Pokemon designs go through a lot of changes during their beta stage before they ultimately become what we know today in the final product. One of these changes include some Pokemon having different types to what they do today, and there are more Pokemon who had different types originally than you might think! In today's video, I'll be going over 25 Pokemon who at one point had a different typing to what they do now, and explaining why they possibly could have had that type originally!

@HoopsandHiphop when are you going to reveal Pokemon cardinal season 2
@@tommygalarian-slowbro9745 I will let you know when I have news to share about the upcoming project, it’s coming along well don’t worry 😊
Bro your beard needs a little trim. No offense but it's getting long
Hoopsandhiphop I think sunflora would have the Psychic-type because of the sun inspiration. The sun is a celestial object which has to do the typing and since it is a sunflower it would make sense.
@@HoopsandHipHop Judging by the fact that Crobat is the only new poison type evolution, does anyone theorize that Golbat was originally going to evolve with the scrapped Poison stone? Did friendship evolutions even exist in the demo? Umbreon did also used to require it, and the Sun stone could have been used for Espeon.
Can't handle giant psychic sunflower? What about a giant psychic palmtree?
the psychic one is a regular sized palmtree.

Unown being Normal could've been a placeholder, true, but there's more to it. The default Type of Hidden Power is also Normal, so they would have STAB. Not to mention that Arceus is also Normal, so more links with the Ruins of Alph.
maybe the multitype idea was planned for gen2
Exactly. Although i don't know why they didn't change Hidden Power into Psychic as well (Makes more sense than it being pure Normal).
@@nickdentoom1173 well I mean hidden power simply changes to a different type depending on the mon, it never is normal type

Umbreon as a Poison type makes a lot of sense tbh, in one of its dex entries it says it sweats poison as a defense mechanism so I can get behind Umbreon as a Poison type
I mean if umbreon was poison type that means umbreons only stab moves( if it even got any considering how horrid the movesets were in gen 2) would only be good againts grass types and that's not very good is it?
@Asyfa Anastesiana Back then no, but nowadays with fairy its pretty useful. Poison is good defensively though, so it'd make sense given how tanky umbreon is. Stab poison fang would've been great for it.
@@ZombieBarioth yeah thats true

The Sunflora one does make sense, as sunflowers were long thought to be somewhat psychic or alien (mainly due to their ability to always be facing the sun or each other). Probably was changed because, like you said for Snubbel, Psychic was an OP and legendary type in gen 2.
I wish they added steel type to Blastoise just like they did to Magnemite and Magneton. And Sunflora could have been fire and grass because SUN (fire) and FLORA (grass). Politoed should have been water/psychic And i love the idea of Misdreavus being dark/ghost! It is still my favourite ghost and i like Sableye as well, but Sableye lacks the ability to make use of Eviolite. I dislike Mismagius lips design though, wish it was different, but i guess that's a different topic.
Yeah, Politoed really should've had the psychic type.
Sunflora has nothing fire related, just a name, so I don’t think that grass/fire would suit sunflora.
Sorry to be _that guy_ but the Sun is not a "Fireball". Core Fusion is not burning. Our Home Star doesn't even contain Oxygen in the first place. Granted, Pokémon also claims that Mushrooms and Anemones are plants, which neither are.
Mismagius should have been a Ghost/Psychic type since it learns a lot of Psychic type moves, and it's a witch.
Blastoise can’t be steel type because of 1. It’s a starter, and 2. It would disturb the dual type cycle like Decidueye, Primarina and Incineroar (Fairy => Dark => Ghost
I hope triple typing never becomes a think in Pokémon.
Same.
*thing and yea... that WOULD add a lot more headaches. . .

From Snubble's design I can totally see that. For some reason in the earlier gens, pink was always a very common color choice for psychic types.
"His beard is weird" man... lmao
With the Hydreigon line originally being designed after tanks, it’s likely they could’ve been Dragon/Steel types during Black and White 1’s development
Yesterday, I was just thinking about a list of Pokémon that should've been pure flying type, and the Taillow line + Swablu was on that list. I wonder what made Game Freak decide that Rookidee and Corvisquire finally be the first non-legendary pure flying types?
"It's about time?" ?
Yeah for me as well. My list was Taiilow and Swablu, Chatot, Rufflet (Who then turns into Fighting/Flying Braviary), Fletchling, Noibat, Pikipek and Trumbeak (With Toucannon becoming part Psychic/Fairy), Rookidee and Corvisquire (But let Corvisquire have some armor on it already, since i don't think the Corvisquire/Corviknight design transition makes sense, since where does Corviknight get the armor from).
@@nickdentoom1173 Regarding that question about Corviknight getting armor, I think Corvisquire/Corviknight can be taken literally where Corvisquire is a literal squire who is in training before it receives knight's armor.
@@zestiestzest I know, but design wise, they don't make sense as an evolutionary line (Also: Is Corviknight really an evolution of Corvisquire or did Corvisquire just found armor and put it on). Design wise, it makes no sense.
I agree with you. Why do all of the regional Flying type families(minus Rookidee's) have to be part Normal type?
What about a video of scrapped content from games that made into later games?
I was expecting you to mention the pokemon that got their types added to or changed when new types were introduced, like Magnemite/Magneton gaining the steel type in Gen 2 and all of the pre-gen 6 Fairies either getting fairy added on or their types changed completely to fairy
I have a theory for why Loudred was a Fighting type originally while Whismur and Exploud were Normal. I think it wasn't originally supposed to be part of their evolutionary line. Exploud looks like a bigger version of Whismur, but I've always thought Loudred didn't really match their designs all that much beyond the sound theme they all have.aube the leaked Beta had integrated the evo lines, but hadn't switched Loudreds typing yet by mistake.

Snubbull is the weirdest pokemon IMO. it was meant to be psychic type, became fairy type, could have been a legendary maybe? and is known as "the fairy pokemon", but it's a pink bulldog? idk, I want to know what the intention really was behind it.
Well... Unown being pure Normal at first is interesting, since that can mean they designed it totally around Hidden Power, which might have been a whole different gimmick all together, so Unown could retain its STAB. I don't think Misdreavus not being Ghost/Dark has anything to do with balance (Especially since the region after we got Sableye who is Dark/Ghost and 4 Water/Ground types you can totally solo the region with). I think Misdreavus not being part Dark has to do with the design aspect (Since Misdreavus is one of the least creepy looking Ghost types, they might have decided it doesn't fit the evil aestetic, compared to Gengar for).
@HoopsandHipHop cool vid as always, hoops! I am curious how we know some of this; also if I buy a ridge wallet with your link, will you shave your beard?
It's the same reason Solgaleo is psychic steel type, psychic type in alchemy is related to the sun... Sun = element AU or Gold = Psychic (eg. Golduck, Sabrina's marsh badge, the colour of the Abra line, etc...)
You really saying Sunflora doesnt suit Pyschic? Whaaaa it fits very well i think 👀💧 i love Sunflora 😭
It'd be cool if some of these alternate typings get revisted as Regional Variants.
I don’t got a walot just a walittle
A psychic flower is a great callback to Star trek Voyager with the psychic potted plant lol. I'd have loved a grass/psychic to use in gen 2
Yet it would make it have a 4x weakness to Bug.
@@haydenlaw1484 Thus damaging its current, very prestigious, placement in the meta? Lol
Umbreon being poison type makes since given its Pokédex.
Yeah it is. But I'll be honest, I like that they made it Dark type. I do hope we get a Poison type Eevee evolution too though. I know it isn't very likely, but I can dream.
Oh man, I wish Sunflora kept the psychic type. It could have used any help sent its way.
Right??
But that would give it a 4x Bug weakness, which would hurt it more than help it.
@@haydenlaw1484 It's already super weak, bugs are taking it down anyway 🤷♀️
@@AMHerbert13 That's exactly my point. Making it Grass/Psychic would make it worse, because it isn't very good to start with. That would give it a double weakness when it already has 5 weaknesses due to being a Grass type. It also doesn't help that it's BST is only 425.
Normal type has always seemed like a way to say, "yeah, there's nothing special about this one. Basically a real life animal with a few design changes."
Then why aren't the Fish Pokemon like Magikarp and Feebas not Water/Normal types.
Dang dude that beard is looking good
Jellicent used to be a pure water type, but was made a ghost type for balancing. This also means that it was given a more ghostly design.
True. Stunfisk was also supposed to be a Water type, but was made Electric type because of balance (And because Unova had enough Water types as is).
Hoops: well, you see, these pokemon had these types in the middle of the development because the game still wasn't out and the devs didn't decide ultimately... Me, an intellectual: *Magnemite was an electric type in gen 1*
3:13 that ""theory"" is so circumstancial. Psychic wasn't just the legendary type, unless you want to count slowpoke as legendary then....
Possible beta Sunflora reasoning: Psychic type = light type Sun = light
I've got to say you make some really unique content. If you could make any changes to the type chart, including adding a new type, what would they be?
Probably something akin to a Holy type, Aura, Ether, Void, whatever the name would be. Lucario would get it, healing moves and various status moves would be assigned to it. Certain normal type and fairy type moves or Pokemon would move over (Audino being one). I think it would be super effective against Dark, Normal, Fairy, and Poison, and be weak to Electric, Ghost, and fighting. It would be immune to Psychic. This is all just immediate thoughts. This could be OP as Arceus or something lol. But yeah. I think a decent meta counter and counter to poison directly, and to dark, could be neat. And then adding a defense to Fairy would be cool.
That is a neat idea. Dark type is the evil type in Japan. Sort of like the light and dark type of monsters from Yu-Gi-Oh.
@@snubbulltrubbull1133 Thanks. Yeah, like that.
@@BigCowProductions i think the immunity to psychic is a bit much, psychic is already ineffective against dark. maybe a psychic resistance?
@@iraflopera Yeah that might be better.
The Most underrated Poketuber!
Aggron being pure steel would have made it SOOO much more viable
02:45 I've always felt that Americans are being mislead by Normal Type's name and misinterpreting its meaning. I believe "Normal Type" (named "Colorless Energy" in the TCG) is meant to be seen as the NEUTRAL type, lacking a specific elemental specialty (contrasting all the other types), but not at all being un-special or un-powerfull. By this view, it makes perfect sense for Unown to have been Normal Type, with its only move being Hidden Power, a Normal Type move that uses random different types to attack. By this view, it also makes perfect sense that some extremely ancient and powerfull Pokemon such as Arceus and Regigigas are Normal Type.
I like that. Makes sense, too, as Dark is more evil type
@@BigCowProductions The Dark type is called the evil type in Japanese.
@@haydenlaw1484 Yeah, that's why I mentioned that :p
then why are there pokemon with normal as a second type, like pyroar or drampa?
@@mezzovii Cuz it is more neutral and more muted than having the primary type maybe.
But wait. Swablu being pure normal type makes sense. That is NOT a normal bird. Those are some fluffy clouds
3:41 Especially given that Snubbull ended up as a normal type instead of a Psychic just to be yet again changed to a Fairy Type a whopping 17 years later. The poor pup has been to a lot(of type changes). 8:24 Not that the last consideration stopped them from adding Sableye a generation and Spiritomb yet another gen later though. Also given the only place you can find Misdreavus in Gen 2 is friggen Mt Silver it breaking the game would've been a non-problem anyway... Also why doesn't Morty use one? I know that's not the point of the video but it's still one of the most baffling gymleader team ommissions ever...
Good points all around lol
I think Misdreavus being part Dark isn't because of balance issues anyways, but more a decision based on design aspect, since Misdreavus doesn't look very dark now does it (Imo, its one of the cutest Ghost types). Considering Dark is called Evil in Japan, they might have chosen to get rid of Dark because of its design.

wrong about the pure Flying, the first pure Flying happened in gen 4 with Arceus in his Flying-Type form
I bet sunflora was gonna be psychic because if they were really gonna use the poison stone for umbreon then they definitely would’ve used the sun stone for espeon. And if the sun stone gives psychic powers I could see sunflora the sunflower getting psychic powers from the sun stone. I can see a similar thing happening with natu and xatu if natu were pure flying
What about pokémon who got their types changed in a gen?

My opinion: delibird should have been water-ice because to me, the flying type doesnt make sense. Misdreavus would have been fine either way being pure ghost type or ghost-dark. I still don't understand what's the relation between Granbull and fairy type .-.
Many people draw relations between Granbull and Legends on the British Isles about monstrous dogs that guard points of interests, mostly graves, from nightfall to sundawn. Humans can only see them at the edge of their vision at blush though. And Britannia's Mythology is simple. If something is supernatural, it's a fairy. Or at least subservient to a fairy. No matter how monstrous it may be. I know that's not exactly satisfying.
@@catriamflockentanz y'know that gen 2 pokemon didn't have huge lore and crazy origins like pokemon of newer generations, right?
