In Part 3 of my Van Build Series I build all of the cabinets (mostly), and cut the panels for the ceiling and walls. I made a lot of visual progress but let’s be real, I still have heaps left to do. I really hope I finish this before summer is over…

@@FurtherFabrication I thought the same when the hammer and nail made appearances. I'm in the trades and haven't used a hammer to drive a nail in years. Brads and pins, yes. But always from pneumatic or battery-powered nailers. Even then, the brads or pins are only for securing things temporarily while glue sets. Screws are my go-to fasteners. For my van builds, I use extrusions, and secure assemblies in place with rivnuts and machine screws. I also employ either t-nuts or threaded inserts when joining wood pieces; the rationale being that things may need to be disassembled and reassembled at some point, and sheet metal and wood screws are only meant for bringing things together. I say that a van experiences a hurricane on the outside and earthquake on the inside as it goes down the road. Build accordingly. My now former partners completed a build a few months ago. Against my explicit instructions not to, they used wood screws in some places and "self-tappers" in others. After only six weeks out on the road, panels that were affixed with wood screws had fallen off, and elements that were secured to the van body with sheet metal screws had detached. Needless to say, there wasn't a single issue with any rivnut or machine screw.

Dude this is coming along so well! Love the unique approach for the ceiling panels. Such tidy work! Some pretty genius ideas with the baking paper and magnets to trace out the panels, and those rivet nuts seem to work great. I need to get one of those cordless nailers haha.

The WOOD IS RIMU. Im pretty sure. There is 2 kinds heart rimu which is wild grains and and dark and light. That is the outer rimu which is what you have. Strong long grain. Many New Zealand houses of old are totally built out of it. The older it gets it seems to get harder. Strong Good to see you using safety equipment, Rimu dust is toxic, so i use a positive flow fan to blow dust away from work. Your inspirational.😀

Very good job with the van and also a really well-made video. I can't stand the majority of YT production now, the current trend with 4k slow motion dramatic scenes and annoying music in the background + screaming people excited with the most trivial stuff, honestly your production was a pleasure to watch as I have learned a lot and I really admire how smartly your work is done. My carpentry skills are close to zero, so I truly appreciate how you explain your concepts and how you execute your ideas. Great job!
Love it! Been binge watching van tours and builds for a good while now, and I haven't seen this much "new thinking" in one build! Lots of inspiration for my "things I'm gonna steal for my own build that probably won't ever happen"-notes!

I love your videos and this one in particular. I like the voice-over instead of filming yourself talking, like a lot of people do. Somehow, it is easier to follow. I love the humor and I like the way you show your process, mistakes and all. I am several projects away from cabinets, but I am saving this video for when I get there.

if the wood for your counter top stunk to high heaven when working it, then it's Rimu. Turned a large platter out of it once and had to stop every 30 minutes for fresh air. havn't worked with Matai yet.

Hey mate, I'm pretty sure you did in one episode what I did in 8 months... what I don't get: why screw anything into the wall?! It breaks the paint seal and creates potential rust points doesn't it? My trick to get the riv nut points correct is: double side tape some foam on. Insert bolts. Press against where it's going. Good work, looks great!

You’re a excellent carpenter. I like how you try different ideas for clever solutions. Use painters tape to stop the glue drip all over your work space.

Fantastic! Layout is different than what i am looking at but some similar ideas. New ones i will use, split cutting board, and dividing bed slats into sections. I was going to do just one. I still havent figured out my table yet. I have a low roof, probably another 6 months. Your electrical is so clean. I will have to go look at your vid on that if you have one. Love the angled panel it is laid out, i might use that. 3 sources planned, except maybe a 4th - in addition to roof solar, also briefcase solar. off, A, B or A+B? we'll see if i can swing that. my plan is to build it out over 1-2 years, give me something to do. Was going to do roof last, and my wall cabinets are going to be usable prototypes out of cardboard, and all the cabinets scrap wood, and i will play with the sizing and layout - build it cheap and unfinished and there is no problem cutting it down and moving it. That's the plan. Great stuff. I love your filming technique - the plumbing example (I know nothing about plumbing). Although the vids are over 20 min they are efficient. Great voice overs, zero sound problems, which is the worst. Really good lighting. I am still unsure if i want undercabinet lighting to be lensed or indirect deflection. I should be able to prototype it. Great job!

looks great! love the ceiling and the native timber deets, that desk is fire. Looks like Heart Rimu, that should explain the thicker grain to normal rimu you find. Matai will tend to have a bit more "yellow" in it.
cheers bro! ah yeah Heart Rimu makes sense, that piece was crazy heavy. I actually don't think I've ever come across a piece of Matai, but I'd just heard it was similar to Rimu haha

You are a fantastic engineer, and seeing how you dealt with the curvaciousness of the interior would have stumped me, but I learned how you analyzed it and came to solutions. Superb craftsmanship, and the ceiling triangle looked great. I wonder how much weight addition you are up to now? Looks pretty well budgeted considering the utility and beauty. Really awesome stuff. Very inspiring. Did I spot some sort of special crosslap joint at an intersection of three beams in the desk frame? Is there a name for that, or was that something you made up on the fly? I can't get my head around how they'd fit together exactly if theres beams coming in from the x, y, and z axis...
Wait hold up. I'm struggling to see where the laser cutter is going to fit... Also I love that you started saying, "I'm going to subtract a hole" instead of "adding". I'll do the same

What's the type of hand saw you use for leveling off the long lengths and getting them flush? I like it. Might try your style with the glue and clamps too instead of the kreg jig.

Thanks for a great video. I’m just wondering about the rear of the cabinets. Did they follow the curve of the van that the battens followed? (For the lower base cabinets, coz I saw you used a template for the uppers) Or what?

Have you had any problems with warping on that cabinet design? I'm considering something similar and I like the simplicity of making it all out of plywood, but I worry about warping. Especially on the front panels that don't have as much support all around.

not much insulation I noticed, would be an issue during hot and cold weather? overall you did it great except for insulation.

What is the durability of using plywood. I mean the van are going to be.moving going over jumps and bump. What sort of affect is that going to have on the structure of the this material. This question is not just about you it's something I wanted to know and everybody is using plywood to make the internal furniture.
