissal suspended for a year. The Appeals Authority instructed an investigation into the conduct of the presiding officer, prosecutor and the witnesses. Selebi refused to comply with this instruction. I received information that Selebi instructed that a complete audit be done on every application I processed, about 53 000 applications. I appealed my sanction to the High Court and won. After a four year battle I just could not take it any longer and resigned. We were emotionally drained and financially ruined. Selebi was involved with a lot more than ever came to light. None of the other 12 arrested people were ever successfully charged, some went on early retirement. After 7 appearances in the Pretoria Regional Court the case was withdrawn, nobody ever saw the docket against me. This is my story, some of the others are even worse. My "new commander" became a brigadier, got caught red handed taking cash from gun dealers, resigned, got a top position at the Pta Metro Cops, got implicated again, resigned from the Metro and got reinstated again in his former job at the Firearm Register. Thanks for your efforts, please don't stop. God bless.

  • DO YOU WANT TO LIVE IN A BETTER SA WITHIN MONTHS? The ANC doesn't fulfill its constitutional obligations. The ANC is far worse than just a "poor" government, it CHOOSES to break down and to destroy. That is why this action is warranted and needed. Most importantly the ANC incites hatred/violence against us when they say that we stole their land - I checked, we didn't. It is not reasonable to expect law abiding tax payers to continue with "the winner takes all principle" of a democracy to their own and the country's demise. Who says we HAVE to be part of this political dispensation? Nobody questions this. It is time to stop, think and QUESTION this. Nothing and nobody have the right to force us to be part of this self destructive political dispensation. Approach the courts - convince them that it would be in the best interest of the country as a whole if we control our own taxes (first goal). Justify our rejection of the current political dispensation (main goal). (Our money under our control). Of eerder waarop is n minderheidsgroep in ons omstandighede GEREGTIG?

  • O'Sullivan is a private citizen for him to think he has the prerogative to tell who the government is supposed to appoint is unconscionable. This cannot be allowed. Guptas did the same with Zuma in fact there's nowhere in the world where a private citizen picks and chooses executive positions. South Africa by all means is not a banana republic. He's getting ahead of himself almost in desperation he already picks the person who must be appointed as a police chief (by that he's already thrown the guy under the bus with his big mouth), how does he think this works politically. I use to like the guy he's doing a very good job in exposing corruption but now i think he's stepping over the mark. Maybe it's time to go back to his boring and cold Ireland.
