Its worth noting that small birds spend a lot of energy to produce loud noises with their tiny bodies, so their call not only functions to mark territory, but also as an indicator of fitness. If a bird is able to sing loudly and frequently, that means its a strong healthy bird and other birds shouldn't want to intrude upon its territory, while potential mates will be attracted.

@petersmythe64622 жыл бұрын
What the harpy eagles were doing was actually very advanced. There were many groups of monkeys and the eagles over time noticed some groups of monkeys adapted faster to their new predators than others. So rather than hide and swoop in on an unsuspecting monkey the eagles would perch or fly above and screech to let the monkeys know they were there. If the monkeys reacted in the defensive manor you covered here they would fly on to the next group and try them, if they did nothing that means they hadn't adapted and would attack.

So while they did use it in the incorrect way, it is still a word in the English language. Just thought I’d clear that up for anyone learning English who stumbles upon this, because I’m also learning other languages and appreciate the help too. I’ve been to STRI a couple of times for the educational tour - the scientists who work there are well informed about the predators on the island - which include some of the 5 big cat species native to Panama. Parts of the island are quite close to the mainland, and are an easy swim for the cats. Logging of the huge trees that rise above the forest canopy has had a terrible effect on the Harpy Eagle population, since those highest trees are where they nest. Barro Colorado has several of those giant trees in the forest, so it was decided to try to induce a pair of eagles to stay and nest there. Their hunting area is by no means limited to the island ( wings, people! ) and, since they are native to the country, they are part of a healthy ecosystem. Sorry, monkeys!

Finches and sparrows were I live are ultra fit then. Them little guys are so loud in respect to their size.

There are no 5 species of big cats anywhere in the Americas, in fact not even the puma is considered a big cat by some. But good to know that they simply didn't introduce them for stupid reasons..
@@juanlima2763 jaguar?
The monkeys had no place to run away, it was only à matter of time before à predator spot them out and or the island becoming too small for howler big troops of monkeys.
@@juanlima2763 Valid quibble.
Agreed, but 5 big cats in Panama? Im assuming you're referring to just 5 cats? Because the only big cats in the Americas are jaguars and pumas. I think maybe ocelots are the next largest.
