Rule number 1 don’t go to North Korea. Rule number 2 repeat it to yourself Rule number 3 remember rule number 1
and finally, rule number 4: DON'T GO TO FIFTH FLOOR.

From what I’ve heard, by a Canadian woman who was with him, he was never on the 5th floor. He wasn’t even at the hotel during the time stamp on the video, so for those who are making fun of a dead person who happened to die a horrific death and who’s parents have to live with this horror, please check your conscience. More importantly, don't steal there.
Yeah, there's no reason whatsoever to ever set your foot in that country. If they'll ever get "liberated", like DDR, the horrors of what's been going on there will stun the world. Apparently there's a blooming black market for human meat, people disappearing at a regular basis, ending up at the plates of their fellow citizens...no joke.

I feel really bad for his roommate. A seemingly funny joke (even Otto laughed) that has weighed on him. Even after Otto’s passing, I know he’s haunted by it.
It reminds me of The Day The Music Died. Waylon Jennings made a joke to Buddy Holly. Buddy had joked that he hoped Waylon’s bus crashed, and Waylon joked back about the plane. He never fully forgave himself.
Screw them both. Stay home, americans

I know, right! This guy had no common sense. It's hard to feel sorry for him.
He is the victim of a very corrupt country. Seems more like you are a sociopath if you think it's hard to feel sorry for him being tortured for something as meaningless as taking down a poster. The guy was adventurous and wanted to adventure to places few people see. I guess it's easy to judge others when you choose to remain in your tiny little bubble behind a keyboard.
Okay, first of all, my comment was on what the woman at the beginning of the video said, but since you went there, let's go there then. If I come to your country and find that it's illegal to (for whatever reason) have sex and that having sex would be an offense that was punishable by death, you would NOT see me in the streets trying to hit on women or pick up prostitutes. Now, to you, it may seem like tearing a poster was meaningless, but in NK, they would beg to differ. Is it a stupid and somewhat unfairly strict law? Yes, it is, but when you visit ANY foreign country, aren't you expected to abide by said country's laws, irrespective of what you thought of them?? I'm sorry he died, but kid STILL made a VERY stupid decision in the worst place imaginable that he could!!
@@cocogoat1111you saw the video. The woman said it's not just a poster it has their leader on it that makes it treason. You can't go to the White House and steal a picture of the president and not be jailed for it.

Rich The citizens aren’t the issue. They are being deprived of their basic human rights too. They are innocent in this. It’s the government who’s evil and at fault.
I don’t think it was even physical torture, his face isn’t even showing any signs of physical torture. Maybe it was brainwashing. He sure was acting like any one of those coo-coo brained north Koreans just two weeks after his arrest.
Two or three weeks after his arrest he sounded just like any other crazy North Korean. Like he had been living there his whole life and “was even ashamed of his behavior.” 😦
Why would anyone go to this country?! I can’t imagine the fear he experienced and the pain his family has suffered💔
This story is absolutely horrifying, however it delivers a tough but important lesson to learn for people who are blessed to be born and raised in very humanistic societies: not all the world works the same as your countries. There are dangers in the world which cannot be stopped by a lawyer or money. People from the West should realize this and learn to keep safe and reasonable. Otto’s fate could happen to anyone of that tour group. There are lands which should absolutely not be treated as an exotic vacation. Obligatory personal anecdote: I worked at a hostel in Moscow for some time, guests were mostly foreigners. The amount of American college kids doing the “Vodka train” tours, for whom it was clearly their first time abroad, was seriously concerning for me. No doubt they were sold this whole thing as a “fun vacation” by the aggressive marketing in the US, while in reality the long-distance trains in Russia are often dangerous to be at (predatory drunks with knives and desperate for money are a fairly common occurence), and NO ONE speaks English on them, they’re full of undereducated village folk who still believe USSR was great and America is ruled by evil reptilians. I don’t want to imagine what could happen to a foreign 18 year old on that train, especially with alcohol involved. Money-hungry tour sellers who purposefully omit full information on risks in order to sell more tickets are an evil by themselves.
lol so you are saying USA is ''humanistic'' society with serial killers lurking everywhere and where you can't even walk a parrot at broad day light, not even mention nights?srsly... And why are long-distance trains in Russia dangerous? the most beautiful experience are those trains and friendly people you meet along the way. Are you talking about USA trains maybe where everyone holds guns and knives? seriously what stupid prejudices people from America have and spread about other countries. Shame on yourself. and YEAH - USSR WAS GREAT, and people were much safer than in such ''deRmocratic'' society packed with crimes and capitalistic manipulators. Better learn something about world for real instead of listening to USA propaganda (from where you are probably) about other parts of the world and Russia especially since amounts of lies about USSR and RUssia that USA has been producing over the years is unbelieveably horrific.
USSR was never “great” and neither was the United States.

I was also saving for college but I was now bringing home less money because now I was being robbed by the government with taxes ! That was MY MONEY ! I EARNED IT ! So I began to see the truth about America ! It is corrupt ! So I understand how angry the North Korean government felt ! How dare Otto go there and think he is so damn special and try to take something THAT DID NOT BELONG TO HIM ! I do not feel that the family should have been compensated because their son was trying to commit a thief ! I live in America and not once did I ever have a class on being prim and proper AND NOT STEAL ! After JFK screwed the school system the schools became violent and dangerous ! Students here in America MUST BE GIVEN AN HOUR DAILY ON HOW TO BEHAVE , Instead of useless gym classes ! Also the students graduated and the majority don’t know what to do with their lives because they weren’t taught financing nor investments nor real estate nor the stock market ! They are not even encouraged to become doctor lawyers policemen and so forth ! American schools just spit out students with no logic reason and no common sense ! To be a prison from another country and you’re being treated the same or worse than a terrorist is insane. He shouldn’t have been in that condition anyways because he didn’t even SERVE HIS SENTENCE, so it goes to show that the torture probably started before his trial while he was innocent.
@@novaxo9827 how do u know he broke rules? The only scene they show is so unclear, 😐
Yes.
I'm amazed they had like no surveillance or alarms on the floor they restrict guests from visiting.
Am I mistaken or is that the same guard escorting all these captives into the courtroom?
who tf goes to North Korea to party
Otto the dumbass that's who. Lol!!
an idiot.
Communist students in search of evidence that their political beliefs are sustainable.

He may have been smart, but his immaturity cost him his life.
michiganmom857 Exactly!!
It's astonishing how many people are blaming this kid for being brutally murdered by a corrupt dictator. His immaturity cost him his life? No. The reality is that this Korean regime could have picked any American at random and killed them, framing them for whatever crime it felt like. And now even our despicable president is failing to take the side of our own citizen who was brutally detained and murdered.
@P for Potato_77 what rule did he break? Do you really believe he tore down a poster? In any actual fair trial there would have been insufficient evidence to establish that.
You have to follow the rules. Specially in North Korea.
Ummmmm nothing smart about what he did at all.
It seems likely the that he suffered severe brain damage from his brain being deprived of oxygen for a prolonged period of time. The North Koreans admitted to sedating him at some point not long after his trail, maybe they accidentally sedated him too well. Then they didn’t want him to officially “die” at their hands so eventually let him be returned home. Tragic story, horrible way to go. RIP to Otto.
He probably was guilty of what they said he did. He put himself in this situation by going to North Korea. Accountability
No he was a communist which is why he went with that tour guide with the hammer ans sickle tattoo and why he wanted the poster. That makes the irony more delicious.
I just want to know the whole story, what they drugged him with, why they framed him and what they did. I feel so bad for this guy and it was unfair

I admit i must be weird but the thought of actually even booking a trip to North Korea, deliberately going to the 5th floor where youre instructed not to go, taking video of it and then stealing a poster in a country like that is just so far off my radar its crazy, like wtf goes through peoples heads? Youre literally in North Korea, just blows my mind
Need to have balls to sneak into the 5th floor dood.
All balls no brain
Took parts of his brain dood
ッTehEpikNuwbie you needed to have stupidity. They said don't go to the 5th floor.
Where's the proof that he actually did it? That black, hooded figure in the grainy video is about a foot shorter than Warmbier. Do you think it was him because he "confessed?!" They threatened his life. And guess what? Even though he played along and confessed to a crime he didn't commit, they still murdered him.
ッTehEpikNuwbie Balls, I would call it stupidity. There is a difference between being brave and being reckless.
Who in his right mind travels to such a hellhole?
@Guy Maybe we need more people to stop talking about this country as if it is that mysterious or seductive. Torturing people for real and not having human rights is not a horror movie that is fun, it is real hell and should be treated as such in any information we spread regarding this country!
Otto was stupid. I don't want to disrespect the dead but who doesn't know what north korea does to their own. Why even go there? Go join the white helmets and actually help people if you have such a "playing with fire" mentality. At least you would die content if something happens.
I read that this was Otto's third visit to N. Korea.
He should not go to fifth floor at the very first place.
Rest in peace brother , can’t imagine the pain you when through . No human should ever go thought what you did
You can tell that it was scripted smh its so obvious that a non native English speaker wrote what he said.
The scripted confession was full of crap. Otto was stealing the poster to put in his church in USA. Every American church is waiting to hang stolen N Korean posters on their walls.
Nikolas Hipolito wtf does him dying have to do what I said
Nikolas Hipolito he said the testimony was written by them. Not that he didn't die

"going to North Korea to have fun". Thats like going to Iran to find religious diversity and tolerance :D
Don't want to sound biased but comparing to the rest of the middle eastern countries, Iran is quite diverse in terms of religion and tolerant. And over 70 percent Iranian Women complete their higher education which is way more than most western countries including USA.
don't you tell me Iran is diverse and gives women any kind of edge in the workplace. So delusional...
Western media portrays Iran in a bad way when infact Iran was funding militias in Iraq that helped fight ISIS. Saudi Arabia is 10x worse when it comes to diversity and tolerance.
Jeff Gazetti LoL, brilliant 👌😂💀
Jeff, I find your comment rather perplexing. Iran may not be a perfect country today, but it surely isn't the xenophobic mecca of intolerance your statement makes it out to be. In-fact, historically for the majority of the lands inhabited time (Iran now - previously Persia) it was home to rather impressive levels of moderation. For instance (in-case you're genuinely curious) During and on-wards of the greco-persian war, Persia, was extremely moderate in-regards to today's standards on multiculturalism. Outsider religions weren't persecuted, but in-fact welcomed (Especially in regards to trade). Something a lot of other empires at the time simply didn't do. A note-worthy example would be the Greek's by stark contrast, a very close-minded and xenophobic people. Furthermore, when Persia was finally annexed by the Islamic Conquest in the 7th century; they acknowledged the great successes of past doctrine and carried on a lot of the same ideologies. On the topic of your original comment, one very important ideology being their acknowledgement of other faiths. Even going as far as to institute law classifying them as a protected class. Allowing them to to continue living and practice their faith freely (Christians being a big one). With that said, I think it's unfair to allow less than half a century of history to warp your opinion on a country, or rather; a people as a whole.

Why didn't they ask for an autopsy?
If he did that, I think he could be charged with a warning or one month in jail to educate him to not to do that. Or a fine. And let him go.
