TOO MUCH POWER? 5 or 6 Outboard Engines Boat Trend
Boats are getting bigger AND more powerful! The trend for more outboard engines has grown in recent years with more boat brands equipping boats with 5 or even 6 outboard engines! The horsepower is INSANE with 5 or 6 Mercury 450 engines on board!! Let's take a look at some of the boat brands showing off the Quint & Sextet outboard engine trend - Scout Boats (530 LXF), Nor-Tech Boats (452 Superfish), Midnight Express (60 Open), Cigarette Racing Team (59 Tirranna) and, of course, HCB Yachts (65 Estrella). Is this too much power... or not enough??
Since we did this video Mercury came out with their new 600hp engine and some boat builders are using 2 or 3 of those engines to replace 5 or 6 of their 400hp or 450hp engines. Will be interesting to see if boaters like more engines or less engines with more horsepower!

I'm no navy captain but I'd never go out into the ocean with less than 2 engines. I don't care what it cost you need to have that reassurance if 1 fails you can still limp back.
Oh yeah, definitely feels better having two!!
Most ocean going container ships have a single motor driving the propeller.
2 of the same outboards with the same hours with the same maintenance connected to the same electronics and use being used in the same conditions on the same gas. If one goes the other is almost certain to go, if not at the same time then not long after.
@@haneytr3s probably because the engines are the size of a small house
@@haneytr3sthey have multiple parts, engineers and techs to repair the boat if anything goes wrong
It reminds me of Star Trek starship designs and warp nacelles. You have scout ships with 1. Standard is 2. Dreadnought or very large ships is 3 or more. I remember as a young boy my Dad just had one but had a spare emergency outboard engine just in case. He had to use it once, it was a very small one and not very powerful but we got back safe.
🌠🌌🔭💫🤩
You didn’t explain. Is their actually added benefits of having multiple engines ?
Like real added benefits. Not 5+ extra mph.
Short answer, no… mostly vanity. There are lots of good comments also addressing it
Looks like more that can go wrong to me, but if you can afford to own any of these boats the cost to fix one ain't going to hurt you.
that’s probably true on both!
that’s probably true on both!
10!
I’m sure there’s a boat out there with 10! 🤣
So if you put an in board into these boats with 6 outboards would they be slower?
Outboards are usually faster than inboards (less weight) but question is how many do you need? Will 5 vs 4 be measurably faster? At what point are you overpowering the boat? 🤔
@@MyBoatLife ahhhh very interesting. For me it’s mostly ascetics I think the cleaner look of an inboard is favourable!
@@MyBoatLife I'd also think having the props so close side by side most definitely decreases their effectiveness.
I would imagine 6x slower
Excess while some people can’t even afford a single engine
there’s a lot of $$ on the stern of these boats for sure
Anything more than 4 mains and a small backup is too many. IDC if it's outboards OR inboards. I mean, SOME of the 5-motor outboards look alright, but the 6-motor boats all just completely shit their proportions away.
There are a few boats using 6 mercury 600’s now - THAT looks crazy! 🤑
Never too much power if you can pay it !!!
… IF you can pay for it!! 😂
Yes but it looks ridiculous
Screw the noisy outboards. Put two big block engines producing 2,200 H.P. down below and have effortless speed with reliability and quiet.
That’s what we have… well a bit less HP & not totally quiet but probably much better 😊
Unless you fish in the WIDE open ocean meaning 20 miles off sore you do not need anything above a 150
Yep
There must be a point where perhaps the forth or sixth engine won't give you more than like a 5knot top speed. Its ok to flex but stupidity is not cool
I think you’re right that there’s a point of diminishing return
Imagine a boat with SIX outboard 400 hp motors tops out at 72!! Lol my 2001 ranger does 60mph with ONE mercury optimax. Specs are absolute dog shit on these bigger boats don’t waste ur $!
They’re probably more concerned with the 👀😱 factor
If you’re not running at least 10 outboards don’t even talk to me PEASANTS! Joking, that’s a bit absurd
😂😂🤪
Yeah my bass boat goes 8mph slower with a 150 on it lol talk about a waste of 1 mill
Point of diminishing return
What power? That's just more weight and drag ,you will get smoked by a boat with the same single outboard and less fuel haha
Yeah there’s def a point of diminishing return
If only it more than 6 engines .. so let down. Meh …
😂
Too much wealth, too much pollution. Equal distribution of wealth. No one should have this kind of money when others have none
they definitely have some money (and gas) to burn
Too many communists who are lazy, stupid, entitled or a mixture of all 3.
You can thank property taxes for that. That’s what forces everyone into a system where other people control the work tempo. Continual expansion and excess. If you understand.
