  • My favorite part is how many of these players are complete hypocrites. They have no problem doing it themself but if somebody does it to their team then it’s disrespectful and uncalled for

  • I think the flashy dunks probably add more insult to injury than like a lazy meaningless layup or a three, but I understand them more. It's an entertainment sport. Fans came to watch a good game. If they get a windmill dunk out of a blowout, that's a good thing. There might be some kid at the only basketball game they'll ever see in their life and they might get to see something spectacular.

  • It’s the other way around for me: I feel respected when an enemy team plays their hardest until the game ends even if I’m losing by a lot. I feel disrespected when someone goes easy on me because they are winning by a lot.

    • In gaming, it's considered disrespectful to go easy on your opponent because you're basically saying "I'm so much better then you I don't even have to try and I'll win anyway". Respect is giving your best effort no matter what. If you get smoked, all the more reason to get better and come back next time.

It's the same problem in every sport. Why have regulation if you aren't allowed to play the same way during the whole game (including up to the end)!?

    • This is the specific incident that made me go “this unwritten rule is dumb as shit” and feel that players who react to it like that are especially soft. I get not showing up your opponent, I really do, but reacting so viciously to these meaningless baskets only comes from a place of broken egos and mishandled frustrations.

  • Clyde Frazier summed it up perfectly at the end "You're here to play the Game!". As long as there's time on the clock I'm shooting at the Basket. Especially if I'm winning a blowout at home I'm getting out the fancy stuff to celebrate. NBA is about entertainment just as much as it is about the Sport. Give the Fans what they paid for.

    • I agree, being from the UK I’ve never got this, you’re a professional athlete, you play to the end no matter what. In soccer often the game is clearly won and the other side still play 100% till the very last ball. The NBA is the only sport to do this, they should be ashamed to have that mentality.

  • I love the NBA but this is the only part that sucks about the sport - they all give up on the game sometimes 10 minutes before it's all over - in other sports they will fight tooth and nail until the last second, even if there's no chance they will make a chance, they will drag themselves closer. And it's so dumb because all it takes is a couple of stops and a few 3's to drop and a lead can be erased - and these players all know this from experience.

They likely wouldn’t care if they were winning. And the game doesn’t end until the clock runs out. It’s like they’re trying to put people down for winning, which is the definition of a sore loser

  • If you can't score in the remaining minutes because your lead is "too large", what is the point of being on the court? To stand around like a bunch of clowns? Either the rules need to be changed so the captain of the opposition team can call the game over early (and accept the loss) or teams play properly until the game is over.

Use that unreleased emotion to land some shots and play better defense and maybe you wouldn’t be on the losing end, every time I got mad at a winner I remembered this. I understand there’s an unwritten rule but the only reason they're acting on it is embarrassment, hence why there’s a lot of hypocrisy.

  • There are a lot of “unwritten rules” in certain sports. Still, I would rather deal with an NBA player making an extra basket that CAN’T HURT anyone than the STUPID ones in baseball. Deliberately throwing at a batter if it was done by the opposing pitcher, benches emptying to “protect” a player and other stuff.
