While out asking random people to sing in NYC, I met Sydney! She walks up to sing, we get to talking before going into her song. That's when I notice the family Sydney walked up with are communicating through Sign Language! I was intrigued by the experience and after reaching out to the family I learned this...

  • Cried my way through this one! Sydney chose a perfect song for her voice and she sang it beautifully. Really love when people who have done very little public singing find the courage within to step up to the mic. What a sweet family story. My grandma was deaf and I worked in the deaf community in my early career, so I was especially moved by this whole video. Thank you all for the interview and additional context.

Hope you can keep on singing, Sydney! Silence is golden to us, that we adapt, changed and used our other senses to make up for the hearing losses. Thank you for this wonderful video! *waving hands in air in applause*

  • Thanks, my friend for highlighting Sydney and her family! I grew up with a father who was hearing impaired due to a condition called otosclerosis. He was able to “get by” with the hearing aids available at that time. A few years ago, I began losing my hearing at an alarming rate. This was during the pandemic and it took 2 years for the doctors to diagnose me with, you guessed it, otosclerosis. After surgery, I am joyful that I can hear Sydney sing! ❤️🌲🐿

I feel sad that her Mom can't hear her sing, but, her Mom's attitude about it all is a beautiful one! She doesn't sound sad, but, rather focuses on how proud she is of her children's and her father's musical accomplishments! Her Mom seems so beautiful inside!

  • People tend to forget that music is made of vibrations, and it's one of many things that connect us - Music transcends languages, and as you're learning now, even hearing abilities. Subwoofers, bass, etc. can often be popular amongst the deaf community - whether deaf or hoh, they can feel music as well as a hearing individual can. This is what makes the channel what it is. Stepping into new encounters with an open mind and seeing what comes out of it. Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about Deaf culture and for taking the time to share it with us. I hope you continue with such opportunities.

  • It's strange how sometimes the dots join up in life. I'm looking forward to today's upcoming Six Nations Rugby match between Ireland and Italy in Dublin and the Cranberries song 'Zombie ' came into my head as it's been adopted as a match anthem by Irish supporters and I remembered a really good version that was performed on your channel by a lovely shy girl from Ireland, Nollaig O'Connor. Found it, enjoyed it again and then surfed your channel looking for other magical moments and came across this performance and it's backstory I'm nearing 67 years of age, retired, and just found out that I'm a Coda. I always knew it was a term associated with music but until today i never knew that it was a noun with that particular meaning. My folks are long gone but when I heard the backstory a lot of memories came flooding back and I cried. Keep up your great work Reginald. Thank you.
