We're chatting with the Barred Owl cam host (and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited) Jim Carpenter about these incredible birds that have nested in his yard for decades! We'll cover what it's like to live next to these charismatic owls, take some questions from the chat, and of course, reveal this year's names for the owlets as voted on by the cam community.
Thank you for this! Love the names …. Also enjoyed hearing about the behind the scenes stories explaining how the setup was done. Looks like a lot of work. Loved watching the owlets this season!
Thank you for the Barred Owl cam. Can't get enough of it.
I absolutely love watching these owls. I watch every day. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this! I've been watching the cam for a few years now, and it was really wonderful to get to "meet" a couple of the people behind it! Thank you for sharing so many interesting details about the history and set up of the nest box, and about these beautiful birds. Would love to see more livestreams/videos like this, really adds a lot to the experience of the cam. But I'm grateful for all your important work and resources, how amazing to be able to share this experience with others! Thank you again, from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and congrats Midnight, Star, and Moon! 🦉❤
I teach three- and four-year olds in central Vermont. We have been watching the nesting box since the first egg was laid this season. It has been such an exciting experience to see the owlets, to watch them grow and change, and to see what they eat! Thank you! Some of the children remembered last year's experience with the non-viable eggs.
Missed the live stream but very thankful to be able to watch it later. So interesting to hear the history of this amazing nest! Thank you Jim and Cornell!!! Look forward to seeing Midnight, Star and little Moon grow and fledge.
So glad for three healthy owlets this year, contrast to last year. Thanks for this livestream. I’ve been watching for years from South Carolina (we had a barred owl family behind our house, but we couldn’t see the nest) and the owl families have brought me so much joy. What amazing creatures. So grateful for everyone who has a part in making this livestream available. Thanks Jim C!
Hi from Chapel Hill, NC! I absolutely love your site! Getting to see the behavior of the owl parents and owlets is truly a gift to all of us. We started hearing a pair of barred owls here last year, and months later a 3rd owl's voice at a higher pitch. I found out for certain that I was hearing barred owls when I was at the street getting my mail and one owl glided from my neighbor's tree to her mailbox. I froze to watch her. She looked at me, and then decided she didn't need to watch me. Yea! A few minutes later she swooped down to a place in my neighbor's yard and flew off with a snake in her talons! (I didn't tell my neighbor; I didn't want to freak her out.)
This is just magical. We are obsessed with watching the little babes grow. Thanks for bringing this to us.
Addicted to monitoring the rearing of these owlets!! We have a steady presence of 7-10 adult Barred Owls on and about our home in western Nova Scotia .... easy to hear at night ... and their rare daytime appearances are generally announced by a Murder of crows - owls love crows for dinner!
absolutely LOVED all of this behind the scenes info. I've been watching this cam for years and am so happy to be able to see all the perspective of it's relation to the house and the info about how it's maintained and prepared. Please please please more of this behind the scenes. Just hearing the conversation about the owl family was so much fun. Thank you thank you!
I try to watch the birds several times a day. My grandson is in Jr high in Speedway, IN, so he gets to watch the barred owl especially.
Started watching last year. Their eggs never hatched. So excited to see that this year they did it. Going to enjoy watching them grow. Thank you.
I look forward to watching the WBU owl cam every year! Thanks so much!
Thank you! I watch them every day. They are such good parents. And I love the owlets names!
This is beautiful to be able to view these cuties. I only wish there was sound on the livestream so we could hear their vocalizations. It is wonderful to see that so many people are bird lovers!
Thank you, Jim and Charles. I love this cam and it's nice to see who set it up and see the installation. Like the names. I can't even remember which ones I voted for. These owlets are do adorable.
Hi! Nice to see and meet you! Thank you for what you do!
So Special 💕
This was such a great video, thank you for sharing it with us! They are so fun to watch! I had voted for Heidi, Holly and Hootie but I am happy for the first place winner :)
Me too, maybe next year we'll win!
I appreciate all the work that goes into this. Great job!
We have a pair of Barred owls near our home in Kansas. We built and hung a box in Jan 2022. No cameras installed on it. We may need to add flashing around the base of the tree like you did to keep the raccoons out.
Thank you Jim, Wild Bird Unlimited and Cornell Orthniology lab for sharing this wonderful view of the world of Barred owls. I get so excited when every spring rolls around anticipating the arrival of our beloved owlets.
Never saw the naming contest!😢
Mary from Minnesota. Love the names!
Hi. Lisa from Alabama
How long does a Barred owl live?
Are the dimensions/instructions/plans for building a box for our own owls online?
Will you band the babies for future identification?
SPOILER ALERT! The name set I voted for won. I'm surprised the second suggested set of names came so close. For me, it was no contest.
