10 Tricks To Train Your Rat/Mouse First - Mini Tutorials

An updated video on what trick's I'd recommend training your rats first. The first few (spin, paw, come, jump through a hoop, jump to hand) are confidence building tricks, with come possibly being the most important "trick" you can train your rat.
Target, backup, and pull a string are also pretty easy to train, and have the added bonus of being the basis for many more complex tricks.
Finally, fetch and basketball can be considered a bit harder to teach, but are the basis and groundwork for just about every item-based trick out there. I recommend training your rat(s) tricks in this order as well, so by the time you get to fetch and basketball, your rat will already understand that their actions influence if they get a reward or not and you will know how your rat learns, and thus be able to train them more effectively.
Anyway, have fun training, and if you have any questions, feel free to comment them down below.
0:05 Spin
0:46 Paw
1:13 Come
2:49 Target
3:32 Jump through a hoop
4:46 Jump to hand
5:25 Backup
6:17 Pull a string
7:07 Fetch
8:39 Basketball

    • Can most mice do this or is your mouse special?

      @pb1209@pb12095 жыл бұрын
    • @@pb1209 they're rats. I'd say all hand-raised rats can learn these. And even rats that weren't hand raised could probably do them after some trust training. Rats learn quickly, especially with the reward system

    • It’s been a while since this comment but I just want to mention that I’ve never hand raised or bottle feed a rat. All my rats are either pet store rats, feeder rats, or rehomed rats from Craigslist or Facebook. Some have been shy, one even aggressive (one black and white girl in this video was a biter - never bit when training however and it was a great way to bond) but most have been perfectly friendly and many are cuddly and playful and love interacting outside of training. So yeah, where they come from makes no difference! Any rat can learn and in fact my 3 best learners all came from different places and were completely unrelated. As for mice they can learn any trick a rat can - the only difference is that mice tend to be more flighty so you may have to work more on comfort in whatever area you use to train first but they very much can learn anything a rat or dog can.

The "come" command reminds me of that lol. one day when I move out of home, I will have trillions of rats hiding around my house so that if someone insults me I can just click my tongue and my army of rats will advance on them.

  • Seeing how smart these little creatures are never gets old. When I first told my mom I had rats for pets she was pretty much repulsed, she fell in love with the dumbo ears and when she saw how loyal and affectionate they are she warmed up a bit more. Their intelligence and ability to be trained just like dogs was really what sealed the deal for her. She loves them as much as I do now. I can't wait to try the rope pulling trick, I've wanted to teach them that for so long but I couldn't find a video or instructions/tips that explained or showed it well enough until now. So cool!

Rats are demonized by people too I think they are cool animals I’d keep one but I have a boa so they’d just be on edge bc they smell each other. Rats are very high maintenance tho any rodent in general is but so can snakes tbh.

Thats maybe 5 minutes of work to get 4 different "tricks" on cue, and to set up good foundations for continued training. Its like when your training a puppy - drill one trick too much and they get bored. Teach multiple tricks each sessions and soon you'll have a dog that loves training and learns quickly!

  • I can't thank you enough for this video. Teaching my rats to come when I want them to has been the best thing I ever did. Getting them back in the cage after free roam time is now a breeze and the other day one of my babies managed to escape the play pen while I was in the bathroom. I called her and she came right to me. Thank you!!

  • I have two big boys and they both knows some tricks (spin, come, jump into a circle, jump on something etc.), they are awesome rats (pet ?), the problem is they are really really impatient about food, it's really hard to train them at something that last more than 1 sec to execute, otherwise they just jump on me to get the treat , ignoring the trick anyway :D They are almost 2 years old so I just let down on hard tricks :) Always good to watch your videos, it's really fun when you call them when they are distracted :D (PS : what is the treat that looks like ''paper'' you give to your rats ? seems a good idea if it's low on carbs and calories. PS 2: If you want some idea, I did learn a trick to my rats : I gently blow air (really gently, they can still feel it even if don't move my lips) at them and they do the trick (spin), people usually don't understand how I did this, or start thinking if I actually can do telepathy with my rats :D

    • suck a nut it doesn't matter how old your rat lives too it's about how happy they are humans simply can't replace a rats company and that's why they need a partner if you look forward to getting rats in the future make sure you get 2 or more they are also pack animals that's why they need company the only reason a rat should be put alone is if it's abnormally aggressive

    @briannaespinoza7997@briannaespinoza79976 жыл бұрын
    • I just feed plain Cheerios broken into 2-4 pieces each most of the time. Gerber puffs make another good treat, again I break these into 2-4 pieces and feed each small piece as an individual reward. Both are available at just about any store as well, and each Gerber puff container lasts a week or so with all 4 girls training daily (I'll admit, I snack on the puffs as well - they taste really good!) Otherwise, just about anything you or I can eat works. My girls are super food driven, and will work for something as tasteless as wafer paper to something as amazing as a bit of banana (their favorite fruit). If your having trouble with certain tricks, meat baby food is great at giving some extra motivation. I sometimes use it when training the initial few tricks, as it motivates the rats like no other food and ensures that they stay by me while eating it (if they run off after every trick to stash/eat their food, they'll learn at a MUCH slower pace).
