  • From what I’ve heard, by a Canadian woman who was with him, he was never on the 5th floor. He wasn’t even at the hotel during the time stamp on the video, so for those who are making fun of a dead person who happened to die a horrific death and who’s parents have to live with this horror, please check your conscience. • Okay, first of all, my comment was on what the woman at the beginning of the video said, but since you went there, let's go there then. If I come to your country and find that it's illegal to (for whatever reason) have sex and that having sex would be an offense that was punishable by death, you would NOT see me in the streets trying to hit on women or pick up prostitutes. Now, to you, it may seem like tearing a poster was meaningless, but in NK, they would beg to differ. Is it a stupid and somewhat unfairly strict law? Yes, it is, but when you visit ANY foreign country, aren't you expected to abide by said country's laws, irrespective of what you thought of them?? I'm sorry he died, but kid STILL made a VERY stupid decision in the worst place imaginable that he could!!

  • This story is absolutely horrifying, however it delivers a tough but important lesson to learn for people who are blessed to be born and raised in very humanistic societies: not all the world works the same as your countries. There are dangers in the world which cannot be stopped by a lawyer or money. People from the West should realize this and learn to keep safe and reasonable. Otto’s fate could happen to anyone of that tour group. There are lands which should absolutely not be treated as an exotic vacation. Obligatory personal anecdote: I worked at a hostel in Moscow for some time, guests were mostly foreigners. The amount of American college kids doing the “Vodka train” tours, for whom it was clearly their first time abroad, was seriously concerning for me. No doubt they were sold this whole thing as a “fun vacation” by the aggressive marketing in the US, while in reality the long-distance trains in Russia are often dangerous to be at (predatory drunks with knives and desperate for money are a fairly common occurence), and NO ONE speaks English on them, they’re full of undereducated village folk who still believe USSR was great and America is ruled by evil reptilians. I don’t want to imagine what could happen to a foreign 18 year old on that train, especially with alcohol involved. Money-hungry tour sellers who purposefully omit full information on risks in order to sell more tickets are an evil by themselves.

    @jeremiahsmith916@jeremiahsmith9163 жыл бұрын
    • lol so you are saying USA is ''humanistic'' society with serial killers lurking everywhere and where you can't even walk a parrot at broad day light, not even mention nights?srsly... And why are long-distance trains in Russia dangerous? the most beautiful experience are those trains and friendly people you meet along the way. Are you talking about USA trains maybe where everyone holds guns and knives? seriously what stupid prejudices people from America have and spread about other countries. Shame on yourself. and YEAH - USSR WAS GREAT, and people were much safer than in such ''deRmocratic'' society packed with crimes and capitalistic manipulators. Better learn something about world for real instead of listening to USA propaganda (from where you are probably) about other parts of the world and Russia especially since amounts of lies about USSR and RUssia that USA has been producing over the years is unbelieveably horrific.

  • He could have taken a picture of the poster instead of trying to take the poster ! That was wrong and a terrible violation ! Here in America when I was young and lived with my mother , we were robbed 4 TIMES ! They were Hispanic and on heroin ! All different people but Puerto Rican anyway ! I was sad and angry and i hated these violators to a point that at 12 years old I got a job off the books after school but at age 14 I was able to work legally because my boss helped me get my working papers but now I was being robbed again ! I was saving all my money to help my mother move out of that drug infested neighborhood that had once been so safe and beautiful ! I was also saving for college but I was now bringing home less money because now I was being robbed by the government with taxes ! That was MY MONEY ! I EARNED IT ! So I began to see the truth about America ! It is corrupt ! So I understand how angry the North Korean government felt ! How dare Otto go there and think he is so damn special and try to take something THAT DID NOT BELONG TO HIM ! I do not feel that the family should have been compensated because their son was trying to commit a thief ! I live in America and not once did I ever have a class on being prim and proper AND NOT STEAL ! After JFK screwed the school system the schools became violent and dangerous ! Students here in America MUST BE GIVEN AN HOUR DAILY ON HOW TO BEHAVE , Instead of useless gym classes ! Also the students graduated and the majority don’t know what to do with their lives because they weren’t taught financing nor investments nor real estate nor the stock market ! They are not even encouraged to become doctor lawyers policemen and so forth ! American schools just spit out students with no logic reason and no common sense ! I don’t mean any did respect but the truth is that OTTO WAS WRONG ! He knew the rules and didn’t obey them ! He should NOT have gone to the fifth floor to begin with ! His companions should have been punished too for having the nerve to break the rules and going to the fifth floor but at least they did not try to steal anything ! The poster is just an excuse! People say he deserves it to make others angry! What people are really saying that is true, is, Why he went there? Why if you already go to visit hell you brake the only rule they have? The answer is, because when people are young and ignorant, they do not fear the world! To be a prison from another country and you’re being treated the same or worse than a terrorist is insane. • It's astonishing how many people are blaming this kid for being brutally murdered by a corrupt dictator. His immaturity cost him his life? No. The reality is that this Korean regime could have picked any American at random and killed them, framing them for whatever crime it felt like. And now even our despicable president is failing to take the side of our own citizen who was brutally detained and murdered.

    • Jeff, I find your comment rather perplexing. Iran may not be a perfect country today, but it surely isn't the xenophobic mecca of intolerance your statement makes it out to be. In-fact, historically for the majority of the lands inhabited time (Iran now - previously Persia) it was home to rather impressive levels of moderation. For instance (in-case you're genuinely curious) During and on-wards of the greco-persian war, Persia, was extremely moderate in-regards to today's standards on multiculturalism. Outsider religions weren't persecuted, but in-fact welcomed (Especially in regards to trade). Something a lot of other empires at the time simply didn't do. A note-worthy example would be the Greek's by stark contrast, a very close-minded and xenophobic people. Furthermore, when Persia was finally annexed by the Islamic Conquest in the 7th century; they acknowledged the great successes of past doctrine and carried on a lot of the same ideologies. On the topic of your original comment, one very important ideology being their acknowledgement of other faiths. Even going as far as to institute law classifying them as a protected class. Allowing them to to continue living and practice their faith freely (Christians being a big one). With that said, I think it's unfair to allow less than half a century of history to warp your opinion on a country, or rather; a people as a whole.
