Matyáš Pilin is going to speak about one of his biggest passions: languages. He has travelled through Estonia and Finland as well as hiked alone in the French mountains in order to immerse himself in the local culture and has attempted to learn many of the world’s most challenging languages such as Mandarin and Estonian. He's not only an excellent student but also a talented orator, which has led him to participate in an international debate at Yale university last year. Today, he wants to offer some insight on how to learn languages quickly and effectively and help us understand how polyglots manage to find the time and energy to learn so many languages in one lifetime.

    • If you want to improve your English faster, you need to take some daily dictations. Just watch any video you like and type down as many phrases as you can on your computer or write them down on your notebook without stopping the video. One of the most common issues English learners struggle with are pronounciation and grammar mistakes. By listening and writing at the same time every day, you'll be able to relate sounds with words, so your brain will catch every single sound and grammar structure as well. At first it is going to be a little bit hard but don't worry, you will get used to it sooner than expected.

Mainly I'm listening to english speaker.. for they speak very fast and i wasn't able get any thing out of theirs convo... but now Words are being grasped by my mind to some extent. So the point what I'm trying to make here is that tell me if there is somthing more I can do in my expedition?

    • @@user-ki3eo9qu4r Well... When I watch an English video, I try to catch every single word and I sometimes imitate the speaker to get a grip on that accent. I think in English and whatever I see in English videos, I catch it all in English. I often talk in English with myself and friends in different accents such as American and British. I take special care of not committing any kind of Grammer and vocabulary mistake while writing, texting and speaking. This helped me a lot and it is super easy. You just have to imitate the native speaker and try by yourself and also taking care of "not committing any kind of Grammer and vocabulary mistakes." Alright?

  • The key principles: 1. Message: Try to understand the information by the context, you learn for real when you build the meaning of the words. That's exactly what we do when we are learning our mother tongue. 2. Importance: Make the target language important. The best way to do that is choosing the target language to do some important daily activities inspite of using your native language. 3. Observation: Listen more and more and more, as much as you can in order to perceive the vocabulary and the way the natives speak the language. 4. Comprehension: The more you comprehend, the more you learn. Don't worry about acumulating words, but comprehending them.

I was born in Tunisia and I can tell that what helped me learn these languages at only 23, is the fact that I live with languages and do like if they were my native ones. So I never mind watching a film in Turkish, seeing a cooking show in Italian, listening to Russian songs, reading articles for my researches in Spanich, asking for a greek sandwich in Greek and helping my French friends learn Arabic, my actual native language, so that they do the same.

  • Matyáš thank you for sharing your brilliant approach to hearing, speaking, comprehending a foreign language! I have a bachelors in Spanish which isn’t saying much considering it took me three years to master phonetics, dialects, sentence structure, verb conjugation, along with the potential 13 different ways you can conjugate a specific verb. I think it is the simplest language for me to learn because it possesses what I call pure vowels. I am a classically trained vocalist and yet I was trained primarily in my native tongue, English. Whatever choir I was in we always had a 3 to 5 minute vocal warm-up. We would sing five specific vowel sounds at a specific pitch. Naturally these vowel sounds are the American phonetic spellings: eh, ee, ah, oh, oo. Those are the same vowel Sounds that are found in Spanish and Latin. As time went on I became very attracted to singing popular radio songs in Spanish and Latin. But I never mastered speaking and responding quickly until I was placed in a foreign country; Costa Rica. And at the end of my bachelors I lived and studied Costa Rica for 11 straight weeks, four hours a day. The professor told us she would send us home if she caught us speaking in English after a third warning. My Costa Rican host family, thank God, spoke no English whatsoever. So nearly 6 hours to 8 hours a day I was never around anyone to speak English to. Had I not done this Full immersion, my bachelor degree in Spanish would’ve been worthless.

  • What a simple and fantastic model presented by Matyáš Pilin! I couldn't agree more. It's interesting how the idea of finding the "parent speaker" as a source of meaningful input, provider of feedback and somebody allowing you to test your hypotheses about what might be correct (or not) is actually similar to the way children ACQUIRE (rather than LEARN) languages. I also believe that risk-taking while learning a new language is mostly productive (the accompanying anxiety is often of the facilitating type).

Getting the message of what we're communicating is quite important for the development of our use of English. • I live in Finland, and I have Vietnamese girlfriend and I am moving to live and work in Vietnam in the future, this is a great motivator to learn. Travelling there few times, connecting and spending time with local people helps a lot also. I use duolingo for this. It is structured very well and makes learning easy. I tried all kind of internet sites first, but most of them are pretty bad and lacks good structure and progression. In Duolingo they have managed to make very good progressing system, which actually works and you don't lose motivation easily, and I have made massive improvements during the last year. I have about 2 years before I move there and I am confident I can speak pretty fluent Vietnamese at that time.

It was a stressful and slow way to learn. On my third language now it's a lot smoother knowing how language works. Best way to learn is with lots of CONTEXT and OBSERVATION. Like babies 😇

  • What I do to practice English is watch videos that I am interested in. I try to learn something new beyond the English language. The more I learn the more interested I become in the language. It is not as easy as it sounds because we have many distractors and occupations, however, I still think a language is not all about phonetics and grammar but culture, friends, and fun. The World is too big to be static, let´s dream about getting to know the unknown.

As a native English speaker I found the speed he talked to be fine but as someone that lives in a non English speaking country I understand the issue perfectly and struggle to understand native speakers when they speak fast sometimes. Also he was probably both working to a time limit for the talk so trying to make sure he finished in time plus likely had some nerves that made him talk faster.
