House Finches in My Backyard

A pair of house finches built a nest in a corner on a patio cover in my backyard. I noticed it a week or two ago and finally decided to film it up close with my 360-degree camera. I used an "Insta360 ONE X" on a selfie stick that was mounted on a tripod so that I could just let it sit there filming while I left the backyard. That let the parents get used to the "camera intruder". It's a 360-degree camera that films an entire sphere. The editing software then allows me to choose what portion of the sphere will appear in my video. Therefore, the camera was completely still during the entire video and the apparent movement is just done by changing the point of view in the post-processing edit. Although the view appears to move around a lot, the camera actually remains stationary until the near end of the video.

  • That Amazing Vocalization & we've attracted them to our sanctuary. Their antics are hilarious and seems they're trying to really get a point across when being expressive.

  • I just had 3 fledgling House Finches leave the nest. Mom and Dad (who was the red shades) were always hovering nearby and gave me wonderful songs throughout the day. As soon as the last baby left, Mom and Dad left too and I miss their songs.

  • Thank you so much for setting this up. I recently discovered house finches. They were looking for a nesting site past couple years at my place but only settled for the fire sprinklers and a resting site instead. Needless to say, it got pretty messy! But I loved hearing one. Then its mate the following year. Here in the PNW. Thanks again for sharing. 💕☺️. You keep an immaculate yard too. And your doggies are precious!

  • Looks like a great secluded spot for the nest that will be hidden from most predators. How wonderful to have a nest right there. Thanks for the little glimpse into the beautiful side of nature.

  • My Red Finches had built & raised 2 different sets of babies this summer. My hubby was taking pictures threw each brew. The 2nd set flew away yesterday. The parents at least 4 adult Finches sang to me all day long start from 6am. I feed them high quality Song Bird Seeds plus another brand. None of them showed up this morning. Does anyone know if they'll come back to my deck again? Thanks!

  • I feed house finches on my balcony but one of them has the eye sickness and although I disinfect the feeder every couple of days I wonder if I should stop feeding them, so the rest of them wouldn't catch it buy accident. There are 6 pairs and I am in a condo complex and its nesting season and they seem to heavily rely on the feeder now. What would you recommend?

    @agnesrusso4192@agnesrusso4192 Жыл бұрын
    • I’m no expert. Hard to know if removing their food source would cause more harm than the possibility of catching the eye sickness. Hard decision, but least you are doing your best by disinfecting the feeder.

  • I have a house finch building a nest on my wreath on my front door. I honestly do not like it there bc I fear of the egg falling out. We open and closed the front door a lot. Any suggestion on what to do? The nest isn’t fully built yet and no eggs

    @b0diana@b0diana2 жыл бұрын
    • I'm no expert on their behavior, so I don't know what would happen if you moved it to a nearby, safer location. Maybe build a small temporary shelf for it if there isn't a good place to move it to within a short distance of the original location, but out of the way of your front door traffic. If you do move it, I suggest you wear rubber gloves to keep your human smell off the nest. If they don't continue to build on the moved nest, it probably means they found some other location on their own.

    • I did. If you read the description below the video, you'll see how I did it. The reason the momma bird was nervous at first was not because of any movement, because there wasn't any, but simply because there was a new object near her nest.

      @Lukionest@Lukionest3 жыл бұрын
    • I have the 360 camera as well. The person who filmed and posted this is accurately describing what they did if you wake the time to read their description. Once in position, the camera doesn't actually move; it's all done in post-processing
